Record Day For Marshall

December 14th, 2009 - 10:55am by jim_saccomanoOther posts by jim_saccomano

You never know what you will see when you attend or tune into a sports event.

Sunday at Indianapolis, the Colts just had too much overall for the Broncos, although Denver had some opportunities after falling behind 21-0.

But a shining light for the Broncos was the play of wide receiver Brandon Marshall, who truly had a day for the ages in setting a new NFL record with 21 receptions — an astonishing single-game total.

He had 200 receiving yards with two touchdowns, and the 21 catches were six more than any other player in the league has had in a single game this year. He surpassed the previous record, which was 20 by Terrell Owens.

Marshall now has had two of the top four single-game performances in NFL history. He had 18 at home against the Chargers in 2008, which currently is tied for third best all-time.

The Beast, congrats on NFL record

December 14th, 2009 - 9:21am by mark_cooperOther posts by mark_cooper

Probably shouldn’t name a post like I did since it’s a team sport but could help myself. Twenty-one catches is amazing … no … AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Although bittersweet and not enough for the win, simply AMAZING!! Like a man amongst boys. At times Orton would just look right at him and go to him. That can get dangerous, but yesterday it worked.

So, really not much to say other than we’re a pretty DANG good team if we didn’t make mistakes. I have to remark on what Head Coach Josh McDaniels said. “You know where the bar is.” We have the ability to play to it but mistakes, penalties and efficiencies killed us. Short yardage? Missed assignments. Period. No one ever crosses your face that your suppose to block…PERIOD.

Broncos at Colts: Second Half Live Blog

December 13th, 2009 - 12:47pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by Gray Caldwell

Q3 15:00: Eddie Royal is back deep to receive the kickoff to start the second half.

Q3 14:54: Royal picks up 21 yards on the return out to the 19-yard line. The offense is back on the field, and Kyle Orton hands off to Knowshon Moreno to start the drive. The rookie carries it to the 24-yard line. On second down, Orton finds Brandon Marshall, who tries to spin out of tackle. He is brought down, however, after a gain of three. Now it’s 3rd-and-2, and Orton is in the shotgun. He drops back and fires to Royal, but the receiver can’t haul it in before being tackled. The incompletion brings in Mitch Berger for a punt. T.J. Rushing calls for a fair catch at the 19-yard line — it’s a 54-yard punt by Berger.

Q3 13:40: Peyton Manning takes the snap under center before faking a handoff and dropping back. He fires a pass toward Dallas Clark under pressure by Vonnie Holliday. The pass falls incomplete, as Ty Law was right there with the coverage on Clark.

Q3 13:13: A two-yard run by Joseph Addai brings up 3rd-and-8 for the Colts. Elvis Dumervil chases Manning, who lets loose a pass for Clark. It is hauled in momentarily, but Darcel McBath bursts in for a big hit to break up the pass. That brings up fourth down for the Colts, and Royal is deep to receive the punt. He finds a little space after the 50-yard punt, picking up five yards after reversing field. The offense will take over on its own 34-yard line.

COIN TOSS: The captains are at midfield for the coin toss. As the visitors, the Broncos get to make the call. They win the toss, and elect to defer to the second half. Indianapolis will receive to start the game, and we’re almost underway.

OPENING KICKOFF After a return by Chad Simpson to the 20-yard line, Spencer Larsen is down. He walks off the field flanked by trainers.

Q1 14:53: Now the defense is on the field, and the starters consist of Vonnie Holliday, Ronald Fields, Ryan McBean, Elvis Dumervil, D.J. Williams, Mario Haggan, Champ Bailey, Andre’ Goodman, Ty Law, Brian Dawkins and Renaldo Hill. The first play of the game is a completion from Peyton Manning to Pierre Garcon down to the 49-yard line, before Goodman forces the receiver out of bounds.

Q1 13:50: Manning drops back and finds tight end Gijon Robinson near the first-down marker. The refs mark the spot, and the Colts are left with a 3rd-and-2. Manning drops back and gets the ball quickly to Joseph Addai, who is tackled immediately by Law, but the running back stretches the ball out for the first down.

Broncos at Colts: Pregame Blog

From high up in the Lucas Oil Stadium press box, it’s almost an aerial view of the field. This is easily the highest above the field we’ve been this season, but it should be interesting to watch as plays develop.

It’s a gloomy day in Indianapolis, but you’d never know in the stadium. An announcement was just made that the gates are open, and fans are slowly making their way toward their seats. A few player are already on the field warming up, including Kyle Orton, Marcus Thomas, Darcel McBath, Alphonso Smith and Chris Simms.

