Cowboys at Camp: Day 1, PM

August 13th, 2008 - 6:47pm by Adam ZinserOther posts by

The Broncos and Cowboys got back to it this afternoon, kicking off the second practice at around 4:30. At an hour and a half long, the afternoon session was a little shorter than the morning one, and after individual team drills, the two teams came together for two 11-on-11 periods with a special teams segment wedged in between.

ATTENDANCE REPORT: In addition to the players out of pads during the morning session, a number of Broncos veterans got their normal afternoon off. Ebenezer Ekuban, Darrell Jackson, Dewayne Robertson, Brandon Stokley and Casey Wiegmann joined their injured teammates on the sidelines.

POSTURING FOR POSITION: The lineups were the same for the most part, but with both Nalen and Wiegmann out, P.J. Alexander and Kory Lichtensteiger rotated at the center position. Kenny Peterson worked with the starting defense in the place of Robertson.

MATCHUPS: As with this morning, each field had a different set of drills, so we combined “Focal Points” and “Key Plays” into one category. Here is the breakdown of how each competition went down.

A.M. Blog: Day 7

July 31st, 2008 - 11:48am by Adam ZinserOther posts by

After a short press conference with Head Coach Mike Shanahan, John Lynch officially announced that he is leaving the Broncos to explore other options. The Broncos granted his release.

I have always looked at Lynch as one of the class acts in the NFL. He has been one of my all-time favorite players for as long as I can remember following football. I wish that I could have worked with him more.

47, best of luck in all your future endeavors!

Now on to some of the meat from this morning’s practice.

ATTENDANCE REPORT: After participating in yesterday afternoon’s jog-through practice, Montrae Holland continued to work out on his own this morning. Tom Nalen continued to watch from the sidelines to rest his knee, but he kept his eyes on all the offensive line action. Michael Pittman donned his jersey, but was yet again out of pads. He stuck with the rest of the running backs, observing and giving pointers. Peyton Hillis and Chad Mustard both remained sidelined with their sore hamstrings. Also out of pads was Ebenezer Ekuban. He was on the field watching the action, but not participating.

POSTURING FOR POSITION: Wiegmann continued to work at center with Nalen out, and today he spoke with a couple reporters after practice.

“I’m getting reps in there with the starters, and the important thing is actually me getting used to them,” Wiegmann said. “I have been so used to my guys in Kansas City, so it’s just getting a feel for everybody here. That’s part of camp.”

“Meaningless?” Not Exactly …

December 17th, 2007 - 3:39am by AndrewOther posts by

Team Huddle

I’m not going to remember exactly where I was when the Broncos were officially eliminated from postseason consideration on Sunday afternoon. Truth be told, I’m not even sure I recall it right now. I was in the midst of errands, dashing around the southern half of the Denver metropolitan area and finding out how the rest of the world spends its autumn and early-winter Sundays. I reckon, therefore, that I was somewhere along Yosemite Street near the sprawling Park Meadows shopping complex, or perhaps on Lincoln Ave. to the south.

But I had been listening to or watching the Chargers’ 51-14 rout of the Detroit Lions as I skedaddled from one stop to the next, so I’d long since reconciled myself to the fact that no Lions rally was going to happen. The game started before the last of the early duels had been completed and seemed to pass out of doubt’s purview somewhere about the time the Miami Dolphins posted their first game-winning score of the year.

Thus entails the overuse of the word “meaningless” in the next seven days, in television, in newspaper copy, in blogs, in message boards, in evening-time chatter over an egg-nog latte at Starbucks.

This notion has always rankled me.

Starting To Look Ahead

December 14th, 2007 - 10:12am by mike_riceOther posts by

I know there are two games left and the Broncos need to try to win them. But I’m taking a deep breath after the loss to Houston and starting to think about next year.

The Broncos aren’t mathematically eliminated from the playoffs but the way they are playing, and have played this year, they have showed they are not a playoff team.

But they have pieces in place that, to me, show they could be a playoff team again as early as next year.

Early Pregame: Selvin Young, Pictures, Etc.

December 13th, 2007 - 3:46pm by AndrewOther posts by

Twelve months ago, Vince Young’s homecoming to Houston was so complete, he might as well have had a Barcalounger, a high-definition television and a refrigerator installed at the 50-yard-line of Reliant Stadium.

First, he directed drives that brought the Tennessee Titans back from deficits of 14-6 and 17-13. Then he sprinted 39 yards for the game-winning touchdown through a defense that seemed trapped in cement as the quarterback sprinted past them.

Many in the sold-out Reliant Stadium throng went bonkers. The hometown team had lost, but the hometown hero had made good, to the delight of friends, family and people who support the University of Texas football program above all other earth-bound entities.

This year, it’s Selvin Young‘s turn to go home. Tonight, he’ll attempt to replicate what his close friend of the same surname accomplished 368 days ago — to send his hometown followers into giddy hysterics.

“I’m really expecting to have a big game,” Young said. “Hopefully I’ll have the same kind of fun (Vince Young) had when he played.”

Tuesday Practice: Inside Job

December 11th, 2007 - 2:29pm by AndrewOther posts by

Brandon Stokley in the Sports Dome

For Brandon Stokley, it’s time to wait.

Two days after pain in his strained left knee truncated his workload to barely over two quarters in the win over Kansas City, the veteran wide receiver did not practice, with he and the Broncos opting to give him at least one extra day before testing out the knee.

“He’s still a little sore,” Head Coach Mike Shanahan said following the team’s 90-minute practice, which was moved to the nearby South Suburban Sports Dome due to the overnight and early-morning winter storm that covered the region with a few inches of snowfall.

Stokley said Tuesday that he wouldn’t even hit the treadmill for some jogging, opting for complete rest. He worked out on the treadmill last Thursday before practicing a day later in advance of the Chiefs game.

Dumervil, Young, Cutler Up for Awards

December 11th, 2007 - 10:20am by AndrewOther posts by

Another win equals more award nominations for the Broncos, honors that you can help them receive with your votes.

Up for GMC Defensive Player of the Week is Elvis Dumervil, who started Sunday as the cover subject of Broncos Gameday magazine and then proved there’s no jinx associated with that particular publication, notching three sacks, forcing a fumble and amassing five tackles. His three sacks took him to 11 on the season, the most for a Bronco in three years.

For Diet Pepsi Rookie of the Week, it’s running back Selvin Young, who sprinted for 156 yards on just 17 carries, including a 50-yard jaunt up the left sideline on the second play of the game. Young now has an average of 83.3 yards per start in his five game-opening assignments, all of which have come since the Broncos’ Week 6 bye.

Finally, for FedEx Air Player of the Week, it’s quarterback Jay Cutler, who notched the most efficient performance of his two-season career, completing 20 of his 27 passes for 244 yards and four touchdowns — two to Brandon Marshall and one each to Brandon Stokley and Daniel Graham — during the win.

‘Wait and See’ for Stokley; Hall, Young Return to Full Practice

Brandon Stokley

For the last three weeks, injuries at running back have been a defining Broncos storyline. But with Andre Hall, Travis Henry and Selvin Young all back at practice and taking part in the full gamut of activities Wednesday, the harsh injury spotlight shone on wide receiver Brandon Stokley, who sat out Wednesday after injuring his left knee Sunday at Oakland.

This is the second knee problem for Stokley in two weeks; he bruised his right knee against Chicago and missed the Wednesday practice but was back to work a day later.
