No Time To Panic

October 10th, 2012 - 8:09am by mike_riceOther posts by

Sunday against the Patriots, the Broncos let another opportunity to beat an elite team slip away. At various times against the Falcons, Texans and Patriots—three of the best teams in the NFL—the Broncos played very well. But in the end, the Broncos lost those games.

Let me be completely clear on several points:
1) The Broncos are 2-3 and that is not a good record. They have played three teams that will, in all likelihood, be in the hunt for a Super Bowl title. They have lost each of those games.
2) The Broncos are not playing like an elite team right now.
3) The Broncos have plenty of areas in which to improve. That improvement must start next Monday night against the Chargers.

At the same time, the season is not nearly over. It is just getting started. There is so much football left to be played.

I’ve talked about it before but it is worth another mention: One has to keep perspective. It is entirely too early to make any snap decisions about how the season will unfold. It is entirely too early to assume that the Broncos will not get better. It is entirely too early to believe the Broncos are destined for something akin to mediocrity.

Clearly, the Broncos have to reduce the turnovers. They have to tighten down on defense. They have work to do.

But only five games into the season, the work the Broncos have to do cannot and should not completely negate the positive things they have done. Five games into the season, the work the Broncos have to do should not define who they are.

While they fell behind early to the Falcons, Texans and Patriots, they battled back into each of those games. They played well at times. I know, playing well at times doesn’t cut it in the NFL. But this early in the season, it is worth something.

On offense, the biggest problem has been turnovers. The Broncos are minus-6 in turnover margin and they have lost seven fumbles, the third highest total in the NFL. The primary work the Broncos have to do on offense is clean up the turnovers. I am fully confident they can and will do just that. And when they do, they will have one really, really good offense. Even with the turnovers, the Broncos are averaging 28 points per game.

Defensively, the Broncos must find a way to more consistently stop the run and get off the field on third down. A few more takeaways would help, too.

But let’s cut these a guys a little slack, too. They have played five games under yet another new defensive coordinator. They have faced three extremely talented offenses.

I have no idea what the Broncos’ final record will be this year. I know that the early portion of the schedule looked daunting and has, indeed, proven to be just that. I know they have yet to establish a pattern of consistently good play.

I also know with a win over the Chargers, the Broncos will go into the bye week 3-3 and tied for first place in the AFC West.

I, for one, refuse to pack in the season over some patches of rough play against some of the best teams in the NFL. If I’m making these same points six weeks from now, I’ll be concerned. But it is still only early October and the Broncos still have time to have a quality season.

Don’t count them out just yet.

How concerned are you over the Broncos’ 2-3 start? Are you optimistic they can make necessary improvements?

Thanks for reading and sharing your thoughts.

Sincerely,
Mike

Elway Looks for Broncos to Bounce Back

October 9th, 2012 - 6:02pm by Sam DavisOther posts by

In the fifth episode of Elway Access on Tuesday afternoon, Broncos TV’s Chris Hall talked with Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway.

During the 30-minute podcast, Elway spoke on the team’s Week 5 loss at New England as well as the importance of the upcoming divisional showdown with the San Diego Chargers.

First, the Super Bowl winning quarterback talked about a former teammate of his, safety Steve Atwater. It was announced Tuesday that Atwater has been selected into the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame.

“This is an honor well deserved,” Elway said. “I think if you look at what Steve Atwater did for football, what he did for Colorado and the Broncos, he was really one of the first big, big safeties that came into the league and really revolutionized that position. He really was a force back there.”

But Elway believes Tuesday should be one of several post-career accolades that his former teammate garners.

Miller Stuffs Stat Sheet at New England

October 9th, 2012 - 10:27am by Tyler EverettOther posts by

Rushing the passer has never been a problem for linebacker Von Miller.

Coming off an 11.5 sack, Pro Bowl campaign as a rookie, Miller has quickly added five more sacks through the first five games of 2012. But throughout the offseason and the early going this season, Miller has talked about wanting to become a more complete player.

Sunday against New England, Miller’s second two-sack performance of the season was just one aspect of his eye-popping stat line. The 2011 Defensive Rookie of the Year finished the game with eight tackles (seven solo), including five behind the line of scrimmage, and added two quarterback hits, a pass defensed and a forced fumble.

“I think he answered the bell,” Head Coach John Fox said. “We knew it was going to be tough duty, trotting in there against a good football team at home. I thought he performed pretty well. He was one of our better performers on defense.”

Miller is now the NFL’s leader with 12 tackles for loss through five weeks, evidence that he has become equally dangerous against both the run and the pass. But after the game, he wasn’t interested in reveling in his big afternoon. His only concern was the game’s final score.

