Starting to Groove

November 21st, 2012 - 3:46pm by Eric DeckerOther posts by

Looking around the locker room after last week’s win against the Chargers, you could tell there was still some disappointment. That’s just a testament to this team — we win, but we’re still frustrated with some of our performances. We just want to make sure that we’re running more consistently.

I think that even though it wasn’t our best game, this is the ultimate team sport. That’s why we play. Every week there are going to be mistakes, you’ve just got to correct them and get better. I think offensively we didn’t play good situational football, and that’s something that we’re going to focus on this week. Meanwhile, the defense played unbelievable. The beauty of it is you get another opportunity this week to get better. That’s really our focus.

Like they say, throw the records out when you play a division team. You have to. In this division, anyone can win. In this league, anyone can win. We talked this morning that Arrowhead’s a really tough place to play. The fan support there, the noise and just the whole atmosphere that Kansas City brings, it’s something that we’ve got to stay focused on and make sure that it doesn’t affect us as we’re executing our job on Sunday. One play at a time, one drive at a time.

From the front end to the back end, the Chiefs have got a lot of playmakers. Just watching film, they get after it in the run game, they put pressure on the quarterback in the passing game. Eric Berry, he fills for the run and Brandon Flowers is a Pro Bowl cornerback. So we’ve got some challenges ahead of us. We’ve got to, again, stay focused on our job and the task at hand.

Coach Fox has a saying, what’s better than five-in-a-row? Six-in-a-row. That’s the goal. I wrote earlier this year that great teams string wins together. That’s something that at the beginning of the year we struggled with, just finding that consistency overall as a team. But we’re finding who we want to be and creating an identity. It’s fun to win ballgames. It’s fun to win with these guys on this team. It’s a very unselfish team and everybody’s doing their part to win the ballgame. We’re starting to groove.

Porter Participates Early in Practice

November 21st, 2012 - 12:08pm by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

Although the Broncos received bad news on Wednesday when running back Willis McGahee was placed on injured reserve, there was a positive development on the injury front as cornerback Tracy Porter participated in the portion of practice open to the media for the first time in several weeks.

Porter has missed the past five games and has practiced just four times since symptoms related to a seizure he suffered in August flared up. He was listed as a limited participant on Wed., Oct. 24 and Wed., Oct. 31, a full participant on Thur., Nov 1, and a limited participant the last time the Broncos took the practice field on Nov. 16.

Prior to missing time, Porter played all five games for the Broncos, starting four of them. He made 21 tackles with one interception that he returned 43 yards to seal Denver’s Week 1 win over Pittsburgh. He was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week after that performance, in which he tied for the second-most pass breakups in a game in team history with five and ranked second on the team with eight tackles.

Porter was one of 51 Broncos out on the field at the start of individual drills with only cornerback Omar Bolden (concussion) missing. Bolden was on the field for the stretching portion of practice. With McGahee being placed on injured reserve earlier in the day, the team only has 52 players on its active roster at the moment.

UPDATE: Porter was listed as a full participant in Denver’s practice on Wednesday, marking the first full practice for the cornerback since Nov. 1. Cornerback Champ Bailey did not participate (non-injury reasons) and neither did Bolden. Defensive end Derek Wolfe (quadriceps), tight end Virgil Green (hamstring) and wide receiver Demaryius Thomas (knee) were limited. Guard Chris Kuper (ankle), defensive end Robert Ayers (groin) and running back Ronnie Hillman (hamstring) were all full participants.

Quinn to Start for Chiefs

November 21st, 2012 - 11:04am by Sam DavisOther posts by

On Wednesday, the Kansas City Chiefs announced that Brady Quinn will be the starting quarterback for Sunday’s game against the Broncos. It will be Quinn’s third start of the season — his first in Kansas City — after spending the prior two years with the Broncos and not appearing in a game.

“I like his leadership qualities,” Chiefs Head Coach Romeo Crennel said. “He has experience with a couple different teams and he’s seen a couple different things. I think that will bode well for him.”

Shortly after Crennel made the decision public, quarterback Brady Quinn spoke with Denver media on a conference call.

“Anytime you get the opportunity to start in the National Football League, you’re very blessed,” said Quinn, who has started 14 games since coming into the league in 2007 as the 22nd overall pick. “I haven’t had as many opportunities in six seasons as some guys get in one season. Any opportunity for me to play is good. I’m always learning, always trying to get better.”

Elway Discusses Defense, McGahee

November 20th, 2012 - 5:18pm by Tyler EverettOther posts by

On Tuesday, Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway and Chris Hall of DenverBroncos.com discussed the Broncos’ win over the Chargers, running back Willis McGahee’s injury and the upcoming game against the Chiefs in the latest installment of Elway Access.

With the Broncos’ 30-23 win over San Diego on Sunday, the team improved to 7-3 and took a three-game lead in the AFC West over the Chargers, who fell to 4-6. The victory puts the Broncos in firm control of the division race with six games remaining.

