NFL Extends Broadcast Television Agreements

December 14th, 2011 - 1:53pm by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

The National Football League has agreed to nine-year extensions of its Sunday broadcast television packages with CBS, FOX and NBC, Commissioner Roger Goodell announced today. The nine-year terms are the longest for NFL television agreements with over-the-air broadcast partners, surpassing the eight-year deals signed with CBS, FOX and ABC from 1998-2005. The extensions ensure that NFL games will be broadcast on free, over-the-air television through the 2022 season.

“These agreements underscore the NFL’s unique commitment to broadcast television that no other sport has,” Commissioner Goodell said. “The agreements would not have been possible without our new 10-year labor agreement and the players deserve great credit. Long-term labor peace is allowing the NFL to continue to grow and the biggest beneficiaries are the players and fans.”

Don’t Be Fooled by Critics of the Pro Bowl

The press has a very influential role in our society.  It presents the news, reports the news, and tells us what is going on in the world.

And sometimes it instructs us in what we are supposed to think and believe.  When it does that, it is counting on our cooperation in believing what it tells us, with the hope and confidence that we will not think for ourselves and form our own opinions.

Every year about this time I observe an example of this:  the Pro Bowl.

Last Sunday the NFL season ended entirely with the annual playing of the Pro Bowl, the NFL all-star game, which is about to end a 30-year run in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Presently there are discussions about whether or not to extend the contract in Hawaii, and while none of us knows what the result will be, one thing we do know is that the Pro Bowl remains very unpopular with the press, and very popular with the public.

I Can’t Get Away from Work …

This isn’t hard-core Broncos news. It isn’t even a warm and fuzzy Broncos story. It’s pretty much about me. So if you don’t want to read this slice of self-indulgence, that’s fine. Just go to another blog entry; there’s plenty of other tidbits around here.

OK …

Broncos-Raiders: Pregame Notes, The Sequel

October 15th, 2006 - 6:02pm by AndrewOther posts by

More pre-game notes …

  • Broncos inactives: Wide reciever Todd Devoe, safety Hamza Abdullah, running back Cedric Cobbs, linebacker Nate Webster, offensive linemen Chris Kuper and Adam Meadows, tight end Nate Jackson and newly acquired defensive end Kenny Peterson.
  • NBC’s Andrea Kremer is on the field wearing a red topcoat. I would impugn her, but as a former Floridian, I am a weather wimp, wearing a heavy leather jacket a couple of nights ago when it was in the upper 50s. The officiating crew, led by Jeff Triplette, is clad in shirtsleeves. Nevertheless, it is a gorgeous night in the Mile High City, made even more pleasant by the comparison to the rotten, damp conditions of six nights ago.
  • Steve Watson and Fred Biletnikoff shared a chat at the 43-yard-line. I wonder how many tips the two former Pro Bowlers could exchange?
  • Was it just a matter of time before someone pulled Pittsburgh’s Troy Polamalu down by his hair?
  • Maybe it’s just me, but the music that NBC uses coming in and out of breaks during Football Night in America sounds like the dramatic tune that the network’s news division uses for its special reports when it breaks into regularly-scheduled programming.

Tatum BellStats blather, injury updates, and other thoughts from a quiet Tuesday afternoon at Dove Valley:

Topic 1: Deceptive rankings:

The league rushing tables say that Broncos running back Tatum Bell ranks ninth in the league with 295 yards so far this season. But with the Broncos having their bye week early this year, their players will be at a little bit of a disadvantage when it comes to league rankings.

Right now, Buffalo’s Willis McGahee leads the league with 389 rushing yards. St. Louis’ Stephen Jackson is second with 367 yards, while Atlanta’s Warrick Dunn ranks third with 365. But if the statistics were based off yardage per game, none would be in the league’s top three, and Bell would be tied for second with Kansas City’s Larry Johnson at 98.3 yards per game.
