Perspective Only Makes Manning Greater

January 2nd, 2013 - 1:20pm by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

When fans see or hear that quarterback Peyton Manning was named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week for the final regular season week of the National Football League season, there can be some temptation to treat this as routine news.

But there is nothing routine about greatness. Just because it happens a lot, that does not diminish it in any way.

John Elway once told me that the definition of greatness for a player is to be great some of the time, but really good all the rest of the time.

Easy to say, hard to do.

The Player of the Week Award announced Wednesday is the 23rd of Manning’s brilliant (yet probably understated) career. It ties him with Tom Brady for the most ever, each with that total of 23.

The Broncos were the only team in the NFL in 2012 that did not allow a single 300-yard passer.

No. 1
Denver’s 38-3 win against Kansas City coupled with Indianapolis’ 28-16 win against Houston meant the Broncos finished with the AFC’s No. 1 playoff seed and tied for the NFL’s best regular-season record in 2012, finishing 13-3.

Quarterback Peyton Manning finished the season with Broncos records in completions (400), passing yards (4,659), completion percentage (68.6 pct.), touchdowns (37), passer rating (105.9) and 300-yard games (9).

The Broncos are one of just three teams in NFL history to win 11 consecutive games by seven or more points. Denver joins the 1942 Chicago Bears (11) and the 2005 Indianapolis Colts (13) as the only teams to accomplish that feat. Manning was the signal caller for two of those three teams.

What Went Right, What Went Wrong: Kansas City

December 30th, 2012 - 9:18pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

WHAT WENT RIGHT

488-119

The Broncos dominated Sunday’s game from start to finish, outgaining the Chiefs by 369 total yards. Denver racked up 38 points on offense and officially kept the Chiefs out of the end zone in the 2012 season.

The defense also held Pro Bowl running back Jamaal Charles to just 53 rushing yards. Quarterback Brady Quinn had just 49 passing yards and was sacked four times.

WHAT WENT WRONG

ONE TURNOVER

With Denver driving, up 7-0, running back Ronnie Hillman took a carry off the right tackle for 4 yards — but coughed up the football. Cornerback Brandon Flowers returned the fumble 64 yards to the Denver 12-yard line.

Hillman did not receive any carries after the play. Head Coach John Fox was asked if that was because of the rookie’s fumble.

“I would say that is fair,” he said.

Broncos vs. Chiefs: Key Plays

December 30th, 2012 - 7:03pm by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

First-and-10 from the Kansas City 20, 15:00 to play, first quarter: On the first play from scrimmage, the defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson stuffed Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles for no gain, setting the tone for the game. The AFC’s leading rusher would go on to finish with just 53 yards in the game.

First-and-10 from the Denver 31, 13:02 to play, first quarter: On the Broncos’ first offensive snap of the game, quarterback Peyton Manning connected with wide receiver Brandon Stokley for a 29-yard pickup. Much like the defense set the tone on its first opportunity, so did the offense. Denver would go on to gain 488 yards of offense and post 38 points in the win.

Third-and-three from the Denver 5, 14:56 to play in the second quarter: After the Chiefs returned a Broncos fumble to the Denver 12-yard line, the defense stood its ground and forced the chiefs to settle for a field goal. Quarterback Brady Quinn’s third-down pass was incomplete and Ryan Succop came on for a 23-yard field goal, which represented the only Chiefs points of the game.

Third-and-one from the Kansas City 24, :47 to play in the second quarter: Needing a first down to keep the two-minute drive alive, fullback Jacob Hester picked up 8 yards on a carry. After Manning spiked the ball, he connected with wide receiver Eric Decker on the next play for a 16-yard score with just :10 remaining on the first-half clock.

Third-and-one from the Kansas City 31, 11:48 to play in the third quarter: Facing a third down on the opening possession of the second half, the Broncos turned to Lance Ball to keep the drive going. The running back gained 4 of his game-high 66 yards on the play. Four snaps later, Manning hit wide receiver Demaryius Thomas in the end zone for a 13-yard score that increased the Broncos’ lead to 28-3.

