Ready for the Combine …

2008 Scouting Combine

The laptop hums well past midnight. The Diet Mountain Dew flows into my cup, Niagara-like in its volume and pace. The up-tempo ’70s soul music peps through my headphones, keeping me awake as the minutes pass like seconds. There’s so much steam rising from vents outside my hotel-room window that a frigid fog seems to hang in suspension over the nearby, domed football stadium. Each step on the sidewalk is accompanied by the crunch of salt and ice; each newscast leads its sports report with college or high-school basketball.

It must be February in Indianapolis.

Combine time.

So far, this has been a placid trip, considering how some of my voyages to far-flung destinations took turns that would have made Odysseus or Uncle Traveling Matt blanch.

Uncle Traveling Matt

Turns out that Wednesday’s trip here was as uneventful as My Dinner With André.

A Brief Respite …

February 11th, 2008 - 12:11am by AndrewOther posts by

With the Combine coming up later this month and the free-agency and pre-draft buildup to follow, I’m taking a few days to relax, so posts aren’t as frequent right now.

Talk to you soon, and if you have a sweetheart, make sure you treat that special someone right on Valentine’s Day.  This means DVRing, TiVoing or recording any sporting event you might plan to watch that night and taking that significant other to dinner or, better yet, making something yourself.

Vaya con dios.

Oh, and One More Thing …

Recognize this building?

Thornton Melon's Fictional Home

It’s Slichter Hall on the University of Wisconsin campus. That probably doesn’t mean much to anyone … except that this building was used as the exterior for the dorm of Rodney Dangerfield, a.k.a. Thornton Melon, in the 1980s classic Back to School.

The Wisconsin campus was used as a stand-in for the fictional Grand Lakes University, so I asked everyone around whether it would be okay if I found a terry-cloth robe and walked across the campus like Rodney. No one laughed. I reckon I need a better audience.

Divisional Playoff Recap

January 14th, 2008 - 9:02pm by AndrewOther posts by

Everyone misfired on Colts-Chargers … and we now have a two-way deadlock for first place heading into the conference championships:

THE PREDICTIONS SO FAR:

ANDREW MASON: 4-4

MIKE RICE, NEWSRADIO 850 KOA: 4-4

KYLE MONTGOMERY, BRONCOTALK: 6-2

JOHN BENA, MILE HIGH REPORT:: 6-2

JONATHAN DOUGLAS, BRONCOTALK: 4-4

GREEN BAY 42, SEATTLE 20

“Is it snowing there?” queried a friend back in Colorado via text-message as the Packers and Seahawks battled in a gorgeous snowfall that is surprisingly rare for playoff games at Lambeau Field.

Where I was — elsewhere in Wisconsin — the landscape was wintry, but the skies were dry.

State Street Brats

There was no snow beyond a few flurries in Madison, which is 135 miles south-southwest of Green Bay. But by dining at the locally renowned State Street Brats, a favored establishment among University of Wisconsin students and state-government officials alike, I gave myself the next-best experience to being at Lambeau, replete with Brett Favre jerseys galore and the ubiquitous “Go Pack Go” cheer being played over the speakers throughout the restaurant.

(And by the way, from being at Lambeau Field once before, I can only offer this thought on the “Go Pack Go” cheer — cut it back a bit. It’s like going to games at Oklahoma or Tennessee, where one hears “Boomer Sooner” or “Rocky Top” after every … single … play. Two-yard run off tackle? Strike up the band! Less is more, everyone.)

In the News: Jan. 4

No Broncos or NFL information contained herein; that’s for this afternoon:

Headlines for a midday:

AP: Oklahoma City Mayor Puts City on a Diet

The Oklahoma Legislature designated an official state meal in 1988. The menu also includes fried okra, squash, barbecue pork, biscuits, grits, corn, strawberries and black-eyed peas.

Sounds like an afternoon snack at my family reunion.

The Festivus Story

December 23rd, 2007 - 11:37am by AndrewOther posts by

Decades ago, in Bayside, Queens, a somewhat short-tempered salesman of religious artifacts became disillusioned with the religious and commercial aspects of Christmas.

Whilst in a busy store one year, this well-traveled salesman experienced an epiphany.

