Training Camp Day 1: P.M. Blog

July 31st, 2009 - 9:32pm by Zach EisendrathOther posts by Zach Eisendrath

Day one of training camp has come to a close. The Broncos completed their first evening practice on a brisk night at Dove Valley, lasting just over two hours.

After enjoying ideal conditions for the morning practice — warm temperatures with a bit of shade — temperatures dropped considerably for the p.m. practice. Still, for the most part the weather again cooperated, as the team managed to avoided the rain that fell at Dove Valley for much of the afternoon.

Here are some tidbits from the team’s second practice of the day:

Clady Named Second-Team All-Pro

January 9th, 2009 - 12:00pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by Gray Caldwell

The Associated Press released its 2008 NFL All-Pro team on Friday, and Ryan Clady made the cut.

Clady is the first tackle listed on the second team offense.

The rookie had an impressive debut season as a professional — he didn’t allow a full sack in 16 starts at left tackle, part of an offensive line that set a Broncos franchise record by allowing only 12 sacks all year.

He was named Diet Pepsi Rookie of the Week in Week 14.

Clady Third in R.O.Y. Voting

December 30th, 2008 - 1:26pm by Adam ZinserOther posts by Adam Zinser

The has announced that quarterback Matt Ryan of the Atlanta Falcons has won the AP 2008 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Award.

That comes as no surprise to many people, as Ryan has keyed the huge turnaround in Atlanta — taking the 4-12 squad from a year ago and leading them to an 11-5 record and playoff berth in 2008. And Ryan certainly deserves congratulations after his great year.

But more importantly for Broncos Country, Ryan Clady finished third in voting.

50 total votes were cast, with Ryan receiving 44 of them. In distant second place was Tennessee running back Chris Johnson, earning three votes. Then came Clady with two while Bears running back Matt Forte got one.

Many Broncos believe Clady deserves Pro Bowl honors, considering he did not give up a full sack while starting all 16 games, but though he didn’t earn a trip to Hawaii, getting votes for Rookie of the Year shows that his excellent play did not go unnoticed. Clady also won Diet Pepsi Rookie of the Week Honors in Week 14.

Congrats to Ryan!

Moving Forward

THE SHOW MUST GO ON

Even though the Broncos fell just short of the postseason, it’s still playoff time in the NFL, and that means that players, coaches and fans are excited.

The Broncos’ excitement is certainly tempered, by Brandon Stokley said he can’t help but to watch some of this weekend’s matchups.

“I am a football fan,” he said. “I love football. I love watching the playoffs. I will be cheering for Indy.”

Stokley used to play for the Indianapolis Colts, and it doesn’t hurt that they’re going up against the San Diego Chargers.

Jay Cutler, on the other hand, said his TV won’t be tuned in to any playoff football.

“I won’t watch them,” he said. “No interest in it.”

Clady, Kuper Practice; Edwards Back for Bills

December 19th, 2008 - 12:45pm by Adam ZinserOther posts by Adam Zinser

It was another frigid day at Dove Valley, and it doesn’t look like it’s going to warm up any time soon in Denver. That just means the players have been able to practice in conditions similar to what will likely be a very cold game on Sunday.

BACK ON THE FIELD

The biggest news Friday was that Ryan Clady and Chris Kuper both returned to practice after missing the first two days with injuries. Clady suffered a sprained ankle against the Panthers while Kuper broke a bone in his left hand.

“He practiced today and looked good, hopefully he’ll be able to go,” Head Coach Mike Shanahan said about Clady. “Same thing for Chris. He just has to handle the pain. He’s a tough guy.”

As for the players themselves? Well, offensive linemen are reknowned for their short responses to reporters’ questions, if they even are willing to hold an interview at all. But a few daring reporters attempted to get a word from Clady in the locker room after practice, and the rookie left tackle gave them two.

When asked if he was feeling well, “Yep” was Clady’s reply.

And when asked if he would play against the Bills?

“Yep.”