Speaking of the gloomy day, normally we would put the weather report here, but obviously with the contest being played in a dome, it won’t affect anything come game time.

We’ll post the inactives as soon as we get them, and Zach Eisendrath is on the field taking pregame pictures as we speak.

Now Hold On Just A Minute

I know the Colts are undefeated. I know they have the best quarterback in the NFL. I know they are hosting the Broncos.

But unlike certain past trips to Indianapolis, the Broncos have a shot to win.

Most Broncos fans have a tough time forgetting the debacles of playoffs past in Indianapolis. If they did forget, this week probably reminded them of the Broncos inability to keep those games competitive.

To this point, the Colts have shown themselves to be the best team in the AFC. At home, they are rightly the favorite against a Broncos team that keeps showing people wrong.

I would not be shocked, however, if the Broncos at least kept the game competitive and even won. Here are a few reasons why.

As Fundamental As They Come

December 10th, 2009 - 2:56pm by Zach EisendrathOther posts by Zach Eisendrath

On Tuesday, a six-person committee of both USA Football and NFL Players Association members selected Ryan Clady to the inaugural USA Football/NFLPA “All-Fundamentals” Team. The second-year lineman was recognized as one of the league’s most fundamentally-sound players and a community service activist.

Clady and Head Coach Josh McDaniels reflected on that prestigious honor during a press conference at Dove Valley before the team’s Thursday practice session.

McDaniels called Clady “one of the most athletic left tackles” in the game today, praising the 6-foot-6, 325-pound left tackle’s ability to play with constant effort for 60 minutes.

“In order to be as successful and productive as he’s been at left tackle, you have to be good fundamentally,” McDaniels said. “You can’t guess. You have to use your hands and your feet equally effectively, and he does that. (He’s a) very smart player. He knows what he needs to do, not only in the pass-protection game but also in run blocking. He does a nice job working with the other interior linemen. (This is) a very well-deserved award for him.”

Stepping Back Into Starting Shoes

December 9th, 2009 - 4:18pm by Chris GentilvisoOther posts by Chris Gentilviso

After Wednesday’s announcement that Ryan Harris was placed on injured reserve, the majority of future reps at right tackle will belong to Tyler Polumbus.

A starter from Nov. 9 against Pittsburgh through Nov. 26 against the Giants, the Colorado alum has gradually made greater strides on one of the stronger lines in the league.

“He knows what we’re doing and he knows our system,” Head Coach Josh McDaniels said. “He communicates well with the other players and he’s playing beside good players. We think that we have a guy who’s getting better each week.”

Broncos Sign Taylor, Place Harris on IR

December 9th, 2009 - 9:51am by Chris GentilvisoOther posts by Chris Gentilviso

The Broncos have a new tackle in town, announcing the signing of free agent Herb Taylor on Wednesday. After leaving last Sunday’s game at Kansas City, Ryan Harris was also placed on injured reserve with a toe injury.

A third-year tackle, Taylor entered the league with the Chiefs as a sixth-round pick in then 2007 NFL Draft. He was waived by Kansas City at the end of the team’s 2009 training camp.

Taylor appeared in 18 games for the Chiefs, including all 16 contests last season. As a rookie in 2007, he appeared in two contests, was inactive for 11 games and dressed but did not play in three games.

A college stalwart at Texas Christian University, Taylor earned first-team All-Mountain West recognition during both his junior and senior seasons. He set a school record by making 48 consecutive starts and helped the Horned Frogs to a win in the Poinsettia Bowl during his senior season.

Clady, Cutler Up for Awards

December 9th, 2008 - 11:08am by Adam ZinserOther posts by Adam Zinser

Another big win for the Broncos, another round of award nominations.

Ryan Clady is up for Diet Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week while the quarterback he protects, Jay Cutler, is up for Fed Ex Air Player of the Week.

Clady led an offensive line that allowed QB Jay Cutler to pass for 286 yards and two touchdowns, prevented Kansas City from recording a sack and helped Denver total 139 yards rushing in the Broncos’ 24-17 win over the Chiefs. Though this is the first time Clady has been nominated, he is the fourth Bronco to be up for the award after Peyton Hillis, Spencer Larsen and Eddie Royal have all been nominated and won.

No other team in the league has had more than one rookie win the award — the Broncos have three and now potentially four.

Titans running back Chris Johnson, Texans running back Steve Slaton, Cardinals cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart are the other rookies up for the honor.

Cutler completed 32 of 40 passes for 286 yards and two touchdowns in the Broncos’ 24-17 win over the Kansas City Chiefs. Cutler has already won this award twice in 2008, most recently after the Broncos’ win over the Jets.

Head to NFL.com to vote for Clady and Cutler!
