Inside the Numbers: Week 15

For the first game in the 2012 season, the Broncos did not turn the ball over in Sunday’s win against Baltimore.

1
Returner Trindon Holliday leads the NFL with a 35.2 kick return average and is tops in the league with an 11.4 punt return average since joining the Broncos in Week 6. He is also the only player in the league to have a 14-0 record through the first 15 weeks of the 2012 season.

Quarterback Peyton Manning became the first quarterback in the Super Bowl era to achieve nine 11-win seasons. He extended his NFL record for 4,00-yard passing seasons with his 12th this year.

2
With the Broncos win and Patriots loss in Week 15, Denver can clinch the AFC’s No. 2 seed and a first-round bye if it wins the final two games of the regular season against Cleveland (12/23) and Kansas City (12/3).

LB Wesley Woodyard and CB Chris Harris are two of just three players in the NFL to register more than two sacks and more than two interceptions through Week 15 of the 2012 season.

Moreno Nominated for FedEx Ground Award Again

December 18th, 2012 - 7:51am by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

For the second consecutive week, running back Knowshon Moreno topped the 100-yard mark in Sunday’s 34-17 win at Baltimore.

And once again, the fourth-year running back has been nominated for the FedEx Ground NFL Player of the Week.

Moreno carried 22 times for 118 yards with one touchdown against the Ravens to mark his fourth career 100-yard game.

“It starts up front,” Moreno said after the game. “Those guys up front, they open up the holes and push those other big guys back. We’re just running the ball so it’s easy when those guys are doing the job.”

His 122 rushing yards marked the most by a visiting player against the Baltimore Ravens since the 2010 season and he turned in just the 17th 100-yard rushing game against the Ravens by a visiting running back in the franchise’s history.

His game against Baltimore was highlighted by a 20-yard run in the first quarter during which he hurdled over Ravens safety Ed Reed.

“It’s unbelievable,” fullback Jacob Hester said of the play. “You see guys that do it when people are on the ground or people try to tackle them low. But you don’t see many people do that to Ed Reed, who’s standing straight up. He did that to a Hall-of-Famer who was literally standing straight up and he leaped right over him. Knowshon’s a special player. He’s one of the few guys who can run tough as well as run to the outside and we’re glad to have him.”

Moreno scored his third touchdown of the season on a 6-yard carry that gave the Broncos a 31-3 lead in the third quarter.

Decker Leads Air-Attack in Second Straight Week

December 17th, 2012 - 12:48pm by Sam DavisOther posts by

Cornerback Chris Harris provided a pivotal momentum swing just before the first half of Sunday’s win against the Ravens ended with his 98-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Coming out of halftime, wide receiver Eric Decker saw to it that the momentum remained in the Broncos’ favor.

On the team’s first possession of the second half, Decker moved the chains with a 15-yard catch. Two Knowshon Moreno carries later, the third-year wideout was in the end zone on a 51-yard catch-and-run.

The score gave Denver a 24-3 second-half lead.

Broncos at Ravens: Key Plays

December 16th, 2012 - 8:28pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

Third-and-1 from DEN 46, 12:17 1st quarter: Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco took the snap and executed a quarterback sneak for what would have been a first down, but defensive tackle Justin Bannan wrenched the ball away for a fumble, and safety Rahim Moore fell on the ball to give the Broncos possession. Denver’s offense responded with a touchdown drive.

Second-and-6 from BAL 31, 8:12 2nd quarter: On their sixth drive of the game, the Ravens finally picked up a first down thanks to a 14-yard run by Bernard Pierce. To that point, the Broncos had forced a fumble followed by four consecutive three-and-outs. On the very next play, an offensive holding penalty got Baltimore behind the chains, and the team had to punt right back to Denver four plays later as the Broncos defense continued to dominate the first half.

First-and-10 from DEN 27, 12:59 3rd quarter: The Ravens opened the second half with a steady drive into Denver territory. But on first down, linebacker Von Miller stopped running back Ray Rice at the line of scrimmage for no gain. Two consecutive incompletions by quarterback Joe Flacco let the Ravens with a fourth down, and Baltimore had to settle for a 45-yard field goal. Denver scored a touchdown on its ensuing drive to extend its lead to 24-3.

Third-and-8 from BAL 45, 7:14 4th quarter: After Baltimore scored its only touchdown of the game up to that point, the Broncos offense was driving down the field, looking to answer. But a long drive would have been for naught if the Broncos couldn’t convert a third-and-long near midfield. Quarterback Peyton Manning dropped back and hit wide receiver Eric Decker for a 13-yard gain and a first down — and Ravens cornerback Cary Williams tacked 15 yards onto that with an unnecessary roughness penalty. Four play later, the Broncos capped off a 15-play drive that took 9:59 off the clock with a Matt Prater field goal.

Second-and-16 from BAL 29, 0:05 4th quarter: Defensive end Elvis Dumervil raced around his defender to sack Flacco, taking down the Baltimore quarterback for the team’s second sack in as many plays to end the game and seal the win.

What Went Right, What Went Wrong: Baltimore

WHAT WENT RIGHT

No Turnovers

For the first time this season, the Broncos finished a game without turning the ball over a single time.

“I thought that was pretty significant,” quarterback Peyton Manning said. “We’d love to keep that going.”

Meanwhile, the Denver defense grabbed two takeaways — a fumble forced by defensive tackle Justin Bannan and recovered by safety Rahim Moore along with an interception that cornerback Chris Harris returned 98 yards for a touchdown.

“We knew that turnovers were going to be important in this game,” Head Coach John Fox said. “We ended up plus-2. It’s something that Baltimore’s done a tremendous job of taking the ball away and not giving it up. They’re plus-12 on the season.”

Bottling Up Playmakers

With Ravens wide receiver Anquan Boldin coming off a two-touchdown game and running back Ray Rice fresh off a 100-yard effort against the Washington Redskins, the Broncos knew slowing down those two playmakers would be paramount if they wanted to leave M&T Bank Stadium with a win.

By the end of Sunday’s game, Rice had just 38 yards on 12 carries and only 3 yards through the air on three catches. Boldin, meanwhile, was targeted six times. He didn’t have a single reception.

“We shut the run down,” Bannan said. “We set the tone in the first half and kind of went from there.”

Baltimore’s other big-time receiver, Torrey Smith, had just one catch for 14 yards.

Broncos at Ravens: Quotables

HEAD COACH JOHN FOX

On CB Chris Harris’ interception being a turning point in the game
“It was a huge play. They’re down knocking on the door and they threw an old diagonal route outside to 81, Anquan Boldin, and Chris did a good job kind of hanging back there and then stepped in front and it was right in front of our bench so he had a lot of direction on the way down that sideline.”
