Browns Bring Rookie Tandem to Denver

December 19th, 2012 - 1:54pm by Sam DavisOther posts by

The Broncos face a unique challenge on Sunday as they host a team that is out of playoff contention, but has won three of its last four games.

The Browns have 16 rookies on the team, including four starters on offense.

Quarterback Brandon Weeden and running back Trent Richardson were first-round selections by the club in 2012. Wide receiver Josh Gordon, who leads the team in receiving yards, and right tackle Mitchell Schwartz round out the rookie starters on offense.

Cleveland’s recent play has indicated that the club’s youth has developed and improved together over the course of the season.

“We’re going to grind it out together,” Richardson said in a conference call Wednesday. “It feels like you’re a college freshman again, when it comes down to it. We’re on that rampage, and that makes us feel good. It tells us that next year, we’re going to do a lot of damage. All our guys, we’re going to play together. When it comes time, the Cleveland Browns will be very special.”

If the Playoffs Started This Week: Week 16

December 18th, 2012 - 11:09am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

With just two weeks left in the regular season, the playoff picture remains extremely fluid in both the AFC and NFC. We thought we’d take a look at the AFC picture as it relates to the Broncos.

There was a bit of a shakeup in the standings this week. Of the AFC playoff contenders, only Houston, Denver and Cincinnati won. New England, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Indianapolis and the New York Jets all lost.

New England’s loss coupled with Denver’s win means Denver now moves to the No. 2 seed in the AFC and is in line for a first-round bye.

Currently, Houston and Denver would have first-round byes as the top two seeds. Meanwhile, the Patriots would host the Cincinnati Bengals and the Ravens would host the Indianapolis Colts in the Wild Card round.

If the Broncos win out, they will hold on to their first-round bye. If the Texans also lose out, Denver could end up with the No. 1 overall seed. In other words, in addition to the Broncos game, the contest Denver fans should keep an eye on in Week 16 pits Minnesota’s No. 4 rushing offense — averaging 160 yards per game — against Houston’s No. 5 rushing defense — allowing 93 yards per game.

Here’s a look at who the teams currently in the top six — plus 7-7 Pittsburgh — have remaining on their schedules:

Broncos at Bills: Key Plays

December 24th, 2011 - 7:56pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

Second-and-10 at the Denver 27 (12:20, 1st quarter): Willis McGahee took his second carry of the game and made it count, sprinting 24 yards up the field. That put him over the 1,000-yard rushing mark for the season, making him the second player in NFL history to run for 1,000 yards with three different franchises, joining Ricky Watters. It also jump-started the Broncos’ first offensive possession, an 11-play drive capped off by a 1-yard Tim Tebow touchdown run.

Fourth-and-8 at the Denver 10 (6:10, 2nd quarter): After a false start penalty, Dave Rayner lined up for a 28-yard field goal. He had already missed two attempts wide left earlier in the game – a 45-yarder and a 31-yarder. But the kicker knocked this one through the uprights – the first of four he would make in the game – to give Buffalo its first points of the contest.

Third-and-1 at the Denver 30 (4:56, 2nd quarter): Jeremiah Johnson is stopped for no gain by two Bills, forcing a punt. It marks Denver’s fourth consecutive three-and-out after their opening-drive touchdown. This one is costly, as Britton Colquitt’s 50-yard punt is fielded by Leodis McKelvin, who sprints up the sideline for an 80-yard return touchdown. It gave Buffalo its first lead, 10-7. McKelvin set a Bills single-game franchise record with 135 punt return yards on the day.

Broncos at Bills: Quotables

December 24th, 2011 - 7:55pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

HEAD COACH JOHN FOX

On the loss:
“The reality is we’re 8-7. We’ve won one more game than we’ve lost and today wasn’t good enough. We were minus-four in the turnover ratio. I thought they outplayed us in all three phases. Offense, defense and the kicking game. I thought we got a bad break on our return for a touchdown. Minus-four in the turnover ratio, much like a week ago, that’s kind of what happens.”

On a comeback attempt:
“We had opportunities but it went the other way. They stretched their lead out with two turnovers for scores and my hats off to them. They were ready to play and they outplayed us.”

On the AFC East:
“It’s a good division. I think we drew the NFC North and the AFC East and I think they are both good divisions. I think that’s why the AFC West is a pretty close race.”

TIM TEBOW

On Buffalo’s defense:
“You have to give them a lot of credit. They played well and they executed. They came up with big plays and I just have to do a better job of not giving them opportunities.”

Final Score: Bills 40, Broncos 14

December 24th, 2011 - 2:11pm by Kenny LeganOther posts by

The game has gone final in Buffalo with the Bills beating the Broncos 40-14.

The Broncos started off strong, going up 7-0 after a 1-yard touchdown run from quarterback Tim Tebow on the Broncos first drive. However, after a field goal and touchdown from Buffalo, Denver never could regain the lead.

Tebow threw a touchdown to Daniel Fells to conclude the first drive of the third quarter and bring Denver within three, 17-14. But the Broncos couldn’t overcome Tebow’s four interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns.

Check back soon for more coverage and reaction from the locker room.