Broncos vs. Chiefs: Quotables

December 30th, 2012 - 7:02pm by Tyler EverettOther posts by

HEAD COACH JOHN FOX

On what it means to be the No. 1 seed
“Well, that means we are the No. 1 seed. We get a week off, which is nice. We got a lot of things to work on and we will take full advantage of that this next week. We will find out who we play officially at the end of the week. We will have it narrowed down starting tomorrow, and so we will start working on whoever it may be. We start this second season, tournament, playoff season, whatever you want to call it. You know, they had people picked to win last year and it didn’t work out that way. So it doesn’t change much when they start doing playoff seedings in my experience.”

On his 100th victory
“Yeah, I think any time you can reach any kind of pinnacle in anything. Our owner thought I was a hundred years old, and I said no just a hundred wins. No, I’m teasing. It is an accomplishment but it’s something of a lot of people’s work. It wasn’t one guy. I have a great staff. I have been with great players and it is a proud mark. I think three more would make it even better. This playoff year, I don’t want to say this year because it is ambiguous, but the next three games.”

On the running game today
“Yeah, we started emphasizing that about a month ago. We put our guys in pads and challenged them, they responded. You know when you get to this time of year, there is a certain mental toughness it takes and you could run into weather and just to close a game, all the situational things we worked on, you need that. We are a work in progress; we are not a finished product by any stretch. But I think we have gotten better over the last month.”

Denver Defeats K.C., Locks Up No. 1 Seed

December 30th, 2012 - 5:10pm by Sam DavisOther posts by

The Broncos locked up the No. 1 seed in the AFC with a 38-3 win against the Chiefs at Sports Authority Field at Mile High on Sunday.

The victory guarantees them a first-round playoff bye and homefield advantage throughout the playoffs.

Quarterback Peyton Manning led the way with 304 passing yards on 23-of-29 passing with three touchdowns and a quarterback rating of 144.8. He set multiple franchise records with his 2012 numbers.

Wide receivers Eric Decker and Demaryius Thomas each made highlight-reel touchdown catches. Decker finished with seven catches for 76 yards and two touchdowns while Thomas finished with seven catches for 122 yards and one touchdown.

Denver’s rushing attack was led by a committee of Knowshon Moreno, Lance Ball and Jacob Hester. Ball and Moreno accumulated 15 carries each and Hester finished with seven rushes for a career-high 53 yards. The Broncos finished with 170 yards rushing.

The defense, meanwhile, held Jamaal Charles and the Kansas City Chiefs to just 93 total rushing yards.

It sacked Chiefs quarterback Brady Quinn four times and allowed their offense to gain only 26 yards through the air.

Safety Rahim Moore and linebacker Keith Brooking each made their first sack of the season on Sunday.

The Broncos finish with a record of 13-3, tied for the best record in the NFL. They will take the field two weeks from now at Sports Authority Field at Mile High in the Divisional Round.

Ball Finishes Drive, Makes It 35-3

December 30th, 2012 - 4:36pm by Sam DavisOther posts by

A three-and-out that featured linebacker Keith Brooking’s first sack since 2010 helped set up the Denver offense for its fifth touchdown drive of the game.

An 8-yard completion to tight end Virgil Green and a 9-yard completion to wideout Eric Decker helped get Denver moving.

A 15-yard defensive pass intereference call on a pass intended for tight end Jacob Tamme put Denver across midfield to the Denver 41-yard line.

A play later, Manning faked a handoff from the shotgun formation and lofted one for wideout Demaryius Thomas, who made a striding, over-the-shoulder catch to the K.C. 3-yard line.

Running back Lance Ball finished the drive off with a 3-yard touchdown run, his first of the season and second of his career.

After the score, Denver leads 35-3 with 1:04 remaining in the third quarter.

On the drive, Manning topped the 300-yard mark for the 72nd time of his career, extending an NFL record he already owns. It is the ninth time this season that Manning has topped that mark, which ties a career-best. In the game, Manning is 23-of-29 for 304 yards and three touchdowns, good for a passer rating of 144.8.

Thomas passed 100 yards receiving on the drive for the ninth time of his career and eighth time in the regular season. He has done so seven times in the 2012 season. It is the second straight week Thomas as topped 100 yards, as he has piled up seven catches on 122 yards in the game – the sixth-highest receiving yards total of his career.
