Broncos Win Coin Toss

December 2nd, 2012 - 2:06pm by Sam DavisOther posts by

Representing the team at midfield were the captains: quarterback Peyton Manning, defensive end Elvis Dumervil, cornerback Champ Bailey, linebacker Wesley Woodyard, guard Chris Kuper and the game captain, safety Mike Adams.

Denver won the toss and deferred its choice to the second half, so the Broncos started the game on defense.

The Broncos came out with four down lineman – defensive end Derek Wolfe, tackles Kevin Vickerson and Justin Bannan and Dumervil at the other end.

The starting linebackers were Von Miller, Keith Brooking and Woodyard.

In the secondary, Rahim Moore and Adams were the safeties with Bailey and Chris Harris at the corners.

Following the Buccaneers’ punt, the Denver offense came out on the field.

On the offensive line, Dan Koppen started at center, Kuper and Zane Beadles were the guards and Orlando Franklin and Ryan Clady were the tackles.

The Broncos came out with two tight ends, with Jacob Tamme in the slot and Joel Dreessen on the line of scrimmage. Eric Decker and Demaryius Thomas were out wide.

Manning was in shotgun with Knowshon Moreno next to him at running back.

All Eyes on the Bucs

November 30th, 2012 - 8:16am by Eric DeckerOther posts by

We know where we are in the standings, but you won’t hear us talking about it in the locker room. Our ultimate goal is to win one week at a time. Tampa Bay is a very tough team. They’ve got a good back in Doug Martin and an explosive offense. We’ve got to be able to play with them and make sure we don’t turn the ball over, because their defense is very good at creating turnovers. Right now our goal is to win this one, move forward and win the next, and hopefully position ourselves in a good spot where we want to be come playoff time.

In the Bucs secondary, Ronde Barber covers their youth. He’s a very smart player. He’s around the ball a lot and making plays. That’s something that’s going to be a challenge for us as receivers. We’ve got to make sure that we’re sound with our technique and we’re getting to the right spots for Peyton.

Like I said, turnovers determine games. We always talk about giving it away versus taking turnovers — if you’re always in the positive, you’ll have success. You’ll see more wins. That’s why our goal is to eliminate them on offense and make sure we get a few defensively.

One thing is it’s always nice to be home. I know we’ve got a stretch here, I think three of the last five are at home. So it’s nice to have that home field advantage, especially at this time of year when it’s so crucial to set yourself up for a playoff run.

Talk to you next week.

Bucs’ Barber Still Producing

November 29th, 2012 - 3:57pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

For as long as Broncos veterans Champ Bailey, Keith Brooking, Peyton Manning and Brandon Stokley have been doing it, Buccaneers safety Ronde Barber has been doing it longer.

In his 16th season, Barber has a longer NFL tenure than anyone on the Broncos roster and is still producing.

This year, however, the longtime cornerback has moved to safety.

“It doesn’t matter where he’s playing, whether he’s playing corner, whether he’s playing nickel, whether he’s playing back there for safety — he’s a good football player,” Offensive Coordinator Mike McCoy said. “You love to watch him play. You have to be careful playing against him because he’s going to do some things that other players can’t do. He’s been around a lot and he’s a great football player.”

This season, Barber has already snared four interceptions — his most since 2008 — 12 passes defensed, a sack, a forced fumble and a defensive touchdown, making him a player the Broncos offense will need to keep tabs on throughout Sunday’s contest.

Head Coach John Fox saw that type of production from Barber twice a year when he coached the division-rival Carolina Panthers.

Bucs Believe in Freeman

November 28th, 2012 - 2:01pm by Sam DavisOther posts by

In his fourth year in the league, Tampa Bay quarterback Josh Freeman has made tremendous strides as a player and as a leader. The team’s performance of late is a reflection of Freeman’s success.

In 2011, Freeman threw 16 touchdowns and 22 interceptions as the Bucs struggled to a 4-12 record and a last place finish in their division.

For Freeman and Tampa Bay, things have changed in 2012. Through Week 12, the fourth-year quarterback has thrown 21 touchdowns to just seven interceptions for a passer rating of 94.3. Only five other quarterbacks in the league have a touchdown-to-interception ratio of three-to-one or better. Four of them are Super Bowl Champions and the fifth is rookie Robert Griffin III.

But it’s not just his on-field performance that has helped Tampa Bay climb into the playoff race with four wins in the club’s last five games. Rookie running back Doug Martin said that Freeman has exemplified the leadership of a player with more than four years under his belt.

Costly Win versus Buccaneers, 4-1

October 6th, 2008 - 9:23am by mark_cooperOther posts by

Costly game with Scheffler and Royal banged up. We’ll get to that later.

The funniest play of the day was the Marcus Thomas interception. He dropped back into coverage from the inside rush position and intercepted the ball then proceeded to look like a stalled pick-up truck in a parking lot. A lot of shake and bake, juking like jello and trying to pull his leg out of the mud and then coughing it up. I’d have loved to seen his face when the ball came out and the Bucs recovered.

The defense had flashes of brilliance and at times played as well as I’ve seen them play all year. (Blogger)-Monodono, you may have hit it on the head last week with your comments about the Defense finding their identity. And Yardo, you’re always on top of it!! 3 sacks and 1 interception!!

If you didn’t know, it was Alumni weekend and I had a great time at the game as my two former teams played each other with the added benefit of seeing a bunch of the guys I played with and the guys from decades prior and after that played here. You also have to take your hat off to Mr. Bowlen, because year in and year out, he and the organization really roll out the red carpet to all the Alumni and host a wonderful weekend event of golf, meetings and the game. Thank you Mr. Bowlen, from all the Alumni.

Toughness on Display

October 5th, 2008 - 8:47pm by mike_riceOther posts by

Sometimes you just have to put your foot down. The Broncos did that in Sunday’s 16-13 win over the Buccaneers.

Don’t get me wrong. I love watching shootouts. But there is something to be said for winning a defensive struggle. The Broncos showed they could do that.

I won’t pretend the Buccaneers have an elite offense. The fact remains, however, that they were averaging 350.2 yards per game entering Sunday’s game. They had only 307 against the Broncos.

They were also averaging 22.8 points per game before Sunday. They had just over half that against the Broncos.

The Bucs had allowed just four sacks in the first four games and none in the two games leading up to Sunday’s contest against the Broncos. Denver had three sacks in the 16-13 win.

For as much as the Broncos’ defense struggled early in the season, it toughened up against the Buccaneers. In seven of their 11 possessions, the Buccaneers had the ball for under 2:30. Only four of their possessions netted 37 yards or more. The other seven drives netted nine yards or fewer.
