Becoming a Vet

September 4th, 2008 - 1:12pm by Ryan Torain

So…I’m excited the regular season is here. I mean I wish I could be in it, of course, but I’ve just got to check it out from the sidelines for now. I do a lot of watching, just seeing how people carry themselves during the season.

When I get back out there, I want to be a vet. I don’t want to be a rookie. That’s the goal. I want to be used to it and have gone through it already, so that’s what I’m doing now. I go to all the games, all the away games, and I’m just staying around the team and seeing what they do and how everything goes — how it’s all working out.

This week we’ve got the Raiders. I’m excited to go into that atmosphere. I’ve never been to Oakland, so that’s going to be an experience. It’s the NFL, man. I still get culture shock and sort of nerves when I’m on the field watching everyone warm up. It’s like, “Man…I can’t wait to do it.”

One of the cool things about being on the sideline is I get to see some things I might not see if I was on the field. I’ll see guys getting frustrated for whatever reasons — a bad play or not getting however much playing time — I see that just throughout the team. I hurt myself last year as well, so it’s not really that new to me. From that, I feel like I have a good mindset and I’m being very patient, so as soon as I get back on the field it’ll be like camp all over again, just trying to have fun and play ball.

My schedule these days has been just coming into Dove Valley, going to meetings and getting my rehab in. I take off the brace every hour of the day, just trying to keep my arm flexible so it doesn’t get stiff. Right now I’m just working on some movement in my elbow joint, my wrist joint, and just doing a couple sets of those pretty much all throughout the day. A little bit of soft tissue as well.

It’s coming along really well, actually. The rehab is definitely easier than I thought it would be, and I’m happy with the progress.

That’s really it for me right now. I’m just trying to keep all of you involved and up to date. There ain’t much going on until I get back out on the field, but that’ll be here faster than I know. I’ve just got to stay focused and keep working, and I’ll keep you all in the loop the whole time.

There weren’t that many questions asked last week. Come on, guys! What do you all want to know? There was one question though, about what running back has the same style as me. I’d say maybe Larry Johnson. Like him I’m kind of a bigger guy with longer strides, an athlete that makes guys miss. So I’d say my style is a little bit like him.

As always, I’ll keep working hard and you all keep talking about me, so fans will know my name when I’m back out there on the field doing big things.

Ryan: Good luck this season man. I was pumped to see you doing so well in Training Camp and then the injury… Man that was a bummer. I still picked you up for my fantasy team cause I know you have a nose for the goal line. God Bless you this season, you are going to do great things!

Is it possible you could be back by week three or four? I heard something like that, I believe I heard that on the radio. I’m excited see you play. I can’t remember if you played against my Buffs last year or not but I’ve seen some stuff on youtube.

  3. Legendary30 says:

I know that you are aiming at the Jacksonville game for your first game, But when are you aiming at returning to practice?? A week before?? 2 weeks??

can’t wait to see you out there!!

  4. Tlynch says:

  5. Anikai says:

Ryan, I watched you in college, and was so stoked we drafted you… you are going to be the next TD….can’t wait to see you back in action…here’s to a speedy recovery!!!

  6. remotefan says:

Are you able to do any strength exercise with the injured arm or do you have to wait? Will it be strong enough to play / hold on to the ball right away?

  7. SaloRB says:

Hi Ryan, I have a question for you… how do you feel about the fact that Shanahan compared you to Terrell Davis?

  8. Kaylore says:

Thanks for the update, Ryan. Here’s some questions since you asked.

    1. What is Coach Turner and Shanahan like? How are their styles different from Dennis Erickson and his staff?

    2. How does a pro running back practice their protection assignments?

    3. What do you think of Denver so far?

and finally, this is a big one,

    4. Are you a boxers or briefs man, Ryan?

    Thanks
    -Kaylore

  9. broncoryan says:

    Hey R/T,

I am sure you are itching to see the field in pads. I cant wait to see you tear it up out there. I guess my only questions are: Since you cannot get right into the thick of things for week 1 - Do you have a yardage goal for the season? A TD goal? Have you been told how many carries you may get once you hit the field? What was the very first feeling you felt when you were drafted. Excitement? Fear? A little anxious? Cya on the field!

