Fans in Record Numbers Head to Dove Valley

August 18th, 2011 - 5:14pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

We knew there was a lot of fan interest at this year’s training camp. Turns out it was a record.

This year’s attendance set a Dove Valley record, as an average of 1,597 fans came to each practice.

A total of 27,142 people came to watch practices at the team’s headquarters, and an additional 17,982 fans attended the team’s Summer Scrimmage at Sports Authority Field on Aug. 6. That represents the second-highest total ever for a Broncos training camp practice, and brought the final tally to 45,124 fans.

So, we’d like to thank you all for coming out — and even if you couldn’t, thanks for sticking with the blog and other stories on DenverBroncos.com for updates throughout.

As John Elway just said on Twitter, “Thanks to our GREAT fans for their support during camp. You guys came out in record numbers to watch, and we appreciate you!”

Wednesday’s practice was filled with the typical assortment of big plays, but there were also some “dings” in practice that Head Coach John Fox addressed after the session.

    ROLL CALL
Ryan Clady (knee irritation), Brian Dawkins (ankle irritation) and Brandon Lloyd (knee irritation) did not finish practice, though Fox said that was just precautionary. “Nothing serious,” he said.

In addition, Ty Warren, Marcus Thomas, Demaryius Thomas, Richard Quinn, Stanley Daniels and Ronnell Brown (ankle sprain) did not participate in practice.

    WHAT’S THE SCENARIO
In the final team drills of practice, the players worked through two end-of-game scenarios. In the first, the offense was down, 25-20, with 1:40 left on the clock and the ball at its own 40-yard line.

The Broncos hit the practice field Monday after a day off Sunday to start the last week of training camp, and the weather wasn’t the only thing that was hot. Tensions and intensity rose as everyone was trying to raise their play. There were some spectacular plays, including arguably the play of training camp — which will be in Broncos TV’s highlight package — so without further ado, let’s get to it.

    ROLL CALL
Receiver Eddie Royal was back practicing 100 percent. Royal had missed all or part of the last few padded practices with a hip injury. Cornerback Syd’Quan Thompson was still out with a injury. Tight end Richard Quinn and guard Stanley Daniels also sat out and defensive tackles Ty Warren and Marcus Thomas left practice with injuries.

Defensive tackle Louis Leonard was released and linebacker Derek Domino was waived earlier in the day, while receiver Greg Orton made his first practice appearance for the Broncos.

The Broncos picked up the pace in Saturday’s walkthrough practice.

The team worked on its hurry-up offense, forcing the players to jog to the line of scrimmage during the the early portion of the session.

Offensive Coordinator Mike McCoy was giving constant instruction to his offense, repeating the amount of timeouts left and a particular down-and-distance he wanted his unit to work through.

Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen emphasized communication as he sent various packages onto the field. The energetic coordinator was the only one on the field who got some actual running in as he sprinted to the huddle to give instructions.

    2011 Training Camp – Day 17: A.M. Blog

August 13th, 2011 - 12:26pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

Two days after their first preseason game, the Broncos were back on the field at Dove Valley Saturday morning for another padded practice.

Even though there haven’t been practices every day, we’re still calling this training camp day 17, because it’s the 17th day since it kicked off on July 28.

    Let’s get to the recap.

    ROLL CALL
Among the players not participating in the morning session were defensive linemen Brodrick Bunkley and Louis Leonard, both of whom watched their teammates run through drills from the sideline. Syd’Quan Thompson and Eddie Royal also did not participate. Head Coach John Fox said the team is being cautious with Royal’s hip — not the one that was operated on in the offseason.

    PLAYMAKERS

  • It looked like Champ Bailey was set to snag an interception, but Julius Thomas seemingly came out of nowhere to jump in front of the veteran cornerback for the catch, making sure the ball stayed with the offense.
  • Bailey got his revenge later in a red-zone drill, picking off a Brady Quinn pass in the end zone.
  • Not to be outdone by his fellow rookie tight end, Virgil Green soared to grab a ball over his head delivered by Tim Tebow for a touchdown in the back of the end zone.
  • Brandon Lloyd was active in the same red zone drill, reeling in two Kyle Orton passes for touchdowns in both corners of the end zone.
  • Eric Decker had a couple long runs after catches, one of which went for a touchdown. Afterward, he walked back to the huddle getting congratulated by Lloyd.
  • Willis McGahee took the first few carries during team drills, finding a hole on his first run. In a later team session in practice, he found a lot of space again due to a nice block by Spencer Larsen on Brian Dawkins.
  • Robert Ayers raced into the backfield on the first play of team drills, putting pressure on Orton.
  • D.J. Williams tipped away a pass in coverage during team drills.
