Inside the Numbers: Week 13

December 3rd, 2012 - 1:32pm by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

1
Defensive Tackle Mitch Unrein’s 1-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter against Tampa Bay was the first offensive touchdown by a defensive lineman in Broncos history. The play represented the first receiving score by an NFL defensive lineman since Ryan Denney (Buf.) on Sept. 27, 2009.

3
Head Coach John Fox became just the third coach to win division titles in each of his first two years with a club after inheriting a team with a losing record. He is just the second coach to take a last-place team and lead it to consecutive division championships in his first two years.

5
Linebacker Von Miller recorded his first career interception and returned it 26 yards for a score, to mark another career first. The play marked the fifth defensive touchdown of the season for the Broncos, and was the 11th non-offensive touchdown by the team under Fox.

7
The Broncos won their seventh straight game on Sunday against Tampa Bay to mark the franchise’s fourth-longest win streak, and the longest since the 1998 season when the team won 13 in a row.

What Went Right, What Went Wrong: Tampa Bay

December 2nd, 2012 - 8:48pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

WHAT WENT RIGHT

The Manning-to-Thomas Connection
Quarterback Peyton Manning and Demaryius Thomas connected for 99 yards and two touchdowns on Sunday. The first score came with a defensive back seemingly draped all over Thomas.

“I threw that ball as early as you can throw a pass,” Manning said afterward. “I threw that ball super early and Demaryius came around, kind of came right around the DB and made a heck of a catch. That was really a special play.”

The second touchdown was equally as impressive, as Thomas beat double coverage for the 10-yard catch in the end zone.

“I knew if he was going to check me, he wasn’t going to be able to stop be from cutting across his face and getting to where I needed to be,” Thomas said of the linebacker covering him before a safety came to help. “Peyton put the ball in a great spot and I made a play.”

The Von Miller Show
The AFC’s reigning Defensive Player of the Month kept up his hot play of late against the Buccaneers. He tied for the team lead with seven tackles, sacked Tampa Bay quarterback Josh Freeman, forcing a fumble on the same play, and intercepted him. He returned the pick 26 yards for a defensive touchdown.

“Defensive player of the year,” defensive end Elvis Dumervil said of his teammate. “For sure. What he has been doing, not only sacks, pressures, the impact he has had on the game, he should definitely be a strong candidate.”

The Third Quarter
Through 11 games this season, the fourth quarter has been Denver’s sweet spot. The Broncos have outscored opponents 124-37 in the frame.

On Sunday, it was the third quarter when Denver did its damage.

Both of Thomas’ touchdowns and Miller’s defensive score came during the third quarter. The 21-point outburst turned a 10-7 deficit into a 28-10 lead, which proved too much for the Buccaneers to overcome.

Broncos vs. Buccaneers: Key Plays

December 2nd, 2012 - 7:51pm by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

Below are some key (non-scoring) plays from Denver’s 31-23 win over Tampa Bay:

Third-and-2 from the Tampa Bay 28, : Right off the bat, Denver’s defense came up with a stop on third-and-short against one of the NFL’s top rushing attacks. Doug Martin was met at the line of scrimmage by defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson, who stopped the rookie 1-yard shy of the first-down mark to force a punt. The Broncos offense responded with a score to take a 7-0 lead.

Third-and-1 from the Tampa Bay 37: Having reached Buccaneers territory on its first possession, Denver’s offense needed a third-and-short conversion to extend the drive. They got just that as quarterback Peyton Manning connected with wide receiver Eric Decker for a pickup of 12. The offense put the first points of the day on the board six plays later when Manning found defensive tackle Mitch Unrein for a 1-yard score.

Third-and-11 from the Denver 15: Tampa Bay responded to Denver’s scoring drive with a march of their own. Inside the Denver red zone, the Broncos defense stood its ground, tackling Martin for a 1-yard loss and forcing an incompletion to bring up third-and-long. With good coverage beyond the sticks, Freeman had to check down to Mike Williams, and cornerback Chris Harris tackled the receiver immediately to force a field goal.

Broncos vs. Buccaneers: Quotables

December 2nd, 2012 - 6:51pm by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

HEAD COACH JOHN FOX

On postgame discussion about winning the division
“Other than acknowledge it—because it was one of our goals—we still have a lot of improvement to do as a football team. It’s just a starting point for us, really.”

On winning the division being a starting point on season achievements
“Well, there’s different championships. Your division is obviously one, everybody aspires to be in the conference championship but at the end of the day, everybody is looking for that world championship. It’s a great accomplishment, a tribute to the staff and coaches in that locker room. They did a fantastic job. We still have a whole quarter of the season left. We’ll see what happens.”

On winning back-to-back division titles in his first two years coaching the Broncos
“I really don’t have much to say about that. I’ve been blessed, there’s no doubt. This is a great city, great team, and I’m proud to be here.”

QUARTERBACK PEYTON MANNING

On winning the AFC West
“It feels good to get the win. It was the main goal coming in today playing a good team—a team with a lot of momentum. I thought we beat a good team here at home. Winning the division, that was certainly one of our goals. We still want to keep getting better throughout the season. Not a whole lot of time to think about it with a game on Thursday. But it sure feels good to get the win.”

Broncos Beat Bucs, Clinch AFC West Title

December 2nd, 2012 - 5:20pm by Sam DavisOther posts by

The Broncos defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31-23 on Sunday at Sports Authority Field at Mile High, improving to 9-3 and clinching the AFC West title.

Denver struck first on a 1-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Peyton Manning to defensive tackle Mitch Unrein. It was Unrein’s first career reception and touchdown.

The Bucs scored the next 10 points, however, and entered the locker room with a 10-7 advantage over the home team.

In the third quarter, the Broncos erupted for three touchdowns to break the game open. The first two were touchdowns from Manning to wide receiver Demaryius Thomas from 8 and 9 yards out. The third score in the third quarter came from the defense.

On a second-down play, Unrein hit quarterback Josh Freeman as he released the ball, and linebacker Von Miller was in the perfect place for the interception. After securing his first career pick, Miller returned it 26 yards for his first career touchdown, putting Denver up 28-10.

The Buccaneers scored 13 of the game’s final 16 points after the Miller touchdown, but the Broncos recovered a fourth-quarter onside kick and ran out the clock to end the game.

The 31-23 win marks Denver’s seventh consecutive victory. The team now faces a quick turnaround, heading to Oakland for a Thursday night divisional clash.

Bucs Make it 31-23 With Williams Touchdown

December 2nd, 2012 - 5:13pm by Sam DavisOther posts by

Following the Matt Prater missed field goal, the Buccaneers made it an 8-point game on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Josh Freeman to Mike Williams.

Williams caught the two previous passes from Freeman to get the Bucs down the field, picking up chunks of 14 and 28 yards.

Tampa Bay attempted an onside kick following the touchdown that wide receiver Eric Decker recovered with 2:33 remaining. Denver took over at its 49-yard line with the Bucs out of timeouts.

After the Matt Prater missed field goal, Tampa Bay took over on its own 37-yard line. The Bucs crossed midfield on a 24-yard reception by wide receiver Vincent Jackson.

On the next play, linebacker Von Miller came off the edge and strip-sacked quarterback Josh Freeman. The Bucs recovered the loose ball, but lost 7 yards on the play. It was Miller’s 15th sack of the year.

Freeman hit tight end Dallas Clark a play later for 9 yards, bringing up a fourth down from the 37-yard line. Tampa Bay attempted a field goal, and Connor Barth converted on the 55-yarder to make it 31-16 Broncos with 3:28 remaining.