  10. maddenking27 says:

hey ryan whats up ? i got two questions for you 1) when you were out at practice who was the one person on defence you did not look forward to running into 2) we all know the friendship between b-marsh and cutler do you have the same kind of friendship with anyone on the team? take your time getting better man we all want to see you out there

  11. Cisco24 says:

Hey Ryan! Well I guess this isn’t how you expected to start your NFL career unfortunately but I’m very happy to see you are in good spirits and are working hard to get back out there ASAP!

I watched a thing on T.D. on the NFL network quite a while ago now but what they said about him is “He was not the best at any category that they listed (speed, strength, etc.) but he was great in all of those categories.

Now my question to you is what do you feel you bring to the Denver organization to win the starting job and help us win the Superbowl??? My second question is Who is your favorite former Bronco besides John Elway? And third, what player currently in the NFL would you like to punch in the face? lol. Philip Rivers is who I’d pick!!!! HaHaHa!

Honestly good luck to you Ryan and just know that I am not hoping for the next Terrel Davis. I hope I get to see the First Ryan Torain!! You’ll be great!!!

  12. Cisco24 says:

Oh! and please tell me Kaylore is a girl lol. I’ve never heard the name before and I think it is weird for a dude to ask boxers or briefs to a guy!

  13. cornersfan says:

    Hey Ryan!!
    Um…..some questions for you…let’s see
How did you decide or what convinced you to do the blog?
and I just spaced on the other one. Dangit!
Oh well. I hope you answer mine ;) I hope you’re as good a cheerleader this week in Oakland as you are a running back. Happy first NFL game!!

  14. cornersfan says:

ps…..if you read the Rocky Mtn News…check out Say What? on Monday morning. I’m involved with that. :)

  15. baileythebronco says:

hey you werent on my new madden so i made you and your the starter now tearing it up. Accourding to the game if you were not injured we’d beat the raiders 35 to 3. Thats juat good stuff there get healthy buddy

  16. HOGblog says:

    Hey R/T

We’re loving you coming to us in real time, doing this blog bro! I got a question for ya…

It’s reported that (Quick Six)has suffered the same injury that you did last year, the (Lisfranc)injury. I’ve seen that injury be career threatening? How well have you’ve come back from it, and what would you tell “Quick Six”, if you havent talk to him already???

Thanks T-Train! So glad you’re with the Broncos dude!

  17. champrox24 says:

i have a question…do u miss domonique foxworth? i do! but ur cool! ummmm another question…why did u pick the number u picked?? haha some good questions huh?!? anyways…GO BRONCOS!!!! ♥

  18. BradJamesBroncoFan says:

Do you think you have a similar game to Brandon Jacobs? If so, I can hardly wait to watch you on the field for the Broncos. Jacobs was awesome against the Redskins Thursday night.

  19. suzukilc says:

When will you be able to start conditioning to better prepare yourself for when you do return? Would be nice to have you back in mid-season as by that time, our young backs probably could use some relief to get throught the long season, especially if you guys do make it into the playoffs.

  20. Wolverine83 says:

    Hey Ryan,
What are some of your interests outside of football? What is one of your favorite books? What about favorite tv shows, past and present? Favorite movie? What do you want to do after football?

  21. Bowie Man says:

    Hey Ryan,
Are you going to have a special TD celebration when you get back on the field? Something like the Mile High Salute?

