Nalen, Lynch First-Year Nominees for Hall

September 27th, 2012 - 1:36pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

On Thursday, the Pro Football Hall of Fame announced the list of candidates for the Class of 2013, and two Broncos are among the first-year eligible modern-era candidates.

Center Tom Nalen and safety John Lynch are nominees in their first year of eligibility.

Lynch, a nine-time Pro Bowler, spent the first 11 years of his NFL career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before joining the Broncos as a free agent in 2004. He spent four seasons with Denver, capping off a career that featured 1,277 tackles, 13 sacks, 26 interceptions, 100 passes defensed, 16 forced fumbles and eight fumble recoveries.

Nalen started 188 of 194 games played in his career, and never committed more than six penalties in a season. He earned five Pro Bowl nominations — the most by an offensive lineman in Broncos history, and won back-to-back Super Bowls with the team.

The two first-year candidates join five fellow former Broncos — running back Terrell Davis, wide receiver Rod Smith, linebacker Karl Mecklenburg and safeties Steve Atwater and Dennis Smith — and a former Broncos coach, Dan Reeves, as nominees for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2013.

Late Selections as Vital as Early Ones

February 17th, 2011 - 12:14pm by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

Earlier I did a blog on the history of the Denver Broncos’ draft choices when the team has had a selection among the first 10 players in the entire draft.

There is no question that the potential for greatness is there where the choices are made, but it is very important that fans remember how significant late picks are in building a team as well, in addition to completely undrafted free agent players.

Let’s take a quick look at a number of very significant Broncos who were drafted either in the final round of the draft, or signed as an undrafted free agent player.

This will not even include the players like Terrell Davis and Shannon Sharpe, taken late but not at the end of the draft process.

Key Bronco players who were chosen in the final round of the draft and went on to have length NFL careers include:

Tebow, Quinn and Orton

May 20th, 2010 - 10:01pm by mark_cooperOther posts by

Have to give the guys credit where credit is due….true professionals and I appreciate seeing it. Each has a role to play and a role to compete for, and may the best man win. Don’t bother reading the papers as they’re on a roll to create as much controversy as they can between the players and it’s almost comical.

Big news of the day came out of Miami, with our buddy Brandon and another hip surgery….wow, interesting?? and I mean in the way we all know Brandon. I stopped by his site and it said he’d been overseas in Thailand and the islands over there…hmmmmm.

O.K. back to the fellas:

Broncos Considered Among Most Valuable

March 17th, 2010 - 9:22am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

Terrell Davis. Shannon Sharpe. Steve Atwater. Randy Gradishar. Tom Jackson. Karl Mecklenburg. Tom Nalen. Louis Wright. Lyle Alzado. Rick Upchurch.

They are some of the best players to ever don a Broncos uniform. None were picked higher than the 14th overall selection in the NFL draft, and one was picked as late as the 310th overall selection in the 12th round.

Not coincidentally, they are all up for consideration to be named one of the 75 Most Valuable Draft Picks in league history.

Fans can vote on NFL.com now — voting ends April 18 — choosing between pairs of players randomly generated from a list of 320 all-time most valuable draft picks as chosen by NFL.com editors. After choosing the winners of 30 random matchups, fans can begin to build their own Top 10 list, and continue voting from there to alter their top 10.

Nalen To Have Knee Scoped Again

August 20th, 2008 - 1:29pm by Jake GrilleyOther posts by

Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced after Wednesday’s practice that veteran center Tom Nalen will have his knee scoped on Thursday. Nalen underwent a similar procedure in the offseason.

“What we are going to do is have Tom get his knee cleaned up a little bit — more preventative than anything else,” Shanahan said. “It hasn’t healed the way we would have liked.”

Nalen was held out of much of training camp due to soreness in his left knee. Shanahan said he hopes after having this procedure that Nalen will be ready in time for the regular season.

“Hopefully it’s nothing serious and can alleviate some of the swelling and the pain and hopefully he is ready to go by the first game.”

Practice Quick Hits: 8/18

August 18th, 2008 - 4:08pm by Jake GrilleyOther posts by

With training camp coming to an end, the Broncos are entering regular season mode when it comes to practices. These practices are open to the media but photography is limited to the first 15 minutes. We will continue to provide you with all the highlights and pertinent information from these practices but in a slightly different and more concise format.