Thoughts, Photos and Leftovers …

Week 13 leftovers and Week 14 appetizers …

… At least now the questions about Travis Henry can stop. Seldom was the press briefing for Head Coach Mike Shanahan in the last few weeks that the subject of his appeal did not arise. Now the public focus on Henry can go back to his recovery from a partially torn posterior cruciate ligament, which had progressed enough for him to play Sunday and score twice — although his playing time was more than Shanahan hoped, as he noted at his postgame and Monday afternoon briefings. The first illumination on the health of Denver’s running backs will come Wednesday afternoon at practice …

… With Chiefs head coach Herm Edwards already ruling Larry Johnson out for Sunday, it’s their quarterback situation that bears watching in regards to injuries. Brodie Croyle missed last week with a bruised lower back, and Edwards indicated he wouldn’t try to shove the second-year passer into Sunday’s game if he wasn’t healthy enough.

“If he can’t protect himself and we feel he’s not mobile enough to get out of the way, then there’s no need to play him this week,” Edwards said Tuesday. “But he’s going to come to practice tomorrow and we’ll see where he’s at.

“You definitely want to see more of Brodie Croyle, but you’re not going to put him in there wounded either. That’s not fair to the kid.”

If Anyone Needs Me, I’ll Be at Slammer’s

November 18th, 2007 - 2:49pm by AndrewOther posts by

Where’s the new blog entry, DAMNIT!

Y’all are an impatient bunch sometimes.

Yes, I figured I would write a blog on Saturday. But I wasn’t going to rearrange my schedule for it — especially on what is the closest I come to a day off during the season, a home-game Saturday. It was a good day to watch some football … to do some Christmas shopping … to fix a meal by myself for a change instead of going out or relying upon the home-cooking kindness of my girlfriend … to put down the computer and back away for a few hours.

Oh, and for whoever asked … it was Broomfield 7, Fountain-Fort Carson 6. If you’d like to watch the highlights and also find out what else happened in the state playoffs, I strongly encourage you to follow this link and watch Football Colorado later today when they get the week’s show up.

Anyhow …

It’s still strange to me to be in a press box on Sunday afternoons, fixated on just one game. In the back of my mind, I feel as though I belong someplace where I can flip among numerous games, where I don’t have to fixate on any one particular game and can simply drown in the weekly flood of televised football.

Back from the Bye

October 15th, 2007 - 3:39am by AndrewOther posts by

Notes as I begin sifting through the comments posted since my last entry … many of which I will reply to within the following 48 hours …

I can only hope that everyone else in Broncoland returning from near and far has more energy than I do, that the players and coaches who scattered about were able to get more rest than I could, and that no one is dealing with an injury that is as painful as this right elbow that flares and throbs with each letter I type.

Whether I managed to find much time for sleep amidst darting from one family function to another — all following a one-hour night of sleep that began the weekend last Thursday — won’t make a whit of difference for the Broncos as they reconvene Monday for practice, just as they have following other bye weekends in recent years.

But for the players and coaches, the potential benefits of the time away won’t be fully known until we see them in action Sunday night against Pittsburgh, when they look to snap a three-game skid and find their old form after going 4-8 in their last 12 games, including a 2-5 home record in that span.

“By no means is this thing over,” safety John Lynch said before the bye weekend. “It’s just we’ve got to come together — coaches, players, everyone — and get the thing right. Start doing things in the right way and making plays.

“I think we all believe we have the talent in this locker room. I think what’s become apparent, talent alone doesn’t win you games, you’ve got to execute and all those things, and I think we will when we come back.”

Some quick bye-week stats of note to mention as the Broncos begin gathering once again:

Denver is 14-4 following its bye week, which is the second-best post-bye record in the league. It was tied for the best with the Philadelphia Eagles and Minnesota Vikings, but both moved to 15-4 in that scenario Sunday with wins over the New York Jets and Chicago Bears, respectively …

… Head Coach Mike Shanahan’s post-bye record is 9-3, and his teams have won four such contests in succession, the most recent being a 13-3 Monday Night Football triumph over the Baltimore Ravens last October …

… The Broncos’ post-bye home record is 10-2.

Of course, numbers and references to the past are but a guideline; it is the present collection of Broncos — which, because of injuries last week, is down both Tom Nalen and Nate Jackson — who will have to try to uphold those trends.

More to come later today as the Broncos return to Dove Valley, return to practice and look to set their course right after a three-game losing streak leading into the one-week respite. Until then, I need to get some sleep myself, so vaya con Dios.
