A.M. Blog: Day 11

August 5th, 2008 - 12:04pm by Adam ZinserOther posts by

After a record-setting streak of days with the temperature above 90 degrees, Tuesday morning brought a much welcomed cool front. When I heard over the radio on the way to Dove Valley that the high was predicted to be 82 degrees, I laughed.

Thankfully, they were right. The players (and I) enjoyed temperatures in the low 70s throughout the morning camp session. And now for quick hits from practice.

ATTENDANCE REPORT: Hamza Abdullah remained on the sideline, nursing his strained groin. Peyton Hillis, after making it back onto the field yesterday morning, sat out again. Chad Mustard and Tom Nalen remain out with a right hamstring and left knee, respectively. Montrae Holland continues to work on his own, though he later came out and watched from the sidelines. He looks slimmer to me.

Champ Bailey also missed practice with a sore right hamstring. Bailey spent his time watching from the sidelines with teammates or on the field talking with Head Coach Mike Shanahan. But don’t worry Broncos Country, Shanahan quickly pointed out that No. 24 is a quick healer.

P.M. Blog: Day 7

July 31st, 2008 - 5:55pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

On an afternoon that got started with a press conference announcing the departure of John Lynch, the Broncos headed to the practice fields for a jog-through session. The defense practiced against itself on one field while the offense ran through its plays on the other. Here are some quick hits.

ATTENDANCE REPORT: The out of pads list remained the same as this morning with one exception — Peyton Hillis, Chad Mustard and Tom Nalen all watched practice from the sidelines, but Michael Pittman was dressed out in his jersey…The usual suspects got the afternoon practice off — Champ Bailey, Ebenezer Ekuban, Darrell Jackson, Dewayne Robertson and Brandon Stokley — though they still watched from the sidelines.

POSTURING FOR POSITION: Mike Leach, Tony Scheffler and Josh Mallard took turns rotating in at the long snapper position during punting drills.

Graham, Gold Still Sidelined

Graham and Scheffler

Quick blog shots for a Thursday …

… As was the case a day earlier, neither linebacker Ian Gold nor tight end Daniel Graham saw action in the day’s practice session. Head Coach Mike Shanahan said after the two hours of midday work that Graham would be able to hit the field Friday.

“That’s our plan,” Shanahan said …

… Wide receiver Brandon Stokley suited up for the practice, but was limited in his on-field work for a second consecutive day …

… Strongside linebacker Nate Webster trotted onto the field in a blue No. 5 sweatshirt-style practice jersey. Newly signed placekicker Matt Prater wore his own white No. 5 jersey.

“Meaningless?” Not Exactly …

Team Huddle

I’m not going to remember exactly where I was when the Broncos were officially eliminated from postseason consideration on Sunday afternoon. Truth be told, I’m not even sure I recall it right now. I was in the midst of errands, dashing around the southern half of the Denver metropolitan area and finding out how the rest of the world spends its autumn and early-winter Sundays. I reckon, therefore, that I was somewhere along Yosemite Street near the sprawling Park Meadows shopping complex, or perhaps on Lincoln Ave. to the south.

But I had been listening to or watching the Chargers’ 51-14 rout of the Detroit Lions as I skedaddled from one stop to the next, so I’d long since reconciled myself to the fact that no Lions rally was going to happen. The game started before the last of the early duels had been completed and seemed to pass out of doubt’s purview somewhere about the time the Miami Dolphins posted their first game-winning score of the year.

Thus entails the overuse of the word “meaningless” in the next seven days, in television, in newspaper copy, in blogs, in message boards, in evening-time chatter over an egg-nog latte at Starbucks.

This notion has always rankled me.

Starting To Look Ahead

December 14th, 2007 - 10:12am by mike_riceOther posts by

I know there are two games left and the Broncos need to try to win them. But I’m taking a deep breath after the loss to Houston and starting to think about next year.

