Leadership On Multiple Fronts

When asked about the qualities Vonnie Holliday brings to the Broncos, defensive coordinator Mike Nolan quickly labeled three things — maturity, experience, and an appreciation for what it takes to win.

Those qualities are an extension of Holliday’s work ethic over his 12 pro seasons. Recovering from a knee injury this summer arguably made the 2009 offseason his hardest.

The adversity only encouraged Holliday to find a path that landed him on Denver’s roster.

“I don’t encourage people not to go to training camp, but this year just taking that offseason off — no OTAs, mini camps, all those things — definitely saved my joints as a 12th-year guy,” Holliday said. “Coming into the season the freshest, the healthiest I’ve felt in a long time.”

Flipping the Switch

Before the season, Head Coach Josh McDaniels and the coaching staff had a decision to make. Should the Broncos enter the season a 4-3 team, like they had been in 2008 and for many years before that, or make a switch to the 3-4 defense.

The way McDaniels saw it, the choice was simple. The Broncos didn’t have the pieces for a successful 4-3 defense this season.

“The way that they had played (in 2008), the style and the guys, we just felt like it wasn’t like we had a solid 4-3 defensive scheme in terms of our personnel to fit that scheme,” McDaniels said. “In other words, why take a year and (transition gradually) when it really wasn’t in place to begin with?”

So the transition began immediately, and players from Andra Davis to Robert Ayers to Vonnie Holliday were brought in for the way they fit the new 3-4 scheme.

The early verdict? The choice has paid off in spades.

Ready and Able

Vonnie Holliday, who signed with the Broncos on Saturday, met with members of the media Thursday morning from inside the Broncos’ locker room, and the 12-year veteran addressed a number of topics.

First, Holliday explained the lengthy process that ended with him arriving in Dove Valley.

“I’d been in touch throughout the whole offseason (with Denver), ever since I was let go down in Miami, I’ve been in contact,” Holliday said. “I had a surgery in my knee back in the early part of January. I got a knee clean-up, so it’s just been a long process, and they just wanted to make sure I was healthy before coming in here.”

Now healthy, the 33-year-old is busy playing catch-up at team headquarters. Holliday said it was unfortunate he had to miss training camp due to injury, but — after a few days of work at the high altitude — said he feels like he is in good football shape.
