Broncos Feeling Recharged

December 10th, 2012 - 2:38pm by Tyler EverettOther posts by

While 28 of 32 NFL teams spent Sunday battling in hard-fought games, the Broncos spent the day resting and relaxing.

Denver’s last game – a 26-13 victory against AFC West rival Oakland — presented the challenge of playing two games in five days. But it also meant extra time off to prepare for the team’s next game – the upcoming showdown with the 9-4 Baltimore Ravens.

“It’s huge,” cornerback Champ Bailey said of the time off after the win over the Raiders. “I think we’re going to need all of it to get ready for that team. That’s a good football team. We’re going to take all this time to make sure we’re ready to go up there and win.”

During the 2011 season, the Broncos won the GMC Never Say Never Moment of the Week five times.

The first four wins were for the team’s comeback, overtime win at San Diego in Week 12, game-winning drive late in the fourth quarter against the Jets in Week 11, hard-fought victory at Kansas City in Week 10 and overtime win at Miami in Week 7.

But it was the club’s fifth and final win of the season that is now up for the Never Say Never Moment of the Year.

Broncos vs. Patriots: Key Plays

December 18th, 2011 - 8:05pm by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

First-and-10 from the New England 38 (11:20, 1st quarter): Jeremiah Johnson took his first carry of the day for a gain of 25 yards into the Patriots’ red zone. Denver capitalized two plays later when Tim Tebow powered the ball into the end zone from 9-yards out to give Denver a 6-0 lead on its first possession of the game.

Third-and-9 from the New England 21 (9:04, 1st quarter): Tom Brady stayed patient on third down and found his tight end Aaron Hernandez open over the middle. The play resulted in a 46-yard gain and sustained the Patriots’ first drive of the game, which culminated in a Brady-to-Chad Ochocinco 33-yard touchdown pass two plays later.

First-and-10 from the Denver 23 (8:37, 2nd quarter): Ron Brace stripped Lance Ball after a 2-yard gain and Rob Ninkovich recovered the loose ball at the Broncos 19-yard line. New England turned the turnover into a 21-yard field goal from Stephen Gostkowski to reclaim the lead at 17-16.

Broncos vs. Patriots: Quotables

December 18th, 2011 - 7:48pm by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

Head Coach John Fox

On the loss
“I don’t want to blame it on any particular area or people. I think all in all we hung with them physically, but mentally I thought there were certain areas as far as dropping the ball on the ground and the turnovers were really the big difference. You’re not going to be minus three against the New England Patriots and win very many ballgames. Having played them very many times, I know that to be true.”

On turnovers
“Our guys fought, and we tried to get back into it. But the reality is, we’re not at the stage where we can overcome minus three (turnovers).”

On QB Tim Tebow
“It’s usually a lot more fun when you win, but I thought he improved. He’ll continue to improve. This was a setback no doubt about that, but sometimes setbacks are setups for bigger things to come. That’s the way we’ll approach it.”

Final: Patriots 41, Broncos 23

December 18th, 2011 - 5:34pm by Kenny LeganOther posts by

The score has gone final here at Sports Authority Field at Mile High, with New England beating Denver 41-23.

The Broncos started off strong, scoring 13 points in the first quarter to take a 13-7 lead after the first frame. However, a second quarter that saw the Broncos turn the ball over three times on fumbles hurt Denver, as New England capitalized and took a 27-16 halftime lead.

The Patriots maintained that margin throughout the rest of the game. Tebow brought the Broncos within 11 on a two-yard touchdown run with 8:41 left in the fourth quarter. But Tom Brady answered, leading the Patriots on a 9-play, 90-yard scoring drive for the final score of the game.

However, with Detroit’s 28-27 victory over Oakland, the Broncos still have a one-game lead in the AFC West.

We’ll have more coverage and reaction from the locker room shortly.

Patriots Score Late

December 18th, 2011 - 5:14pm by Kenny LeganOther posts by

With just 4:10 left in the fourth quarter, the New England Patriots have extended their lead back to 18 points on a 1-yard touchdown run by BenJarvus Green-Ellis.

After Tebow scored to make it a two-possession game, Tom Brady took over and led New England on a 9-play, 90-yard drive that took 4:31 off the clock. The big play on the drive came on a 38-yard pass to Rob Gronkowski on second-and-6 from the Patriots 24-yard line.

Denver now takes over at its own 20-yard line, down by three scores.

Tebow Runs it In

December 18th, 2011 - 5:00pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

A 2-yard touchdown run by Tim Tebow and Matt Prater’s ensuing extra point trimmed New England’s lead to 34-23.

The drive started all the way back at the 11-yard line, and was kick-started by back-to-back passes from Tebow to Demaryius Thomas for a gain of 22 yards.

Later, a big sack on second down left the Broncos with a third-and-18, but Tebow once again his Thomas for a 39-yard strike into Patriots territory. On the very next play, Tebow looked to be running to his left, but Lance Ball’s defender left the running back to try to contain Tebow. So Tebow simply dumped the ball off to Ball, and the back sprinted all the way to the 2-yard line.

The next play was Tebow’s 2-yard touchdown run. 8:41 remains in the fourth quarter.

Dumervil Continues Sack Streak

December 18th, 2011 - 4:52pm by Kenny LeganOther posts by

No doubt about it, the hardest hit of the game just came from defensive end Elvis Dumervil.

On second-and-10 from the Broncos 49-yard line, Dumervil came off the left edge unblocked and sacked Brady. The hit knocked the quarterback off his feet as Brady never saw Dumervil coming.

Dumervil now has at least a half of a sack in seven consecutive games. He has 8.5 sacks on the year and 51.5 for his career.

The sack knocked the Patriots back six yards and punted after failing to pick up the first down on the next play.

Woodhead Extends Patriots Lead

December 18th, 2011 - 4:37pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

The Patriots added to their lead in the third quarter, driving 85 yards in eight plays, capped off by a 10-yard touchdown run by Danny Woodhead.

New England leads 34-16.

The highlights of the drive included a 21-yard pass from Tom Brady to BenJarvus Green-Ellis, a 13-yard connection from Brady to Wes Welker and an 8-yard pass to Aaron Hernandez that was made longer by a 15-yard facemask penalty on the Broncos.

The Broncos have a first-and-10 on their own 8-yard line after a short return with 36 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