Enough said.

Clady and Cutler Honored, Injury Updates

December 12th, 2008 - 3:17pm by Jake GrilleyOther posts by Jake Grilley

AWARD UPDATES:
The Broncos Ryan Clady and Jay Cutler were each honored with NFL awards for their performances in Week 14.

Clady was named Diet Pepsi Rookie of the Week, the first time an offensive lineman has won the award since it started in 2004. Clady led an offensive line that allowed Cutler to pass for 286 yards and two touchdowns, prevented Kansas City from recording a sack and allowed Denver to total 139 rushing yards in the team’s 24 -17 win over the Chiefs.

Clady is the fourth Bronco to have won the award this season. Eddie Royal has been voted Diet Pepsi Rookie of the Week twice. It is the fourth time in the last five weeks that a Denver Rookie has taken home the award.

Clady, Cutler Up for Awards

December 9th, 2008 - 11:08am by Adam ZinserOther posts by Adam Zinser

Another big win for the Broncos, another round of award nominations.

Ryan Clady is up for Diet Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week while the quarterback he protects, Jay Cutler, is up for Fed Ex Air Player of the Week.

Clady led an offensive line that allowed QB Jay Cutler to pass for 286 yards and two touchdowns, prevented Kansas City from recording a sack and helped Denver total 139 yards rushing in the Broncos’ 24-17 win over the Chiefs. Though this is the first time Clady has been nominated, he is the fourth Bronco to be up for the award after Peyton Hillis, Spencer Larsen and Eddie Royal have all been nominated and won.

No other team in the league has had more than one rookie win the award — the Broncos have three and now potentially four.

Titans running back Chris Johnson, Texans running back Steve Slaton, Cardinals cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart are the other rookies up for the honor.

Cutler completed 32 of 40 passes for 286 yards and two touchdowns in the Broncos’ 24-17 win over the Kansas City Chiefs. Cutler has already won this award twice in 2008, most recently after the Broncos’ win over the Jets.

Youth Always Gives Hope

November 11th, 2008 - 10:09am by jim_saccomanoOther posts by jim_saccomano

The Denver Broncos of 2008 have been hit by injuries like few teams in recent memory.

It has been unusual, to say the least, to watch the number of players on the Broncos’ injured reserve list reach double figures.

But you have a schedule, and you have to keep playing, and every time a player goes down it gives an opportunity to another, and in this case, a younger player.

Denver’s young player’s contributions have been tremendous this year, and couple those efforts with the team’s first place standing in the AFC Western Division and you get bright promise for future seasons.

Wednesday Notes: Back to Business

October 29th, 2008 - 4:16pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by Gray Caldwell

The Broncos got back to the grindstone Wednesday, preparing for their next opponent, and it’s one that will provide some unique challenges.

The Miami Dolphins come to INVESCO Field at Mile High this week, and coming off of two losses before the bye week, the Broncos are getting ready for a battle to get back on the winning track.

There are several interesting storylines leading up to the game, not the least of which involves two prominent figures from the 2009 NFL Draft.

ROOKIES LIVING UP TO BILLING

Sunday’s game features a first-round 2009 NFL Draft pick at left tackle for both teams’ offensive line, and both rookies have started every game for their team this season.

Consider Clady

October 14th, 2008 - 8:09am by jim_saccomanoOther posts by jim_saccomano

When you play the offensive line, anonymity is part of the genetic mix that goes along with the job.

The television announcers and cameras naturally focus on the quarterback and other skill positions, and the defense gets its fair share of attention with sack masters in the line, hard hitting linebackers and ball hawking defensive backs.

Meanwhile, like Old Man River, the offensive line just keeps rolling along, and nobody notices anything until there is a sack or penalty.

We also hear all the time how offensive linemen have to be developed, that it takes two or three years for a draft choice to work his way into the lineup as a productive player.

We know this is true, because that’s how it almost always happens.

The “almost” part is the exception, we have is Ryan Clady.
