A Familiar Foe

Arguably no one in the Broncos’ locker room knows the Pittsburgh Steelers — as presently constructed — better than Ryan McBean.

After all, the 6-foot-5, 295-pound defensive lineman spent his first two seasons in the NFL (2007-08 and 2008-09) on Pittsburgh’s practice squad. So he got a first-hand look at the defending Super Bowl Champions last season.

Well-versed in Pittsburgh’s defensive scheme, McBean said he has been able to share a few notes about Dick LeBeau’s unit with his offensive counterparts. But he has plenty of confidence that the offense will be ready for the challenge at hand.

“I try to share my part, give my part,” McBean said. “But these guys, they come here to work. All they’ve got to do is just watch tape and it shows for itself.”

Preparing for the Elements

After a morning full of less-than-ideal weather — on and off rain showers, occasional snow flurries, gusting winds and chilly temperatures — Head Coach Josh McDaniels was asked if he planned on conducting the afternoon practice session outdoors or at the team’s indoor facility just down the street.

Although the club practiced at “the bubble” during minicamps, the club hasn’t been back at the indoor facility since then. McDaniels said returning indoors isn’t in the cards anytime soon, citing that the team needs to get used to possible conditions that could arise on Sundays.

“If we are going to play in it, I hope we’ve practiced in it,” McDaniels said. “That’s going to be our philosophy. If it’s wet, damp, raining, snowing, whatever — we’re going to be outside.”

And the transactions just keep on coming.

Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced Monday that the team claimed safety Calvin Lowry off waivers from the Tennessee Titans. The Broncos waived Roderick Rogers to make room for Lowry on the roster.

They also added three players to the practice squad in defensive end Ryan McBean, running back P.J. Pope and wide receiver Travis Wilson.

Lowry joins the Broncos after spending the past two years in Tennessee. The Titans drafted Lowry in the fifth round of the 2006 NFL Draft from Penn State University. He played in 36 games for the Titans, starting 11 last year, and he has racked up 62 tackles, two interceptions, 12 passes defensed and 19 special teams stops.