  22. fooballa says:

I’m a Colorado girl that just happened to go to a lot of ASU games…it’ll be good to see ya on a field in Colorado finally. How you like it up here so far? I’m sure teammates can tell you all the hot spots (even though it’s NOTHING like Scottsdale) but if you need some recommendations…..restaurants, clubs, etc……I’m sure we could all help out :)
You asked for people to ask questions….now you won’t be able to answer them all LOL

  23. Bronco*n*kansas says:

Ryan, How much has the other veterans that are in other positions helped you in adjusting to the Professional game? I got the privilage of watching Rod Smith in college at Joplin and then his ascent to the top of the receiver ranks. But it was in big part to his extra hard work. I am hoping he is still helping the younger players like yourself get into a working plan that will help you excell.

I am looking so forward to filling my one empty spot on my fantasy team with your name. I really look forward to seeing you run through the gaping holes that are being planned for you and the other running backs.

    Kevin

  24. b4life says:

Hey Ryan, im glad to hear your healing up well and that Shanahan didnt put you on IR it really shows how much this team needs you. I wanted to ask you when you where going up who was your favorate player and who was your favorate runningback. I know mine is Barry Sanders, the way he just made pro players look like high school players was amazing, the guy was just the best running back talent wise and his work ethic its a shame he retired early. I also wanna know in what time can you run the 40. Hope you get back on the field soon, and we get to see those bruising runs.

    All ready

  25. atwaters da man says:

    What’s Ryan!

Curtis Martin used to run the famous steps in Santa Monica, Ca. to get his edge every off season. Do you have a special hill you run to get your edge? With a upper body injury can you work your legs? If you can this could really be a blessing and you could have legs that look like Jones Drew once you hit the field!

I have a equipment question as well. When I played CB my idol has always been Steve Atwater. I believe one of the reasons he was so physical was that he used his forearms as baseball bats. The reason he was able to do that is from the very special elbow pads that I have only seen him wear. Since you now have some deeper pockets have you thought about making some custom equipment? I didn’t have deep pockets when I played so I used shin guards for soccer players and used them on my forearms. It takes some tape but it is so worth it!! I hope during your time now you try to create some custom gear so you can really knock some helmets off this season : ) Thanks for your time!

  26. nickmeyer says:

I have heard people say you are injury prone, is that so?

  27. Tmoney15 says:

Whassup RT, I’m glad your rehab is going well that is very good news. Besides the rehab process in the training room, do you spend anytime working on your lower body strength and conditioning? Do you work on speed and explosive drills since you cannot train your upper body or are you simply limited to rehab and physical therapy on your injured elbow? Can’t wait till your back on the field we need you to punish opposing defenses!

  28. thepev says:

What up Ryan? This is my question: Who wins? ASU or Georgia?

  29. Bronco*n*kansas says:

Hey Ryan, I was in Kansas City today and ate at Mongolian BBQ. I ran into a couple guys that say they knew you and played High school football with you at SM. They told me you could really tear it up big time. I got really psyched talking with them about you and the rest of the Broncos. Was wondering what was the team you feared or desired to play the most in KC. I guess more like who was your rivalry?

    Hey Ryan,
A lot of pressure being called the next Terrell Davis, how you feel about that? I know your your own back, but weve been waiting for the next TD forever. Good luck man!!

    Ryan,
If you score a touchdown this year and I think you will. Can you bring back the Mile High Salute!??!?! Terrell Davis used to do it and it led to Super Bowls. Study about Chi Energy, and I’m telling you that it generates an energy that leads to Super Bowls. PLEASE I MEAN PLEASE HELP BRING BACK THE MILE HIGH SALUTE!!! I bought tickets to the last game of the season in San Diego and I hope that we are saluting our AFC West championship.

  33. leandro15x92 says:

    Three things

    1. nickmeyer, he isnt an injury prone he just has injuries. are champ or marshall or cutler injury prones? NO, they are human, it happens.

    2. Good luck with the injury Ryan. Hopefully its gets good so u can run people over ASAP.

    3. I dislike phlip rivers.

  34. atwaters da man says:

    1) I know this kind of puts you on the spot but who is the best blocking WR on our roster after Marshall?

