Not A Bad Start

August 16th, 2009 - 9:41pm by mike_riceOther posts by mike_rice

The focal point of the Broncos’ 17-16 loss to San Francisco in the pre-season opener will undoubtedly be the three interceptions that starting quarterback Kyle Orton threw in the first half.

We all know interceptions aren’t good. Even after the game, Kyle was a stand-up guy when he spoke with us on the 850 KOA post-game show.

“I pride myself on my decisions and I certainly made a couple I’d like to have back,” Orton said.

This isn’t the regular season yet. It is the preseason. For that matter, it was the first game of the preseason. No one, most of all Orton himself, wanted to see the interceptions. But I’ll put those aside for now. I thought the offense did some good things, even in the first half.

No Panic…..it’s Early

August 16th, 2009 - 9:18pm by mark_cooperOther posts by mark_cooper

Here’s what I know about preseason:

It’s shorter.
Guys have only been hitting for only a few weeks.
Offense always takes longer to jell than defense.
Many mistakes get made in the early games.
New offense, new defense — could take a while to get in a groove.
Have patience.
Controversy sells newspapers and fills airtime on talk radio.

Broncos at 49ers: Second Half Live Blog

August 14th, 2009 - 9:38pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by Gray Caldwell

15:00: Kenny McKinley returns the kickoff to start the second half, taking it 24 yards out to the 39-yard line.

14:10: Chris Simms is in at quarterback, and Peyton Hillis takes the carry on first down, picking up three yards. The offensive line consists of Tyler Polumbus, Matt McChesney, Kory Lichtensteiger, Seth Olsen and Brandon Gorin. Richard Quinn is in at tight end, and Brandon Lloyd, Chad Jackson and Nate Swift at receiver. Hillis is in the backfield.

14:07: After a San Francisco timeout, it’s 2nd-and-7 for Denver at its own 42-yard line. Hillis takes the carry up the middle of the line and powers his way for close to a first down. It’s marked just short, setting up a 3rd-and-1.

13:30: With Spencer Larsen leading the way at fullback, Hillis takes the carry up the right side of the line for a four-yard gain and a first down.

Broncos at 49ers: First Half Live Blog

Pregame:For those of you who have checked out our live blogs in the past, we’ll be doing things slightly differently this year. As you might have noticed, we’re using a new program that should update the posts for you automatically. If it seems like it’s been a while since the last update, just refresh the page like you normally would. The other difference is that we will only have a first half and second half live blog as opposed to dividing it up into four quarters.

And now, without further adieu…let’s get the 2009 campaign started.

15:00: Here we go. The captains are on the field — Daniel Graham, D.J. Williams, Mario Haggan, Champ Bailey, Kenny Peterson and Ben Hamilton are representing the Broncos.

San Francisco has won the toss and elects to receive. Matt Prater and the Broncos are on the field to kick off.

14:57: Players on both teams are jumping up and down on the sidelines as the game gets underway. The Niners are at their own 22 after the Prater kick.

Broncos at 49ers: Pregame Blog

Here we are at the top of Candlestick Park, sitting in the press box. The first preseason game of the Broncos’ 2009 campaign kicks off in two hours, and you can already sense the anticipation.

Plenty of Broncos are already out on the field warming up, many of whom have on their uniform pants. Ben Hamilton, Joshua Bell, Nate Swift and Lonie Paxton are just a few of the players tossing the ball around, jogging and stretching.

There aren’t any fans in the stadium quite yet, but there could be quite a crowd — as it’s a beautiful day for football. In fact, here’s a weather report for the game:

Singletary’s 49ers, let’s GO!!

August 13th, 2009 - 8:36pm by mark_cooperOther posts by mark_cooper

Hi all,

Don’t know if it’s me or my tech skills but I haven’t been able to see the post or responses to the last post that had Mondono on the cover with a nice fish. Hopefully you can tell me after I post this.

NINERS tomorrow and it looks like Harris is in good shape and I’m excited to see what we put on the field. Full compliment of running backs and some (ALMOST) ALL new faces on D.

