SUPER BOWL XLVI
NEW YORK GIANTS vs. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS

What a matchup this figures to be.

The Patriots stormed their way to a 13-3 record and the top seed in the AFC.

The Giants caught fire at the end of the season and defeated the top two teams on the road in the playoffs.

The memory of the Giants’ 17-14 win over the Patriots in Super Bowl XLII is still fresh. That defeat spoiled New England’s bid for the second undefeated season in NFL history.

This most recent Giants-Patriots matchup is as compelling as the one four years ago.

INDIANAPOLIS – For the first time this week, both the Patriots and Giants practiced on Wednesday. New England had practiced in full pads on Monday, but today marked the first practice in Indianapolis for New York.

“We are excited about getting on the football field,” Giants defensive end Justin Tuck said. “It’s been a couple of days now, and guys are starting to chomp at the bit. We’re ready to get back to preparing to win a game on Sunday. A lot of us wish we could play it today, but we’ve got to wait until Sunday. Today will be the next step toward getting ready for the game.”

The Giants installed most of their game plan last week in New Jersey, but will make some small adjustments as the week goes on.

“All the work has been done,” Giants quarterback Eli Manning said. “Now it’s just a matter of continuing to run the plays and get more reps at them, and prepare for a few different looks that New England does.”

Heading into their first practice of the week, Manning said the team’s goal is to be just as sharp and focused as they would at home during a typical game week.

“We just want to have a great practice,” he said. “When you get here, you want things to be crisp. Get on the field, run around, have smooth practices and just get ready to play.”

INDIANAPOLIS — Players and coaches from both teams met the media on Tuesday at Super Bowl XLVI Media Day at Lucas Oil Stadium. Broncos linebacker Von Miller even joined the media horde to interview players on behalf of Gatorade. As is typical on Media Day at the Super Bowl, a few press members dressed up in costume, drawing amusement from the players and the rest of the media.

Below are some quotes from the owners and a pair of players from each team:

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS

OWNER ROBERT KRAFT

On the atmosphere surrounding the Patriots
“There is a special bond on this team. Our locker room is a special place. You can feel it. Even before we came out on the field, there is a camaraderie bond that is special. Part of it is that I’m a believer in spirituality…I think we have very high-quality people on this team and I’m hoping it all comes together on Sunday.”

On what this season has meant to him
“I never understood what it meant to lose someone who you had great respect for. (Myra Kraft) was the greatest person in my life. It’s hard to understand what losing someone means unless you’ve gone through it. She was my best pal. It’s hard for anyone to understand heartache unless they’ve gone through it themselves. The fact that I’m privileged to own an NFL team in my hometown – these 53 guys have been my savior. The have been respectful to me. They presented me with an oil painting when we clinched the bye. I don’t know what’s going to happen after Sunday, but they have sure kept me busy every night right through now.”