The Broncos aren’t mathematically eliminated from the playoffs but the way they are playing, and have played this year, they have showed they are not a playoff team.

But they have pieces in place that, to me, show they could be a playoff team again as early as next year.

Henry Sits Out; Bailey Limited

October 24th, 2007 - 5:02pm by AndrewOther posts by

Post-practice update:

Running back Travis Henry did not take part in Wednesday’s session because of bruised ribs. “Travis is a little sore right now,” Head Coach Mike Shanahan said.

Cornerback Champ Bailey was in uniform Wednesday, but his participation was limited. Bailey sat out last Sunday’s game against Pittsburgh and missed all of the practices on the Wednesday and Thursday leading up to the game and was limited on Friday.

Fellow cornerback Dre’ Bly, however, took part in the full day’s work.

“For the most part, I’m fine. I’m rehabbing it, and I’ll be fine for Monday night,” he said.

Bly said his rehabilitation work entails “just doing flexibility movements and continuing to ice it and doing stretches and stuff like that. For the most part, it’s just keeping it protected until the game. I can’t afford to fall on it or anything like that. (I’ll) keep it secure throughout the week and then play football on Monday.”

Tight end Tony Scheffler, who hobbled off the field with a lower leg injury Sunday night, also fully participated in the practice Wednesday. The same was true for safety Hamza Abdullah, who has been sidelined for over a month with a hip injury.

Defensive tackle Sam Adams, as is custom, did not take part in the Wednesday session.

The exact status for each player — probable, questionable, doubtful or out — will be determined after Friday’s session. The Green Bay Packers did not practice Wednesday and are on a Thursday/Friday/Saturday schedule, so there’ll be no reports on the status of their players until Thursday.

Tuesday Questions and Answers: Because I Love a Good Argument …

September 25th, 2007 - 4:24pm by AndrewOther posts by

Every Wednesday when Parliament is in session in London — and at other times in some other nations of the Commonwealth — noontime begins the Prime Minister’s Questions, when members of the House of Commons can query the nation’s leader about all matters, from the ones that are global in scope to more trivial and local concerns like signage along the M1.

Since Tuesday is the players’ day off here … and since this usually brings some time for me to answer questions … I’m going to bring that tradition over here to the blog. While I’ll answer as much as I can throughout the week in the comments section or on the pregame podcast — available Saturdays on DenverBroncos.com — whatever I can’t get to there, I’ll take here.

So keep your comments rolling on the blog posts, or e-mail me, as we begin another Tuesday question-and-answer session … which I will begin with the return of an old antagonist to our blog sanctum. I’m talking, of course, about LetPlummerPlay:

And since compelling drama requires antagonism … and since I love a good written scrum … I’m only too happy to dive in and respond to this individual:

Wow, it’s been a while since I stopped by old Andrew’s blog. After being reprimanded more than once by Mr. Mason, I just stuck to our infamous letplummerplay.com website.

Three words:

Let.

It.

Go.

Questions, Answers, Tight Ends, Rookies, Soccer … and Fox

September 18th, 2007 - 5:39pm by AndrewOther posts by

Bienvenidos from the basement-office bureau of DenverBroncos.com, where I find myself decamped in order to meet a deadline on a game-program feature for the Chargers game, compose my as-promised response to numerous blog comments and write another blog entry about this morning’s heavily-attended kickoff event at the Broncos Boys and Girls Club.

Which brings me to one of the stars of the morning, Domonique Foxworth, and his little blog-based salvo …

As for my Blog Master, it’s not no stinkin’ Andrew Mason. I’m in direct competition with Andrew Mason. My blog is consistently better than his blog. I get more attention and I give more quality insight, so I wouldn’t dare let Andrew Mason be the one who transcribes my blog.

Oh, Foxie, Foxie, Foxie (or is it “Foxy,” perhaps?) … where do I begin …

Better? Well, you have your moments, my friend. Your work is decent, but it would be nice if you actually wrote the thing instead of dictating it.

