Multiple Tuesday Transactions

September 11th, 2012 - 12:52pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

On Tuesday, the Broncos placed defensive tackle Ty Warren on injured reserve with a triceps injury and waived offensive lineman C.J. Davis.

The club filled those roster spots by re-signing quarterback Caleb Hanie and adding a veteran presence on the offensive line, signing center Dan Koppen.

The team also dropped offensive lineman Wayne Tribue from the practice squad.

Koppen — a 10th-year lineman — won two Super Bowls with the New England Patriots, where he spent the first nine years of his career.

The former fifth-round pick missed all but one game in 2011 after being placed on injured reserve. In his career, Koppen has started 120 of 121 games played, earning a Pro Bowl berth and second-team All-Pro honors in 2007.

Hanie was released last Saturday before the Broncos opened the season against Pittsburgh, in a move that Head Coach John Fox called “procedural,” in order to provide “some flexibility moving forward.”

The fifth-year quarterback completed 22 of his 39 passes during the preseason for 246 yards, a touchdown and an interception. He was originally signed as a free agent on March 25.

Warren Re-Injures Triceps; Team to Re-Sign Hanie

The day after the team’s season-opening win against Pittsburgh, the Broncos received some unfortunate news.

Defensive tackle Ty Warren, who spent the 2011 season on injured reserve with an injured triceps, re-tore the same triceps on Sunday.

“I’ll keep you abreast of what we do moving forward,” Head Coach John Fox told the media. “I haven’t even talked to Ty yet. I’m sure he’s very disappointed.”

Defensive line is a position that the Broncos addressed prior to the start of the season, signing Justin Bannan in free agency and picking up Derek Wolfe and Malik Jackson in the 2012 NFL Draft. Kevin Vickerson returned to health, as well.

“One of the things that’s helpful this offseason is that we’ve been able to add depth to that position,” Fox said. “Obviously we don’t want to lose a player like Ty for a significant amount of time, and this obviously will be, but we’ll adjust and, ‘Next man up.’”

Fox said no decision has been made in terms of Warren’s roster status after the injury.

“We’ll keep you posted,” he said.

In other roster moves, Fox said the team will re-sign quarterback Caleb Hanie, who was released on Saturday.

“That was procedural on Caleb, so we’ll re-sign him,” Fox said.

Salaries of vested veterans — like Hanie — are guaranteed the rest of the season if they are on the roster for Week 1 games. Hanie was released on Saturday prior to the team’s Week 1 game against Pittsburgh.

“That was procedural so we could have some flexibility moving forward as far as a vested veteran,” Fox explained.

Broncos, Warren Agree on Restructured Contract

June 6th, 2012 - 1:23pm by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. – Defensive tackle Ty Warren agreed to a restructured contract, the team announced on Wednesday. The 10th-year player participated in the Broncos’ OTA practice earlier this morning.

“Ultimately we met in a middle ground and got the deal done,” Warren said.

Warren, who was signed by Denver prior to the 2011 season, was injured during training camp and spent the 2011 season on injured reserve.

“It definitely was a blow,” Warren said about missing the season. “I had every intention to come in, earn my spot and make an impact.”

He spent the first eight years of his career with the Patriots, where he earned a pair of Super Bowl wins and a Pro Bowl selection (2007). Warren has totaled 374 tackles, 21 sacks, four forced fumbles and six fumble recoveries in 105 career games (92 starts).

Quick Hits from Elway

April 23rd, 2012 - 4:29pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

On Monday, Executive Vice President of Football Operations met the media on the same day Brian Dawkins announced his retirement.

In addition to the coverage already on DenverBroncos.com, we thought we’d highlight a few more key quotes from Elway’s press session.

On Brian Dawkins’ retirement:
“For a guy like that, it’s always tough to make that final decision, take that final step, but he’s obviously had a great career. He called [Head Coach] John Fox this morning. I did not talk to Brian, but the career that he’s had for 16 years—[three] years here in Denver and [13] in Philadelphia—he had a tremendous career. I’m sure he took the time that he wanted to take since the season was over. In that situation, it always does take that kind of time. I’m sure that he went through it many, many times. It’s always tough to take that final step. He’ll be missed. He did so many tremendous things for the Broncos, not only on the field, but his leadership off the field was something that we’ll always be grateful for.”

“We left it up to him. We were going to let him make that decision. Obviously, we would like to have had him back, but it was going to be his decision, and we told him to take his time, because when you make career decisions like that, they do take that time. He did take his time and, obviously, came with the decision that he felt was best for him and his family.“

Broncos Activate Jeremiah Johnson

The Denver Broncos activated running back Jeremiah Johnson to the 53-man roster Saturday.

To make room for him, Denver placed defensive tackle Ty Warren on injured reserve.

Johnson, a second-year player out of Oregon, spent all of training camp with the Broncos before the team signed him to the practice squad earlier this month. He had 16 carries in the preseason for 64 yards and one touchdown as well as two catches for 23 yards.