The Broncos hit the practice field on Monday for the first time since the team’s preseason win against the Cowboys. A morning walk through was held that was closed to the media, but here are some highlights from this afternoon’s session.

Boss Bailey, Hamza Abdullah, Darrell Jackson and Daniel Graham were all out of uniform watching practice from the sidelines.

However, some familiar faces were back on the field as Champ Bailey, Louis Green and Tom Nalen joined their teammates on the gridiron. Anthony Alridge was also back in action after being held out of Saturday’s contest against the Cowboys.

A.M. Blog: Day 14

August 8th, 2008 - 11:23am by Jake GrilleyOther posts by

The Broncos held a walk-through Friday morning in preparation for Saturday’s preseason opener at Houston.

ATTENDANCE REPORT: Champ Bailey, Hamza Abdullah, Dewayne Robertson and Tom Nalen were all out of uniform during the practice and Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced that they will all be out against the Texans. He also said that Dre’ Bly will be only out on the field in nickel coverage.

POSTURING FOR POSITION: Eddie Royal took reps with the first unit and will start at wide receiver opposite Brandon Marshall on Saturday.

TAKE AWAYS: Positional units practiced together going over formations and assignments. The team also had some 7-on-7 walk-through with the offense taking on the defense. To end practice the team went over which squads should be on the field at certain times. Shanahan would shout a unit for example “first unit field goal” and those 11 players would run on the field. Then he would tell certain players to go to the sideline and their backups would rush onto the field.

QUOTABLE:
“He would not be working with the starting unit unless he has proven to us that he is very consistent and he deserves that chance to start. For a guy to get that chance to start kind of gives you an idea of how hard he has been working and what he has done in practice.”

A.M. Blog: Day 13

TORAIN UPDATE: Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced after the morning session that running back Ryan Torain will need surgery to repair damage done to his elbow during practice on Wednesday. Torain broke the upper bone in his elbow and an MRI revealed ligament damage.

“We will see how the operation goes and see what the doctors say,” Shanahan said. “But it is obviously more serious that we first thought.”

Torain gives an update in his blog entry.

In preparation for Saturday’s preseason opener at Houston the Broncos held an abridged morning session without pads, similar to the team’s afternoon jog through sessions.

P.M. Blog: Day 12

August 6th, 2008 - 5:42pm by Adam ZinserOther posts by

Though the sun broke through for most of the afternoon practice, it was definitely much cooler than this morning’s session, and thankfully, the dark clouds heading this way held off just long enough for the team to wrap things up and head inside.

ATTENDANCE REPORT: Hamza Abdullah, Champ Bailey, Peyton Hillis, Chad Mustard, Tom Nalen and Dewayne Robertson all watched from the sidelines with their various injuries/soreness. Abdullah was doing some calisthenics with out on the field to help rehab his groin before practice began. One end of a large elastic band was wrapped around his waist with the other end tied to one of the goal posts. He high-stepped sideways until the band became fully extended and taught, then would move back towards the goal post.

A.M. Blog: Day 11

August 5th, 2008 - 12:04pm by Adam ZinserOther posts by

After a record-setting streak of days with the temperature above 90 degrees, Tuesday morning brought a much welcomed cool front. When I heard over the radio on the way to Dove Valley that the high was predicted to be 82 degrees, I laughed.

Thankfully, they were right. The players (and I) enjoyed temperatures in the low 70s throughout the morning camp session. And now for quick hits from practice.

ATTENDANCE REPORT: Hamza Abdullah remained on the sideline, nursing his strained groin. Peyton Hillis, after making it back onto the field yesterday morning, sat out again. Chad Mustard and Tom Nalen remain out with a right hamstring and left knee, respectively. Montrae Holland continues to work on his own, though he later came out and watched from the sidelines. He looks slimmer to me.

Champ Bailey also missed practice with a sore right hamstring. Bailey spent his time watching from the sidelines with teammates or on the field talking with Head Coach Mike Shanahan. But don’t worry Broncos Country, Shanahan quickly pointed out that No. 24 is a quick healer.
