Henry Sits Out; Bailey Limited

October 24th, 2007 - 5:02pm by AndrewOther posts by

Post-practice update:

Running back Travis Henry did not take part in Wednesday’s session because of bruised ribs. “Travis is a little sore right now,” Head Coach Mike Shanahan said.

Cornerback Champ Bailey was in uniform Wednesday, but his participation was limited. Bailey sat out last Sunday’s game against Pittsburgh and missed all of the practices on the Wednesday and Thursday leading up to the game and was limited on Friday.

Fellow cornerback Dre’ Bly, however, took part in the full day’s work.

“For the most part, I’m fine. I’m rehabbing it, and I’ll be fine for Monday night,” he said.

Bly said his rehabilitation work entails “just doing flexibility movements and continuing to ice it and doing stretches and stuff like that. For the most part, it’s just keeping it protected until the game. I can’t afford to fall on it or anything like that. (I’ll) keep it secure throughout the week and then play football on Monday.”

Tight end Tony Scheffler, who hobbled off the field with a lower leg injury Sunday night, also fully participated in the practice Wednesday. The same was true for safety Hamza Abdullah, who has been sidelined for over a month with a hip injury.

Defensive tackle Sam Adams, as is custom, did not take part in the Wednesday session.

The exact status for each player — probable, questionable, doubtful or out — will be determined after Friday’s session. The Green Bay Packers did not practice Wednesday and are on a Thursday/Friday/Saturday schedule, so there’ll be no reports on the status of their players until Thursday.

Thursday Injury Notes: Walker Still Out

October 4th, 2007 - 5:45pm by AndrewOther posts by

For a second consecutive day, neither Travis Henry nor Javon Walker practiced as they Broncos continued their preparation for Sunday’s game against the San Diego Chargers.

There was good news for the Broncos as several players went from limited participation in Wednesday’s session to full participation Thursday — running back Mike Bell, kicker Jason Elam, offensive tackle Ryan Harris, safety John Lynch and wide receiver Brandon Stokley.

Fullback Paul Smith, on the other hand, did not take part on Thursday as he grapples with a neck problem; he saw limited action Wednesday. Tight end Stephen Alexander (calf) and defensive end John Engelberger (shoulder) each saw limited work both Wednesday and Thursday.

Defensive tackle Sam Adams returned to practice Thursday after sitting out Wednesday’s session, as is custom this year.

In San Diego, a slew of players did not practice Thursday: wide receiver Eric Parker, fullback Andrew Pinnock, wide receiver Buster Davis, defensive tackle Jamal Williams, cornerback Antonio Cromartie, tight end Antonio Gates and linebacker Carlos Polk.

Injury Update: Lynch Back at Practice

October 3rd, 2007 - 5:48pm by AndrewOther posts by

UPDATED 5:48 P.M. MDT

While Travis Henry did not take part in Wednesday’s practice to rest his aching knee and ankle, safety John Lynch practiced and declared himself ready to play against his hometown team Sunday.

“He’s back,” Lynch said, smiling, as he paused before heading into the locker room following the two-and-a-quarter-hour session at Broncos headquarters.

Lynch was listed on the official injury report as having “limited participation,” but left the field satisfied with his day of work.

“I was very pleased,” Lynch added. “I also did a little on Friday, but I came out here, practiced a complete practice and felt good. I’m excited.”

In looking back, Lynch understood why the coaches opted to shelve him at Indianapolis, even though he chafed on the sideline watching Colts runners carve the Broncos defense for 226 rushing yards — the most permitted by the Broncos in a game since Dec. 28, 2003.

“(Sitting out) was probably the smart thing,” Lynch said. “It’s the last thing you want to do, but that’s what makes Mike (Shanahan) a successful coach. He knew that would be a hard decision for me, so he made the decision himself.

“I didn’t necessarily like it, but in retrospect it was the right thing to do, and I feel good.”

In addition to Henry, three other players did not practice on Wednesday: defensive tackle Sam Adams, safety Hamza Abdullah and wide receiver Javon Walker. Adams has not practiced on Wednesdays all year and his absence was listed as a “team decision,” as it has the past four weeks. Abdullah has been ruled out with a hip injury, while Walker missed the session as he continues to grapple with the right-knee inflammation that sideliend him last week.

Another Close Call

September 17th, 2007 - 1:47am by mike_riceOther posts by

It is an enviable position for an NFL team to be in: Win while not playing its best. That’s where the Broncos find themselves after two games of the 2007 season.

Sunday’s overtime win over the Raiders was the Broncos’ second consecutive nail-biter. The bottom line is that the Broncos are 2-0 and they are not playing nearly to the level at which they are capable of playing.

The Broncos have plenty on which to work after beating the Raiders. A few of the items:

  • They surrendered 200 net yards rushing. The Raiders couldn’t throw the football, finishing with 53 net yards passing. But the Broncos could hardly stop Oakland’s running game. It was just too easy.
  • For the second straight week, the Broncos’ offense marched up and down the field. But for the second straight week, they struggled to score points. The Broncos racked up 441 yards but they still had to rally to win.
  • The Broncos’ special teams has to tighten things up. The onside kick the Raiders recovered seemed to give them new life. Even though Oakland didn’t score on the ensuing possession, the Raiders seemed to be energized by taking the Broncos by surprise.

It’s All About the Bottom Line

September 9th, 2007 - 10:34pm by mike_riceOther posts by

The Broncos’ 15-14 win over the Bills on Sunday was one of those games where it takes a little time sink in. After the excitement wears off, one is left to ask something along the lines of, “Did they REALLY just do what I think they did?”

It also shows that it doesn’t really matter how a team wins. The bottom line is the most important thing. The Broncos’ bottom line on Sunday against the Bills was a “W.” That’s all that counts.

