A Familiar Foe for Leonhard

October 4th, 2012 - 4:48pm by Sam DavisOther posts by

Safety Jim Leonhard has spent six of his eight years in the AFC East, where he played the New England Patriots at least twice a year.

While he admits he hasn’t had much success against them, Leonhard has enough experience against the Pats to know the keys to defeating them.

“I always say, to beat Tom Brady, you have to hit him and you have to get there with four (defenders),” Leonhard said. “That’s easy to say but it’s not very easy to do. I think we have the guys up front that we can get it done and get him off his spot and get him moving a little bit. That’s what you have to do to have success against him.”

Pressuring Brady with just four – not five, six or seven – is important because of Brady’s ability to recognize a blitz and capitalize on the matchups that are created in the secondary when additional players rush the passer.

Foes On Field, Friends Off It

October 3rd, 2012 - 5:31pm by Sam DavisOther posts by

On the field, quarterbacks Tom Brady and Peyton Manning have a history.

Off the field, they have a friendship.

“It’s really grown over the years,” Brady said in a conference call Wednesday. “We’ve known each other for a long time. We talk about a lot of things. We’ve seen each other off the field quite a few times over the years. He’s always really been someone I look up to and admire — certainly the way he plays the game, but also the way he handles himself off the field.”

Eleven years and four days ago, the two shook hands at Foxboro Stadium for the first time. It was during warmups prior to the first start of Brady’s career when he approached the Colts’ signal caller.

Notebook: Hochstein Stepping Up

January 10th, 2012 - 5:14pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

In Sunday’s win against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the offensive line took pride in its performance.

Tim Tebow wasn’t sacked, the offense picked up 131 yards on the ground and the unit did it without one of its leaders.

“We miss Kup (Chris Kuper) terribly,” said Russ Hochstein, who took over Kuper’s right guard spot. “He was a phenomenal leader here and we miss him a lot. We wish (the injury) wouldn’t have happened, but I just have tried to step in and play the role that I’m supposed to and that’s to help out in situations like this. I’m just trying to play the best I can, trying to play mistake-free and help the guys out on both sides of me.”

Head Coach John Fox said Hochstein did “a great job” doing just that, and Willis McGahee agreed.

“Russ did an awesome job filling in for Kuper,” McGahee said Monday. “I don’t think there was really a dropoff even though Kuper is a big part of our offense.”

Part of that can be attributed to Hochstein’s experience.

Patriots Not Surprised to Face Broncos

January 10th, 2012 - 4:39pm by Max HensonOther posts by

When the New England Patriots were preparing to face a Broncos team riding a six-game win streak in Week 15, Head Coach Bill Belichick said he wasn’t surprised by the success Denver was having.

Many were surprised to see Denver upend the favored Steelers in the Wild Card round Sunday, but Belichick insisted he isn’t at all shocked to get a visit from the Broncos in the divisional round.

“When we played them out there, I said to a couple people after the game — a couple players of the Broncos and people on our staff coming back from the game — I wouldn’t be surprised to see them again,” Belichick said in a conference call today. “And I’m not.”
