Panthers Prep for Peyton

November 7th, 2012 - 3:44pm by Sam DavisOther posts by

A strength for the Carolina Panthers in 2012 has been their defensive front four. On Sunday at Bank of America Stadium, Panthers Head Coach Ron Rivera will look for a continued push on the inside of the defensive line, hoping to be the first team to sack quarterback Peyton Manning in more than a month.

“Last year we didn’t have that inside push,” Rivera said in a conference call Wednesday. “This year, we do. I think the guys that are rushing for us on the inside have been outstanding. I think (DT) Dwan Edwards and (DT) Ron Edwards give us two stout bodies that can push the pocket and not allow the quarterback to step up. If the quarterback can’t step up, he can’t avoid that hard outside rush we’re getting on the edge.”

The outside rush that Rivera speaks of mainly consists of defensive ends Charles Johnson and Greg Hardy, who have combined for 14 sacks in 2012. As a team, the Panthers’ 24 sacks — one more than Cincinnati had coming into last week’s game — puts them in a tie for seventh in the NFL.

Behind the defensive line is rookie linebacker Luke Kuechly, one of the front-runners for the Defensive Rookie of the Year Award. The former Boston College Eagle and ninth overall draft pick ranks third in the NFL with 77 tackles, and leads all Panthers in that category by 25.

Fox Preparing for Return to Carolina

November 5th, 2012 - 3:14pm by Tyler EverettOther posts by

The 5-3 Broncos kick off the second half of their season in a familiar place for Head Coach John Fox.

This Sunday, the team travels to Carolina – where Fox was head coach from 2002 to 2010 – to take on the 2-6 Panthers in Week 10.
“I have a lot of great relationships there,” Fox said. “It was the place that gave me my first opportunity as a head coach, so I’ll always be indebted for that. I still own a home there. Some of my sons live that way, so it will be good to be back. But it’s, again, the NFL and this game’s only fun when you’re winning.”

During his nine seasons at the helm in Carolina, he led the team to 73 regular-season wins and three playoff appearances, including a trip to Super Bowl XXXVIII after the 2003 season and an appearance in the 2005 NFC Championship game. But fond memories aside, Fox said Sunday’s game is just like any other.

Fox said he won’t let his Carolina connection have an affect on preparations for Sunday’s game as the Broncos look for their fourth consecutive victory.

“It’s the most important game because it’s the next one,” Fox said. “You don’t get but 16 of these opportunities, and right now we’re 5-3. The only guarantee we have is 5-11. It’ll be just like any week, from the standpoint it’s the Denver Broncos versus the Carolina Panthers at their place. That’s the only real thing I know. How well we prepare will determine some of that outcome.”

Broncos vs. Jets: Quotables

November 18th, 2011 - 1:33am by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

BRONCOS HEAD COACH JOHN FOX

On the win
“I just thank the good Lord for those players in that locker room. They keep battling, and that’s why they call it a team effort. We had some struggles in some phases of our game. They’ve done it really three out of the last five weeks where they found a way in the fourth quarter to win the game. I guess that’s why they call it a team game.”

On the last drive
“We went to two minute, and we went to a formation that we felt pretty good about that in another way utilizes [QB] Tim [Tebow]’s abilities. I think it was evidence with that last touchdown.”

On the defense
“They gave us an opportunity, and they’ve done it before all the way back against Cincinnati at the beginning of the season. [CB André Goodman] Goody’s interception for a touchdown, pick-six, was big. The kicking game was involved. We made all of our attempts. Again, it’s a game of points, and we’re thankful we ended up with more points in the end.”

Just Win!!!

It’s funny to listen to broadcasters and the highlight commentators talk about the lack of passing after the game, etc. As a former O-lineman it was a dream game. “Ground and Pound” away and dominate the line of scrimmage. Mix it up, trap, option, toss, keep them off pace and then toss a few passes to keep them from crowding the line of scrimmage too much. Let’s catch a few of those fellas off guard and make it even more complex to read.

Inside the Numbers

November 14th, 2011 - 12:48pm by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

3
The Broncos posted their league-best third game with at least 195 rushing yards. The club has topped the 200-yard rushing mark in back-to-back games and have run for 195 or more in their last three.

6
Quarterback Tim Tebow posted his sixth career game with both a rushing and passing touchdown. Those six games rank second in the NFL (behind Michael Vick’s 7) since Tebow entered the league in 2010. With his 7-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, he passed Jake Plummer for the second-most rushing touchdowns (8) by a quarterback in franchise history. John Elway leads that category with 33 rushing touchdowns.

7
Eric Decker caught his seventh touchdown pass of the season to help put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter against the Chiefs. His seven receiving touchdowns rank second in the AFC and third in the NFL.

PREGAME:

We’re here at Arrowhead Stadium on this beautiful Sunday morning getting ready for the Broncos game against the Chiefs, which kicks off at 11:00 a.m. MST.

Some of the players have taken the field, stretching and preparing for the game. Kicker Matt Prater is warming up his leg by kicking field goals, and punter Britton Colquitt just spent some time with his brother Dustin, who plays the same position for the Chiefs.

COIN TOSS: Tight End Daniel Fells is the game captain for the Broncos as he joins the Broncos’ five season-long captains for the coin toss, with Britton Colquitt standing in for the injured Wesley Woodyard as the special teams captain. The Broncos won the toss calling tails and deferred their choice to the second half. Kansas City will receive.

MILLER CONTINUES HIS STRONG CAMPAIGN: Linebacker Von Miller sacked Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel on the first series of the game. It was his 7.5 sack of the season.

Chiefs Come Back Onto the Field

November 13th, 2011 - 3:00pm by Kenny LeganOther posts by

The Chiefs are coming onto the field as Tyler Palko replaces Matt Cassel with 1:55 remaining in the game.

The Broncos defense has been sturdy since letting up a touchdown on the first possession of the second half. They’ve forced Kansas City into two consecutive turnover-on-downs, the most recent one of which ended with a Elvis Dumervil and Von Miller sack on Matt Cassel to give Denver the ball at the Chiefs 18-yard line. The sack was Denver’s fourth of the game.
