Costly Win versus Buccaneers, 4-1

October 6th, 2008 - 9:23am by mark_cooperOther posts by mark_cooper

Costly game with Scheffler and Royal banged up. We’ll get to that later.

The funniest play of the day was the Marcus Thomas interception. He dropped back into coverage from the inside rush position and intercepted the ball then proceeded to look like a stalled pick-up truck in a parking lot. A lot of shake and bake, juking like jello and trying to pull his leg out of the mud and then coughing it up. I’d have loved to seen his face when the ball came out and the Bucs recovered.

The defense had flashes of brilliance and at times played as well as I’ve seen them play all year. (Blogger)-Monodono, you may have hit it on the head last week with your comments about the Defense finding their identity. And Yardo, you’re always on top of it!! 3 sacks and 1 interception!!

If you didn’t know, it was Alumni weekend and I had a great time at the game as my two former teams played each other with the added benefit of seeing a bunch of the guys I played with and the guys from decades prior and after that played here. You also have to take your hat off to Mr. Bowlen, because year in and year out, he and the organization really roll out the red carpet to all the Alumni and host a wonderful weekend event of golf, meetings and the game. Thank you Mr. Bowlen, from all the Alumni.

Toughness on Display

October 5th, 2008 - 8:47pm by mike_riceOther posts by mike_rice

Sometimes you just have to put your foot down. The Broncos did that in Sunday’s 16-13 win over the Buccaneers.

Don’t get me wrong. I love watching shootouts. But there is something to be said for winning a defensive struggle. The Broncos showed they could do that.

I won’t pretend the Buccaneers have an elite offense. The fact remains, however, that they were averaging 350.2 yards per game entering Sunday’s game. They had only 307 against the Broncos.

They were also averaging 22.8 points per game before Sunday. They had just over half that against the Broncos.

The Bucs had allowed just four sacks in the first four games and none in the two games leading up to Sunday’s contest against the Broncos. Denver had three sacks in the 16-13 win.

For as much as the Broncos’ defense struggled early in the season, it toughened up against the Buccaneers. In seven of their 11 possessions, the Buccaneers had the ball for under 2:30. Only four of their possessions netted 37 yards or more. The other seven drives netted nine yards or fewer.

Wild-Card Recap

January 7th, 2008 - 2:46am by AndrewOther posts by Andrew

Observations, witticisms and other random thoughts from a playoff weekend …

THE PREDICTIONS SO FAR:

ANDREW MASON: 2-2

MIKE RICE, NEWSRADIO 850 KOA: 3-1

KYLE MONTGOMERY, BRONCOTALK: 3-1

JOHN BENA, MILE HIGH REPORT:: 3-1

JONATHAN DOUGLAS, BRONCOTALK: 2-2

Worthy kudos to Mike, Kyle and John. Perhaps I’ll forecast next weekend’s contests with a clearer head now that the team for which I had season tickets while growing up — Tampa Bay — has been scratched from the docket.

SEATTLE 35, WASHINGTON 14

So much for momentum.

Washington’s lofty hopes were spoiled quickly and exploded like a ripe banana in a microwave. Two plays from scrimmage, two Seattle touchdowns — one on a D.J. Hackett reception and the other on Marcus Trufant’s 78-yard interception return — sent the Redskins home just when it seemed they had snatched all momentum and were poised to deal the Seahawks a humbling home defeat.

Wild-Card Preview: NFC

January 4th, 2008 - 7:30pm by AndrewOther posts by Andrew

Redskins-Seahawks
WASHINGTON (9-7) AT SEATTLE (10-6)

WHEN: Saturday, 2:30 p.m. MST
WHERE: Qwest Field, Seattle
TV: NBC

GHOSTS OF PLAYOFFS PAST:

WASHINGTON: John Riggins. This is the 25th anniversary of the Redskins’ run to Super Bowl XVII — and I use the word “run” because it was Riggins who carried the team to the promised land of Pasadena. One-hundred and nineteen yards against Detroit in the opening-round win over Detroit … another 185 yards a week later against Minnesota … a 140-yard stampede over Dallas in the NFC Championship … and a then-Super Bowl record 166 yards against Miami to give the Redskins their first world title in 40 years. He would eventually stretch his run of consecutive 100-yard playoff games to six before having it snapped in Super Bowl XVIII a year later. The only man with more consecutive 100-yard rushing games in the playoffs? Denver’s Terrell Davis.

What’s after Detroit?

November 6th, 2007 - 11:00am by mark_cooperOther posts by mark_cooper

Let’s keep the season in perspective. It’s tough to watch a game as lopsided as the Detroit game. It hurts because you want YOUR TEAM to win and if you didn’t want YOUR TEAM to win, you wouldn’t be a TRUE fan. If you didn’t get upset you wouldn’t be a true fan. If you didn’t care we wouldn’t be blogging. :o)

I like many of you get upset with the “L” word. I’ve never had that word programmed into my mind as I played sports my entire life and I still compete daily in my real estate business for new business.

Many of you do too, on a day to day basis, in some small way. We’re all competitors.

“L-ing” isn’t in my vocabulary and it shouldn’t be in yours. I use words like set-back or ran-out-of-time. Really though, the reason I went through the above drill, so-to-speak was because after I played for the Broncos, I went to play for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers where our record was as follows.

1987/4-11
1988/5-11
1989/5-11

Talk about tough, that’s tough, winning a total of 14 games in 3 seasons.

That’s why I’m having so much fun reading the papers and listening to the news and blogging this season because I know what it’s like and how different a town is (feels & thinks) that only wins 4 or 5 games in a season.

Just one or two injuries on a team can ruin a season for most NFL teams. We’ve had MANY more than our share and personally I was wondering if it was going to (or really when) would it show up. Well, it has.

We’re not firing anyone.  We’re playing with what we have and going to do the best we can under the conditions presented because you can’t change injuries or cry about them. It’s a violent game and unfortunately part of the game.