“I think that any time you get a win in this league, you have to be thrilled, especially against a divisional foe,” Elway said. “And if you look at the position we’re in, really being three games up, by winning this it puts us four games up with the tiebreaker on the Chargers with six to play. It was a big game for us to be able to put ourselves in the situation that we were.”

Though San Diego was able to hang around and keep things interesting by cutting the lead to seven with less than three minutes remaining, the Broncos prevailed despite the offense not firing on all cylinders. Elway was pleased with the bottom line, but said the performance left room for improvement.

“I think when you look back, we would have liked to have been able to get this thing over quicker than we did,” Elway said. “But the Chargers kept hanging in there and we had a chance to make some plays offensively, we just didn’t quite hit them. Defensively we played tremendous the first half. And they got it going a little bit in the second half to stay in the football game. These are always lessons learned from wins. This is another situation that we had some chances to close this thing out a little earlier than we did, but weren’t able to do it. We’ll look back and hopefully learn from this and be able to close some people out as we go forward.”

Broncos Win 4th Never Say Never Moment

December 2nd, 2011 - 11:27am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

For the third consecutive week — and fourth time this season — the Broncos’ late-game heroics have earned the team the GMC Never Say Never Moment of the Week.

Denver’s fourth-quarter, game-tying drive combined with the club’s game-winning drive in overtime against the San Diego Chargers earned the award for Week 12.

The team also took home the award after its 95-yard, game-winning drive against the Jets in Week 11, Tim Tebow’s 56-yard touchdown pass to Eric Decker late in a Week 10 win in Kansas City and another come-from-behind, overtime win in Miami in Week 7.

Elway Applauds Physical Play in San Diego

November 29th, 2011 - 4:27pm by Max HensonOther posts by

As the Broncos and Chargers played into overtime Sunday, the game became a battle of endurance.

And as the game wore on, the Broncos physical style both offensively in the run game and defensively with a furious pass-rush eventually pushed them past San Diego.

On ‘Elway Live’ today, Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway talked about that physical style of play that ultimately led to hard-fought victory.

“Anytime that our guys now feel like we’re in the game,” Elway said, “they are going to outlast the other team because of the physical nature we play with on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.”

“We outlasted them.”

Fans Have Plenty to Celebrate

November 29th, 2011 - 7:53am by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

The 2011 holiday season is giving the vast multitudes of Denver Broncos plenty to celebrate as the team is far ahead of the dismal preseason predictions of pro football pundits.

This is not written as criticism of what seemed at the time to be logical projection, but serves once again as a reminder that all preseason predictions are predicated on the previous year’s performance.

New year, new leadership and coaching, new results. Or maybe, we should say, new half year.

For all the dramatic developments the Broncos have made this year have come since the team was 1-4, a time frame when Head Coach John Fox acknowledged that he and the coaching staff was stilling getting to know the team. Looks like the “getting to know you” phase is moving along very well.

Broncos at Chargers: Key Plays

November 27th, 2011 - 10:50pm by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

First-and-10 from the San Diego 29 (2:19, 2nd quarter): Elvis Dumervil sacked Rivers for a 13-yard loss that got the Chargers’ two-minute drive started in the wrong direction. Even after San Diego picked up 15 yards from a personal foul on the next play, the offense couldn’t get any momentum on the possession, resulting in a punt with 1:43 that gave the ball back to the Broncos for a scoring drive before halftime.

Second-and-7 from the San Diego 43 (1:21, 2nd quarter): After making a 19-yard catch over the middle, tight end Daniel Fells fumbled the football. Tackle Orlando Franklin hustled down the field on the play and was there to fall on the loose ball, maintaining the drive, which would result in an 18-yard touchdown pass from Tebow to Eric Decker two plays later.

Third-and-5 from the San Diego 42 (3:03, 3rd quarter): Tebow and Matthew Willis connected on a key third down, picking up 14 yards on the play, which moved Denver into field goal range. Prater would connect from 41 yards out to cut the Chargers’ lead to 13-10.

Broncos at Chargers: Quotables

November 27th, 2011 - 10:12pm by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

Head Coach John Fox

On the success of the running the option with Tebow
“Part of coaching is putting your players in the best position to take advantage of their abilities. Timmy’s got outstanding abilities. He proved it at a high level of college football in the SEC at the University of Florida. It’s something that he’s comfortable with. I think our team’s adapted to it and right now I think it’s working in the run portion of our offense but he’s still got some growth to do in the pass portion. We work on it every day and we’re taking baby steps, but we’ll get there.”

On the defense
“I think the style, formula that we’re using helps the defense. But there’s no doubt they’ve gelled, they’re playing with a lot more swagger and confidence. There weren’t a lot of turnovers in the game today. I think it was played that way from both sides. It was that type of game. A tribute to those guys in that locker room. They didn’t blink they just kept going.”

On Von Miller
“He’s very gifted. That’s hopefully what happens when you take a player with the second pick in the NFL Draft, apart from all that, he’s an outstanding young man. He’s got a lot of God-given abilities no doubt. I think he’s getting better each week and he’s definitely somebody to deal with.”
