Tatum BellStats blather, injury updates, and other thoughts from a quiet Tuesday afternoon at Dove Valley:

Topic 1: Deceptive rankings:

The league rushing tables say that Broncos running back Tatum Bell ranks ninth in the league with 295 yards so far this season. But with the Broncos having their bye week early this year, their players will be at a little bit of a disadvantage when it comes to league rankings.

Right now, Buffalo’s Willis McGahee leads the league with 389 rushing yards. St. Louis’ Stephen Jackson is second with 367 yards, while Atlanta’s Warrick Dunn ranks third with 365. But if the statistics were based off yardage per game, none would be in the league’s top three, and Bell would be tied for second with Kansas City’s Larry Johnson at 98.3 yards per game.

It Must Be Week 1 When …

… There’s one last blast of predictions for the season to come. Today’s entry comes from Shannon Sharpe, who forecasts Cincinnati’s Carson Palmer as the league’s offensive MVP; Carolina’s Julius Peppers for the defensive MVP; Carolina’s DeAngelo Williams and Cleveland’s Kamerion Wimbley as rookies of the year, and Denver-Carolina as his Super Bowl pick (although the former Bronco doesn’t predict a winner). Deconstructing the 53-Man Roster

September 2nd, 2006 - 10:27pm by AndrewOther posts by

The big news of the weekend revolves around the players who didn’t make the final roster.

But what about those who did? Here’s a first breakdown of the Broncos’ 53-man roster.

QUARTERBACKS (2): Jay Cutler (R), Jake Plummer.
Denver released Preston Parsons along with Van Pelt, leaving them with two quarterbacks on the season-opening 53-man roster for the third time in the last four years. The team carried three quarterbacks into the 2004 campaign, but quickly went back to two by moving Matt Mauck back to the practice squad.

RUNNING BACKS/FULLBACKS (5): Mike Bell (R), Tatum Bell, Cedric Cobbs, Kyle Johnson, Cecil Sapp.
Johnson has made the roster as a full-time fullback in each of the last three seasons, but once again the Broncos have at least one fullback who can move over to tailback in Sapp. Other fullbacks on the 53-man roster who could swing over to the other backfield slot in recent years include Mike Anderson (2002, 2003) and Reuben Droughns (2002, 2003, 2004) … Tatum Bell is the only one of the Broncos’ three running backs to have started in the NFL, but his starting experience is limited to the regular-season finale at San Diego last year … Tatum Bell has 1,317 rushing yards in the NFL; Cobbs has 50, Mike Bell, of course, has none as a rookie.