I know it didn’t look pretty. The Broncos had plenty of opportunities to pile up the points. They outgained the Bills 470 yards to 184. The Broncos had a 171-112 yard edge in rushing yards. They held the Bills to 72 net yards passing.

And yet, the Broncos still found themselves scrambling to pull out an improbable victory on kicker Jason Elam’s 42-yard field goal as time expired.

Henry, Hall, Bell Back in Uniform

August 27th, 2007 - 2:40pm by AndrewOther posts by

Easily the most encouraging sign for the Broncos at their practice Monday afternoon was the presence of a full corps at running back, with Travis Henry, Mike Bell and Andre Hall each returning to uniform.

None of the tailbacks practiced last week, and Hall has missed the last two weeks — plus the final two sessions of training camp — with a right-hamstring injury. While all three were on the field Monday, Henry will not play Thursday night, as Head Coach Mike Shanahan confirmed Monday that he will hold the starters out of the preseason finale with Arizona, just as he has in other preseason-closing games the last six years.

Henry, however, doesn’t believe he needs another game to work back into speed.

“I think this week alone should get me ready for the opener,” he said. “I think this is a big week for me. I’ll get a chance to run with the scout team and get my legs under me and by next week I should be ready to go.”

Cedric Cobbs: Back for One More Go

August 21st, 2007 - 5:02pm by AndrewOther posts by

Well, I don’t think this will spawn as many comments as yesterday’s entry …

Cedric Cobbs

I scanned the east field at Dove Valley on Tuesday afternoon, taking a mental roll call of who was and was not taking part in the Broncos’ on-field session. I started with the running backs and fullbacks.

Selvin Young … check.

Cecil Sapp … check.

Kyle Johnson … check, back after missing Monday’s practice.

Travis Henry … still out.

Mike Bell … still out.

Andre Hall … still out.

Troy Fleming … check.

Paul Smith … check.

After those names had been accounted for, I squinted into the sunlight. Who’s this guy in jersey No. 33? It didn’t seem as though Thump Belton had returned after being released just under a month ago; the guy wearing the number this time was slimmer.

Ekuban Tears Achilles; Henry to Undergo MRI

August 18th, 2007 - 11:53pm by AndrewOther posts by

A bad night for the Broncos turned worse with the news that defensive end Ebenezer Ekuban will likely miss the rest of the 2007 season because of a torn Achilles tendon.

Ekuban suffered the injury midway through the second quarter.

Running back Travis Henry also suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee. He will undergo an MRI examination back in Denver. If it comes back negative, Head Coach Mike Shanahan said that Henry could return to game action as early as next week.

Needless to say, Ekuban’s teammates were saddened by the injury. Here’s a sampling of their thoughts from the locker room:

JOHN LYNCH:
“Eb’s a warrior. He goes out there every week and gives his heart. He played at a high level … It seemed like his legs had come underneath him this year. When he came here, it looked like his knee was still bothering him, but now, his legs were great. He was playing outside and inside. He was going to be a key contributor. We’ve certainly hit some adversity with the way we’ve played, with some key guys (injured). Every team goes through that at some point. We’ll see how we respond.”

NICK FERGUSON:
“Oh, man. … I know he was looking forward to the season and doing something with this scheme. To have a guy like him go down and lose him for the remainder of the season is difficult, but at the same time it could have happened to any of us, so (it’s a chance) for all of these guys who are drafted to come in play.”

CHAMP BAILEY:
“Oh, you hate to hear that. A guy that we definitely depended on up front and now it’s just time for guys to step up. He’s a veteran, he’s leader on our team, and we’re going to miss him.  But with all that said, we’ve got to keep playing football and hopefully some of these young guys will step up.”

DRE’ BLY:
“Eb was one of the sack leaders last year leading the team in sacks. Personally, we were college mates, we came into college together and came out together, so I’m going to be disappointed because I was looking forward to playing with Eb and reuniting with him, but that’s part of the game. Guys have to step up. Injuries are something that we have to deal with. That just gives an opportunity for one of the younger guys to step up in his place and try to fill the void.”

Home From San Francisco, Now We’re Off to Dallas

August 14th, 2007 - 11:24am by domonique_foxworthOther posts by

First, I just want to acknowledge the soldiers that have responded to the blog and let them know that our prayers are with them and we all appreciate what they are doing in all parts of the world.

It’s pretty cool to have the blog and the Internet. I guess I kind of make myself sound old, but I’m still amazed by the Internet sometimes and the fact that people can check out my blog from places like Japan and then respond to it. But anyway, just wanted to let them know that I read their responses and I appreciate their support and definitely know that we’re behind them.

Right now it’s probably going to be a rocky blog because I’m extremely tired. We had quite a last couple hours. We played the game in San Francisco and were able to win, which is always good, and did some promising things, and we left from there to the airport and got back to Denver at about 1:30, and I got back to my house around 2:30.

Then I unpacked my suitcase and repacked it for the next day’s trip, and now I’m here doing the blog at about 9-ish, because we have meetings coming up at 11, and from there we’re going to head to Dallas for a week and play them this coming Saturday.

The Reign of King Henry

August 7th, 2007 - 1:01am by mike_riceOther posts by

New Broncos running back Travis Henry doesn’t look all that imposing. He’s 5’ 9” tall and weighs 230 pounds. But he rules the roost of Denver rushers.

Henry has had a great start to training camp and the initial reports are more than positive. Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler loves having Henry in his backfield.

“I’m probably more excited about him than anybody else,” Cutler said after Monday morning’s practice.

“The way he’s hitting holes and how he’s reading blocks and getting downhill…we’re throwing some new protections at him and he’s able to pick up all that stuff and get out and catch the ball.”

Cutler makes it sound like Superman just changed the color of his tights to orange and blue.
