Wednesday Practice Report

July 29th, 2009 - 1:05pm by Chris GentilvisoOther posts by

Wednesday’s practice came to a close with the Broncos completing an hour-long session chock full of different drills and installments.

Brandon Marshall, Lucas Taylor and D.J. Williams missed the morning session. Head Coach Josh McDaniels said it was due to residual soreness.

Here are some quick hits from Wednesday:

  • Brandon Stokley was at camp early for a second day in a row. His son, sporting a Carmelo Anthony Nuggets jersey Tuesday, wore an Eddie Royal jersey on Wednesday. Chad Jackson and Lonie Paxton were a few of the players spotted walking around Dove Valley today.
  • Linebackers coach Don Martindale had Wesley Woodyard and Lee Robinson working on goal-line stands, with each rotating between the tight end and linebacker position.

Tuesday brought a lot less rain but a few more players to practice at Dove Valley.

D.J. Williams and Wesley Woodyard joined the festivities — two more veterans recovering from injuries — after missing yesterday’s session with flu-like symptoms.

Brandon Marshall and Lucas Taylor missed the morning session, which Head Coach Josh McDaniels said was a coaching decision due to soreness.

    Following the Blueprint

As an undrafted rookie, Lee Robinson realizes he needs to work harder than most to standout among his peers.

The Alcorn State product also understands that – despite being passed over in April’s 2009 NFL Draft — he has a fair opportunity to make the Broncos roster this season. Each year, undrafted college free agents latch on to rosters across the NFL and become success stories … In fact, exhibit A sits directly across from Robinson inside the Broncos’ locker room.

Last year at this time, Wesley Woodyard was walking around Dove Valley as an undrafted free agent, hoping to prove himself as a commodity for the Broncos after a stellar career at the University of Kentucky. Under the radar, the linebacker confidently stuck to his game through minicamps, organized team activities and training camp.

The rest, as they say, is history.

A QB Battle and Christmas Wishes

    CUTLER VS. RIVERS

It is fairly safe to assume that Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler and Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers aren’t sending one another Christmas cards this holiday season. And for many players around the Broncos locker room, that rivalry adds another level of intensity to this weekend’s AFC West title tilt in San Diego.

“We have Jay’s back,” Daniel Graham said. “He is our captain and when he is at war, we all support him. We are going to war with him. It is going to be a good one on Sunday.”

With so much drama surrounding one contest, and the rivalry between the two up-and-coming superstar quarterbacks only adding to it, Ebenezer Ekuban said if he wasn’t on the field, he would pay good money to see this showdown.

“You have two phenomenal quarterbacks who are still young, we still haven’t seen what they are capable of,” Ekuban said. “Those are two young dynamic quarterbacks back there who have control of their teams. It is going to be an interesting game. It is going to be fun.”

    Youth Always Gives Hope

The Denver Broncos of 2008 have been hit by injuries like few teams in recent memory.

It has been unusual, to say the least, to watch the number of players on the Broncos’ injured reserve list reach double figures.

But you have a schedule, and you have to keep playing, and every time a player goes down it gives an opportunity to another, and in this case, a younger player.

Denver’s young player’s contributions have been tremendous this year, and couple those efforts with the team’s first place standing in the AFC Western Division and you get bright promise for future seasons.