I never get to excited but this years going to be like watching a new team all together. I don’t know about you but I almost have that weird pre-game nervousness to how we do.

Here’s my overview. IF we can stay healthy and Coach McDaniels delivers what I think he is going to deliver, we control the ball and keep the defense off the field and we win more than we don’t win. (never use the L word).

What do you think? Am I losing it or are you with me? I have to go with Mondono’s (TIME OF POSSESSION) mantra more this year than ever.

Go Broncos!!

More Than Just Another Preseason Opener

August 12th, 2009 - 12:29am by mike_riceOther posts by mike_rice

The building process continues for the 2009 Denver Broncos. This week, Head Coach Josh McDaniels released the first depth chart of training camp. While a part of me believes too much is made of the depth chart, especially the first one, I also find it fun to look it over.

Some impressions:

1) There aren’t any huge surprises. There is no 2009 Mike Bell, the free agent running back who found himself atop the depth chart a few seasons ago. Mario Haggan listed at first team outside linebacker is probably the most unexpected placing.

Broncos-49ers: Fourth-Quarter Notes

August 13th, 2007 - 8:55pm by AndrewOther posts by Andrew

Notes from the fourth quarter (wholly unoriginal opening, I know) …

7:19 P.M. PDT: Two passes, two incompletions as the 49ers attempt to turn first-and-goal into their first touchdown since the first quarter. (That’s a lot of firsts.)

7:20 P.M. PDT: If at first you don’t succeed … after Steve Cargile was denied a goal-line interception on a tipped ball in the second quarter, he got an errant end-zone pass in the fourth.

7:23 P.M. PDT: Three-and-out for the Broncos, but Todd Sauerbrun got off his best punt of the night, covering a net of 43 yards.

Broncos-49ers: Third-Quarter Notes

August 13th, 2007 - 8:16pm by AndrewOther posts by Andrew

Random thought with which to begin the second half … I miss the Old West saloon-style font that the 49ers once used to display their nickname in the end zones here at Monster Park. The way “49ers” is written now is a little too generic and just a smidgen too close to their disastrous experiment at changing the logo back in 1992. This was so bad, it lasted only a day. If it’s going to be “Bill Walsh Field,” I say make the thing look the way it did when he was coaching — minus the baseball infield, of course, which would nowadays be superfluous with the Giants at AT&T Park a few miles to the north.

6:53 P.M. PDT: As Bart Simpson once said, “Time for chili.” Meanwhile, the second half is underwary and Shaun Hill just kept the Broncos from a half-opening three-and-out stop with a 19-yard scramble into the open field.

6:57 P.M. PDT: Forty Niners back in scoring range again, although Kenard Lang and Alvin McKinley just forced the Niners into a fourth-and-1 … from which they got nowhere after Nate Webster helped collapse the blocking, stopping Arkee Whitlock in the backfield and ending the 49ers’ threat at the Denver 29.

Broncos-49ers: Second-Quarter Notes

August 13th, 2007 - 7:36pm by AndrewOther posts by Andrew

Heidi-ho, and off we go, on to the second quarter …

5:45 P.M. PDT: This press box is just sound-proof enough for me to be unable to get a feel for the music. But I can tell they’re playing Jungle Boogie right now. Always a good choice, even when we’re not in Cincinnati.

5:46 P.M. PDT: Touchdown, Troy Fleming, who looked very much like Kyle Johnson in swinging to the goal line in the right side of the field to receive Patrick Ramsey’s pass. The three-yard score puts Denver back in front, 14-10.

5:51 P.M. PDT: Running-back stats — Mike Bell: Five carries for 35 yards; Cecil Sapp: two carries for 13 yards; Travis Henry: five carries for 27 yards. The second-team defense makes its first appearance, and the tandem of defensive ends Jarvis Moss and Tim Crowder made its first impact, as both stalked Trent Dilfer and forced him to the left side, where Crowder notched the sack. Two plays later, Jimmy Kennedy stops Michael Robinson in the open field, and the 49ers will punt from their 24-yard-line.
