Broncos vs. Saints: Fourth Quarter Notes

September 21st, 2008 - 4:42pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by Gray Caldwell

15:00: It’s third-and-8 for the Saints on their own 36. Drew Brees drops back and finds an open receiver for a first down. There’s a flag on the play, but it’s offsides on the Broncos.

14:37: D.J. Williams puts a big hit on Reggie Bush after a three-yard gain on a pass from Brees, setting up second-and-7.

13:16: INVESCO Field at Mile High is a little less raucous as the Saints continue to pick up first downs into Broncos territory, but the Broncos still lead New Orleans by eight, they scored 34 points before the fourth quarter even began and the defense has scored a touchdown this afternoon. It’s been a pretty solid day so far — now if only Reggie Bush would stop picking up first downs.

13:16: Pierre Thomas takes a handoff and runs 10 yards in for the touchdown, diving for the pylon. The Saints elect to go for two to tie the game, but Brees’ pass falls incomplete. The Broncos lead by two over the Saints, 34-32.

Broncos vs. Saints: Third Quarter Notes

September 21st, 2008 - 3:55pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by Gray Caldwell

15:00: The Broncos are back to receive the ball, as New Orleans won the coin toss and received to start the game. It’s a 22-yard return for Peyton Hillis and the Broncos have a first-and-10 at the 30.

14:24: An incomplete pass and a two-yard run make it third-and-8 for the Broncos. Jay Cutler steps back and tries to find Brandon Marshall near the sideline but throws it low, and Marshall can’t quite dive for it. Brett Kern is out to punt it away. New Orleans tries a block formation and the Broncos do a good job of blocking for the 49-yard punt. Bush is back for the return and he finds some space near the sideline and brings it back to the New Orleans 36.

13:58: Drew Brees finds his fullback, Mike Karney, who is tackled by D.J. Williams after a one-yard gain. Williams amkes another big hit on second down, taking down receiver Lance Moore immediately after he caught the ball, bringing up a third-and-6 for the Saints.

12:39: Elvis Dumervil beat his man off the line and he and Jarvis Moss collapse in on Brees as he lets the ball go — over his receiver, being covered by Champ Bailey.

The resulting punt goes into the endzone after Eddie Royal lets it go over his head, and the Broncos will have a first-and-10 from the 20.

Broncos vs. Saints: Second Quarter Notes

September 21st, 2008 - 2:46pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by Gray Caldwell

15:00: Second-and-4 for the Saints on their own 30. Just heard on the radio broadcast that the 35-yard touchdown from Jay Cutler to Brandon Marshall was the Broncos’ eighth play of 20-or-more yards this season. Talk about being prone for the big play.

14:11: On third-and-1, the Saints hand off to Reggie Bush, who tries to take it to the right side. John Engelberger forces a fumble, and Nate Webster picks it up and starts running toward the end zone. He has blocking the whole way and he returns is 34 yards for the Broncos’ third touchdown of the day. Matt Prater’s extra point is good, and Denver leads New Orleans, 21-3.

14:11: Cutler is still congratulating Webster and the defense on the sideline as Prater prepares to kick off. It’s another touchback for Prater, and the Saints will begin from their own 20.

Watching the replay of the fumble return, Webster made some great moves breaking tackles and there was excellent blocking the whole way, but it all started with a big block from Champ Bailey to spring Webster loose.

Spencer Larsen is being helped off the field after the kickoff. The trainers are attending to him on the bench as some of his special teams teammates walk over to pat him on the shoulder and check on him.

Broncos vs. Saints: First Quarter Notes

September 21st, 2008 - 2:04pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by Gray Caldwell

15:00: Pierre Thomas and Usama Young are back to receive for the Saints. There’s definitely a lot of orange in the crowd — it’s a pretty cool environment here at INVESCO Field at Mile High.

15:00: Several Broncos get involved in a huge collision at the 14-yard line, First and 10 New Orleans.

John Engelberger, Dewayne Robertson, Marcus Thomas and Elvis Dumervil are the starters on the defensive line. Boss Bailey, Nate Webster and D.J. Williams are at the linebacker positions, and Champ Bailey, Dre’ Bly, Marquand Manuel and Marlon McCree round out the starters in the secondary.

14:51: Dre’ Bly gets the crowd involved, waving his arms. The first play of the game is an incomplete pass with Reggie Bush as the target on the sideline.

13:30: Ebenezer Ekuban gets involved with a seven-yard sack on third down to force a punt. Eddie Royal is back to receive, finds a hole and takes it just past midfield before he’s brought down at the Saints 45. It’s a 22-yard return.

Broncos vs. Saints: Pregame Notes

September 21st, 2008 - 12:34pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by Gray Caldwell

12:26 MDT: Week 3 has arrived. Just sitting up in the press box watching some of the early games. Atlanta is handling Kansas City, but the Raiders are in a close one with the Bills, up two at halftime.

12:30 MDT: Brett Kern is on the field, warming up wearing the Broncos alternate orange jersey with white pants. The team will be sporting the jersey twice this season, looking to add a little good mojo to the orange against the Saints today.

12:31 MDT: The Saints’ punter, Steve Weatherford, is on the field wearing a white jersey with gold pants. Fans are funneling into INVESCO Field at Mile High, and the Chiefs game is on the big screen. Looks like Tyler Thigpen just threw his first touchdown as a professional.

12:34 MDT: I’m headed down to the field to grab some pictures of warm-ups. I’ll check back in in about a half-hour.

1:09 MDT: Back with the pictures. It’s perfect football weather on the field. Sunny, but not too hot, because there are some clouds in the sky that change the temperature by it seems like 10 degrees every time they block the sun.

That Was Huge

September 18th, 2008 - 7:42pm by Ryan TorainOther posts by Ryan Torain

I know I started out last week’s post with a wow, but I’ve got to do it again.

Wow. That win against the Chargers was huge. It was definitely something I’ve never experienced. It was an amazing feeling from start to finish, and I can’t wait to get out there and give the crowd some emotion — just have some fun out there myself.

I had chills all through my body. It was electrifying. All day I was just so excited for kickoff and for the game to get underway, just to see what was going to happen. And clearly great things happened, now we’ve just got to keep that going.

I’ll tell you fans one thing — you’re loud. It got so loud out there. You were definitely into it, and it was exciting and so much fun. I can’t wait to get out there on the field and do it myself.