“I mean, 31-21? We didn’t do it enough,” Miller said. “We’ll get back in the lab tomorrow and keep on working. I’m confident that we can become the team that we know we can be.”

Broncos at Patriots: Key Plays

October 8th, 2012 - 1:10am by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

Third-and-5 from the Denver 47: Hoping to sustain the Broncos’ opening drive, quarterback Peyton Manning targeted wide receiver Demaryius Thomas deep downfield. The third-year receiver made the catch and took the ball all the way to the New England 18-yard line, but was stripped from behind. The Patriots recovered the fumble, ending the Broncos chances of taking the lead right out of the gates.

Third-and-5 from the Denver 47: Facing the same down and distance from the same line of scrimmage as its opening possession, the Broncos offense looked to extend its second drive of the game. This time, Manning was sacked, forcing Denver to punt the ball over to New England. This time, the Patriots capitalized and marched down the field for their first score of the game.

Third-and-1 from the New England 25: Needing just one yard for the first down, Manning handed to running back Willis McGahee. The veteran charged through the line and extended the ball forward as he was being tackled near the first-down mark. The play was ruled a first down on the field, but the Patriots challenged the spot. After a replay, the call stood and four snaps later, Manning found tight end Joel Dreessen for a 1-yard touchdown to tie the score at 7.

Third-and-10 from the New England 20: After the equalizing touchdown, the Broncos defense had the Patriots in a third-and-long situation. Instead of a three-and-out, quarterback Tom Brady hit wide receiver Wes Welker for a 14-yard gain to give the drive life. The Patriots wound up scoring on a 1-yard run by Shane Vereen to take a lead that they never relinquished.

Broncos at Patriots: Quotables

October 7th, 2012 - 9:19pm by Tyler EverettOther posts by

HEAD COACH JOHN FOX

On Patriots QB Tom Brady’s no-huddle offense
“He’s extremely smart. I think he knows football. I think our guy did an outstanding job today as well. He’s a great player. He’s been doing it for quite some time at a high level. He’s definitely a hard-core player to defend against.”

On all three losses having a late-game rally
“We’re kind of feeling ourselves through both defensively and offensively. Three of those teams that beat us have been doing it together for some time and they’re obviously good football teams if you just look at the record. It’s just what it is. We’ve got to get better. That’s the challenge. There’s a lot of tough guys in that locker room. There’s no quit in them. They hung in there all 60 minutes and we just came up short again. We’ve got to get out of that.”

Denver Falls to New England 31-21

October 7th, 2012 - 5:31pm by Tyler EverettOther posts by

The Broncos mounted a rally after falling behind 31-7 in the third quarter, but were unable to cut the lead to less than 10 points, and fell to the New England Patriots by a final score of 31-21.

Denver fell despite a strong performance from quarterback Peyton Manning, who completed 31-of-44 passes for 345 yards and three touchdowns. But he and the Broncos were outdone by the Patriots’ ability to control the clock, as New England finished with a 10-minute advantage in time of possession.

Trailing by 10 points and driving inside the New England red zone, a fumble by running back Willis McGahee put the game out of reach, as the Patriots were able to run out the remaining 3:42 on the clock.

New England got on the board first when quarterback Tom Brady found wide receiver Wes Welker for an 8-yard touchdown pass. The Broncos responded with a 1-yard scoring strike from quarterback Peyton Manning to tight end Joel Dreessen.

The Patriots then scored the last 10 points of the first half and added 14 more in the third quarter to build a 31-7 lead.

Denver cut the lead to 31-21 on a pair of short touchdown completions by Manning, who hooked up with wide receiver Eric Decker from two yards out, then wide receiver Brandon Stokley from 5, to cut the lead to 10 points.

Manning Passes for 300

In the fourth quarter, quarterback Peyton Manning surpassed 300 yards in the air for the game. It is the 66th time he has topped the 300-yard mark, extending the NFL record that he holds in that category.

Today marks his third straight 300-yard passing game.

Manning also has three touchdowns in the game.

Denver Cuts Lead to 10

On a fourth-down play near midfield, defensive end Elvis Dumervil sacked Tom Brady and forced a fumble. After a 20-yard loss, the Broncos took over on the New England 43-yard line.

The Broncos converted on a third-down two plays later as Peyton Manning hit Eric Decker near the sideline.
Manning then found Willis McGahee for a 22-yard pickup, setting Denver up with a first-and-goal from the 5.

The next play was a 5-yard touchdown pass from Manning to wide receiver Brandon Stokley. It was Manning’s third touchdown pass of the day — marking his 66th career game with three passing touchdowns, and the second in a row.

Matt Prater’s extra point was successful, cutting the New England lead to 10 points by a score of 31-21.