Having someone else transcribe … that’s poseur blogging. I know you’re better than that. I know you’ve got it in you. If Jack Nasty can write his stuff, so can you. No hiding behind a “Blog Master” over here, my friend; this blog here is all me … right down to the occasional late-night ramblings from the comfort of home.

But in general, I’ll give you a free pass on that one, Foxie. I’ve heard many worse insults tossed my way.

Seriously, I enjoy the blog. It’s a different perspective, one we haven’t seen too often in recent NFL annals.

Training Camp Day 9: Morning Report

August 7th, 2007 - 2:32pm by AndrewOther posts by

Tony Scheffler
The skies above Dove Valley were drab Tuesday morning, and Head Coach Mike Shanahan felt that the performance of his team was equally so after a two-and-a-quarter-hour session that he termed “below average.”

“The intensity is there. Guys are tired, but they’ve got to work through it,” Shanahan said. “That’s what football’s all about; that’s what training camp is all about.”

However, one welcome sight was the return of tight end Tony Scheffler to the practice field. His time in his No. 88 jersey, however, was limited, as he went through calisthenics and installation drills, running a few routes before retreating to rehabilitation work.

“We tried to work him through about a 30-minute period, trying to get him used to running some routes,” Shanahan said. “He’s still a ways away.”

Jarvis Moss remained sidelined following the Monday morning scare he experienced with his left knee; he was on the field throughout the practice walking smoothly with his knee wrapped in a bandage. Other injuries, however, shook up the Broncos’ alignment as practice wound forward.

JOHN LYNCH: The 15th-year safety left the field late in the session after suffering a slightly bruised sternum on a collision with Travis Henry. Hamza Abdullah took his place with the first unit for the final periods of the morning.

“I’m all right. I’ve just been banging into Travis a little bit too much,” Lynch said. “Usually I grind through it, but they pulled me out … I’ll just come back and be ready to go tomorrow.”

MATT LEPSIS: The offensive tackle suffered what Shanahan termed “a little bit of a groin pull” and was replaced on the first unit by Adam Meadows for the final 45 minutes of practice.

“I’m not sure how serious it is right now, but it’s enough to keep him out,” Shanahan said. Lepsis did stay on the sidelines after incurring the injury.

MIKE BELL: The third-team running back was walking around slowly after being hit during team drills midway through practice and did not see much playing time thereafter, although he remained on the field.

Training Camp Day 3: Afternoon Session

July 31st, 2007 - 9:07pm by AndrewOther posts by

Rod Smith
As the sun’s presence over Dove Valley began to fade late Tuesday afternoon, a ray of light shone upon the Broncos’ practice fields.

Two rays of light, actually — in the form of Rod Smith and Tony Scheffler running up and down the east practice field as their teammates finished off a post-practice dose of special-teams work.

Both, of course, remain on the physically-unable to perform list, but their jaunts represented tangible progress, and the first public sign of progress in their respective rehabilitation work.

Meanwhile, back on the field, the practice was as much defined by who wasn’t on the field as who was there.

NOTES FROM THE AFTERNOON:

ATTENDANCE REPORT: The shoulder injury Domenik Hixon incurred did indeed keep him out. “Hopefully he can go tomorrow or if not the next couple of days,” Head Coach Mike Shanahan said … Ian Gold’s back spasms sidelined him … Brandon Stokley and Adam Meadows both practiced after sitting out the morning session … Players who kept a one-a-day schedule and sat out Tuesday included cornerback Champ Bailey, safeties John Lynch and Nick Ferguson, offensive linemen Tom Nalen and Matt Lepsis, defensive end Ebenezer Ekuban, defensive tackle Sam Adams and tight end Stephen Alexander … Lamont Reid and Doug Nienhuis and the three players on the physically-unable-to-perform list also continued to sit out … Javon Walker was in uniform, but did not take part in the team segments of practice.
