Notebook: Outlook for Sunday

October 28th, 2011 - 2:55pm by Kenny LeganOther posts by

The Broncos came out to practice Friday with some lingering snow still piled up along the outer edges of the field. But that didn’t get in their way as they ran through a full practice preparing for the Detroit Lions.

Most of the team was out in full force, but there were a few players who Head Coach John Fox listed on the last injury report before gameday.

Running back Willis McGahee did not participate and Fox ruled him out of Sunday’s contest with a hand injury. Defensive end Elvis Dumervil (ankle) and defensive tackle Marcus Thomas (knee) were limited and listed as questionable for Sunday while safety Brian Dawkins (illness) was also limited but probable. Tight end Julius Thomas participated in full and is also listed as probable.

Coach Fox addressed Dumervil’s injury, saying he will be re-evaluated in the coming days leading up to the game.

“He’s been a Pro Bowl player,” Fox said. “He’s got those types of abilities. We are obviously better with him than without him. He’ll be day-to-day and a game-time decision. We’ll see how it goes.”

Numbers Game

September 9th, 2011 - 3:32pm by Max HensonOther posts by

To some, a jersey number is irrelevant.

To others — like defensive lineman Jason Hunter, who today switched from No. 52 to No. 90 — it can bring on special powers.

“I feel solid in 90. I’m excited about that,” Hunter said of the number switch. “I feel some juices — I feel the power running through me. So be looking for some big things from 90.”

Hunter said the desire for a more traditional D-line number prompted the switch but one of his teammates was quick to snatch up the now-vacant No. 52.

Qualifying Offers Extended

March 2nd, 2011 - 3:50pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway announced on Twitter that the team has extended qualifying offers today to the following restricted free agents: Ryan Harris, Matt Prater, Marcus Thomas, Kevin Vickerson and Wesley Woodyard.

No specifics have been revealed.

The announcement means the team retains the right to match any offer extended to the restricted free agents by another club. Teams may not begin negotiating with the restricted free agents until the start of the new league year, the date of which will depend on the signing of a new collective bargaining agreement.

Next Guy Up

October 11th, 2010 - 4:43pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

With the news that five defensive players — including three starters — will sit out Sunday’s home matchup with the New York Jets, the Broncos locker room shared a simple philosophy.

“The next guy up has got to perform,” said David Bruton, who said he’ll be ready to take advantage of his opportunity if he’s asked to step in at safety with Brian Dawkins and Darcel McBath out.

Bruton started a Week 15 matchup against Oakland last season when Renaldo Hill sat out with an injury, registering five tackles and a pass breakup. He said that experience has made him more confident while approaching a similar circumstance this week.

Five Defenders Out

October 11th, 2010 - 12:21pm by Eric DetweilerOther posts by

Robert Ayers, Brian Dawkins, Andre’ Goodman, Darcel McBath and Wesley Woodyard will miss Sunday’s home game against the Jets due to injury, Head Coach Josh McDaniels announced Monday.

The head coach did not rule out Demaryius Thomas, who left Sunday’s loss at Baltimore with a head and neck injury after a second-quarter kickoff return.

McDaniels did not discuss the nature of the injuries or how long the players might be out. McBath left Sunday’s game in the first quarter with an ankle injury and did not return, while Dawkins went down with a knee injury in the fourth quarter and didn’t return, according to press box injury updates.

Leading the Way

September 8th, 2010 - 11:52am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

Seven Broncos will help lead the team into 2010.

After a vote by their peers, Chris Kuper, Kyle Orton and Daniel Graham have been named offensive captains, Champ Bailey, Brian Dawkins and D.J. Williams have been named defensive captains and Wesley Woodyard was voted special teams captain for the season.

It’s an honor Dawkins takes very seriously, and one that he said comes with plenty of responsibilities.

“Being able to answer tough questions when questions are asked, being able to stand up after tough losses and talk about things and being able to make the right decisions in tough, tough times,” the safety said. “(They are) not always the most popular decisions sometimes a leader has to make — you just have to be able to follow your heart and make the right decisions.”

Leading the Way

Woodyard

Wesley Woodyard’s two NFL seasons have proven that a player doesn’t need hype or expectation — or even to be drafted — to earn teammates’ respect.

The former college free agent’s election as one of the Broncos’ seven captains last season was proof enough of that.

But in the NFL, leadership can take time. As Woodyard transitions from young player working hard to find a niche to veteran on an experienced defensive unit, he’s learning what it takes to be a leader at football’s highest level.

One lesson Woodyard, who has made his mark as one of the Broncos’ best special teams players, picked up along the way is that someone is always watching and listening, whether it’s on the practice field or in the locker room.

Final Week of Passing Camp

June 7th, 2010 - 11:40am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

The Broncos took the field on Monday for the final week of passing camp. Monday’s practice — like Friday — was an “opportunity practice” for rookies and younger players to get some on-field work as the veterans worked out separately.

One new sighting was third-round pick Eric Decker, who was running back and forth catching passes from strength and conditioning coach Rich Tuten away from the rest of practice.

Demaryius Thomas, Ryan Harris and J.J. Arrington — all of whom returned to practice last week — were involved in the team portions of practice for the first time.

March Madness at Dove Valley

March 18th, 2010 - 5:13pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

The NCAA men’s basketball tournament began today, and it’s safe to say there’s plenty of attention on televisions throughout the facility.

In fact, when Brady Quinn walked up to the podium to begin his press conference, he noticed that his alma mater, Notre Dame, was in a tight game with less than two minutes remaining.

So he proceeded to step off the podium and watch the remainder of the game, bantering back and forth with some of the media. Unfortunately, Notre Dame lost by a point, and the quarterback headed back up to the podium for his press session.

But that wasn’t the last sign of March madness at Dove Valley. When Wesley Woodyard stepped up to begin his press conference, he announced that he had his alma mater, Kentucky, going all the way to win the championship this year.

He also managed to tease a reporter about the University of North Carolina, who, as he said, “barely won” its first game in the NIT.

As a proud Tar Heel, let me first say that they’ll be much better next year. Also, an NIT championship banner wouldn’t look too tacky next to those five NCAA championship banners in the Dean Dome.

Hope everyone’s bracket remains unbusted this weekend.

Woodyard Showing Support

December 18th, 2009 - 2:03pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

Wesley Woodyard’s brother is currently working in Iraq alongside the U.S. Military, so it comes as no surprise that Woodyard would have an affinity for the troops.

Inspired by his brother, the inside linebacker decided to donate 10 tickets to Sunday’s game against the Oakland Raiders to military men and women who have recently come back from overseas.

“Sitting around talking to Andra Davis, he also expressed that it would probably be a good idea for me to reach out to the troops, just to show the support and the love that we as Broncos have for them,” Woodyard said.

He worked with the ticket office to help find soldiers who were back from abroad, and provided tickets to get them out to INVESCO Field at Mile High this weekend.

“It’s pretty good to get them to come to the game,” Woodyard smiled. “I know they’re going to be loud.”