    2) How is Josh Barrett doing? He slipped down the draft boards because of work ethic concerns. Does he spend extra time after practice working on his craft? Is this a unfair judgment on him? He has the body, speed talent it seems to be the next Safety to get the torched passed to him I just don’t see the fire in his eyes..do you? Since the Safety position is a corner in coverage and a LB in the box wouldn’t it be smart to work with Champ on say Tuesdays and Thursdays just on Coverage and work with DJ Wednesday and Friday on Tackling even if it is for just a half hour? Can you please pass the question to him?

    3) Next question is similar but a different position. I find it absolutely mind blowing that punters don’t spend time practicing tackling and getting off blocks. I wrote a post on the Punter completion and said that I though Kern could get the job because he wasn’t scared to stick his nose in there and help make a tackle. With the most kickoff returns for touchdowns last season I would think that this is very important to have all 11 guys ready to make the tackle. After I wrote that post Sam P made a great Tackle on Pac Man and I heard he asked Capp for help with technique 10 minutes before the play. It was a great tackle especially for a punter and honestly is also was the first time I wrote a post and felt it was read by a player used which was awesome! Please pass this on to Kern if you would be so kind.

    4) My last question is strictly for the Torain Tank. You are your own runner so the compression to T.D. show a extreme level of respect you have earned and deserve from your hard work everyone talks about. I hate to quote Oprah but my girl loves her show and I like the quote. She always says “God can dream a bigger dream then you could dream for your self.” The reason why I say this is because T.D. was a amazing runner but you could be even better than the great T.D. I think part of the reason he was so successful was from these attributes. 1) He was a slasher with enough speed to get to the outside. I think what is the huge difference with the Broncos run game since TD and Alex Gibbs left is that the early runs where toss’s and stretch plays where the RB took it all the way outside and get positive yardage even if it was only 3,4,5 yards. This is what sets up the cut back. Once you go outside and win then the Linebackers over commit and there is a huge hole for the cut back. I’m sure the broncos would set you up with the DVDs so you can watch 1996, 1997, 1998 which was the years that put zone blocking and the cut back on the map and compare it to 2006, 2007. The runners go for the cut back first and don’t set up the Linebackers. I hope this is the second post that a player reads and looks into it. Thank you for your time! I think you could be the next Running back to achieve the dream that god dreamed for you.

  35. Damon420_NJ says:

I agree…bring back the salute. Your Mile High Soldiers …. salute !!

  36. 77crush says:

i agree too. bring back the salute. looking forward to seeing you reach the end zone often.

get well soon. bronco fans everywhere are pulling for you.

  37. baileythebronco says:

hey ryan im adam ive seen all your highlights available and i have a lot of faith in you i was wondering if you have any opinions on how highly you are thought of not only by the fans but by the coaches as well to make the roster with an injury and all? i believe you are the running back this team needs in a stacked running back division like the afc west. if you look at all the other backs in the division they are big solid runners and thats what you are so go be a star. goodluck to you my friend

  38. 15thebeast says:

Just going to say hope you come back with no problems and when you play Oakland hopfully this year prove to the whole nfl that you are a better back then Mcfadden by running over everyone in your way we all know you can do it.

  39. 15thebeast says:

I have been watching films from your college days as well as your combine and pro day and i will admit for a big back you have great footwork, hands and moves but i noticed you lack that speed to hit holes as fast you you would probley like so as the running backs coach and the conditionaire been working on your speed or do you think it will improve as you hit nfl fittness standards

  40. Williams717 says:

Hey Ryan, welcome to Denver…. cant wait to see you play! Just wanted to add another vote to bring back the MH Salute. The fans would love it! Denver Bronco heritage right there that never should have gone away.

  41. 2champ4pickSIX says:

I enjoyed how you and I were probably the biggest fans pushing for his return babe! But it seems as if some other people were ready to jump on with us, they just were with the other Ryan. Maybe we SHOULD”Consider Clady” I believe it was Jim that said that first! Am I right?
