Getting My Stamina Back

September 25th, 2008 - 5:59pm by Ryan TorainOther posts by

Alright, I’ve got some big news this week:

I started lifting weights with my left arm. I’ve started conditioning and running full speed now, too — I don’t have to be on the treadmill all the time. It definitely gives me a lot more to do now that I’m not just lifting weights with one arm. So I’m starting to take big strides just by getting into the swing of things, getting my stamina up.

I’m getting excited. It’s getting closer every week and I can’t wait to get out there. I can’t wait to start practicing. Then when I step on that game field, it’s going to be something I ain’t never felt before. It’s the NFL, I haven’t played in a game yet, I missed all the preseason games. I’ve just been out here watching. I’ve got a whole bunch of energy balled up and ready to explode, for real. I just can’t wait to get out there.

P.M. Blog: Day 12

August 6th, 2008 - 5:42pm by Adam ZinserOther posts by

Though the sun broke through for most of the afternoon practice, it was definitely much cooler than this morning’s session, and thankfully, the dark clouds heading this way held off just long enough for the team to wrap things up and head inside.

ATTENDANCE REPORT: Hamza Abdullah, Champ Bailey, Peyton Hillis, Chad Mustard, Tom Nalen and Dewayne Robertson all watched from the sidelines with their various injuries/soreness. Abdullah was doing some calisthenics with out on the field to help rehab his groin before practice began. One end of a large elastic band was wrapped around his waist with the other end tied to one of the goal posts. He high-stepped sideways until the band became fully extended and taught, then would move back towards the goal post.

A.M. Blog: Day 12

August 6th, 2008 - 11:52am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

On a day that featured a lot of playmaking from young guys and veterans alike, the Broncos got some bad news. During offensive versus defensive drills focusing on running plays, rookie Ryan Torain sprinted to the right and fell awkwardly with defenders on top of him. He broke a bone in the upper part of his elbow, and Head Coach Mike Shanahan said he expects him to be out 6 to 8 weeks. Torain will undergo an MRI today and Shanahan said they’ll wait to see if there’s ligament damage.

“That’s football,” Shanahan said. “You’re going to lose guys, there’s nothing you can do about it. Except get better.”

In that light, here are some quick hits from an otherwise very exciting practice.

ATTENDANCE REPORT: Hamza Abdullah sat out of practice with a groin…Champ Bailey watched from the sidelines as well with a right hamstring…Peyton Hillis was out of pads with a left hamstring…Chad Mustard didn’t participate with a right hamstring…Tom Nalen observed practice with a left knee…Dewayne Robertson was out of pads as well with a left knee.

A.M. Blog: Day 11

August 5th, 2008 - 12:04pm by Adam ZinserOther posts by

After a record-setting streak of days with the temperature above 90 degrees, Tuesday morning brought a much welcomed cool front. When I heard over the radio on the way to Dove Valley that the high was predicted to be 82 degrees, I laughed.

Thankfully, they were right. The players (and I) enjoyed temperatures in the low 70s throughout the morning camp session. And now for quick hits from practice.

ATTENDANCE REPORT: Hamza Abdullah remained on the sideline, nursing his strained groin. Peyton Hillis, after making it back onto the field yesterday morning, sat out again. Chad Mustard and Tom Nalen remain out with a right hamstring and left knee, respectively. Montrae Holland continues to work on his own, though he later came out and watched from the sidelines. He looks slimmer to me.

Champ Bailey also missed practice with a sore right hamstring. Bailey spent his time watching from the sidelines with teammates or on the field talking with Head Coach Mike Shanahan. But don’t worry Broncos Country, Shanahan quickly pointed out that No. 24 is a quick healer.

A.M. Blog: Day 5

July 29th, 2008 - 10:55am by Adam ZinserOther posts by

Training camp continues on day five at Dove Valley, and on the verge of a record-setting heat wave, the offense got back into gear Tuesday. It seemed as if the defense had the offense all dialed in yesterday, but today the men in blue redeemed themselves and appeared to be firing on all cylinders.

ATTENDANCE REPORT: Montrae Holland worked out on a side field with Strength and Conditioning Coach Rich Tuten for the morning session…Peyton Hillis watched from the sidelines for a second day with a left hamstring injury, but he was a practice-time decision, signaling he could return soon…Chad Mustard remains sidelined with his right hamstring injury…Tom Nalen sat out the morning session in an effort to give his surgically repaired knee some rest.

POSTURING FOR POSITION: With Nalen out, Casey Wiegmann worked at center with the first team.

At defensive end, Tim Crowder rotated in with the ones. Alvin McKinley also saw action on the interior of the line with the first unit.

Nate Jackson had a strong showing at tight end, working with the first unit opposite Tony Scheffler.

Clady In The Fold

July 25th, 2008 - 6:43am by Jake GrilleyOther posts by

The Broncos have only had one training camp holdout in the last 20 seasons and first-round draft pick Ryan Clady wasn’t about to break that streak.

Just hours before training camp is set to get underway the team announced that it has come to terms with the 6-foot-6, 325-pound left tackle out of Boise State.

Clady started 37 of his 39 career games during his collegiate career where he earned first-team All-Western Athletic Conference honors during his final two seasons.

The team expects big things out their first-rounder, he is expected to start at left tackle in 2008.

Royal On Board

July 24th, 2008 - 3:30pm by Adam ZinserOther posts by

Eight down, one to go.

The team signed second-rounder Eddie Royal to a contract this morning, leaving only first-rounder Ryan Clady left to sign before training camp begins tomorrow morning.

Royal has impressed his coaches and his quarterback during minicamp, working his way into the receiver rotation, but he should also make an immediate impact in the return game.

He left his mark on his alma mater of Virginia Tech by re-writing the record books. Over the course of his four years in Blacksburg, he became the Hokies all-time leader in all-purpose yards with 4,686, a total that includes an ACC-record 1,296 punt return yards along with 1,386 kickoff return yards.

He accounted for 17 total scores — catching 12, returning punts for three, rushing for one and even throwing one as well.

Fourth-rounder Williams Signs

July 22nd, 2008 - 1:27pm by Adam ZinserOther posts by

And the signings just keep on coming.

The team on Tuesday signed cornerback Jack Williams, a fourth-round selection from Kent State, with terms of the deal undisclosed.

With his physical playing style, 4.32 speed, 35.5 vertical, good hands and ball-hawking skills, he has the tools to become a solid player. And now with his rookie contract in hand, he can continue his progress when training camp begins Friday.

Two days remain until players report for training camp, and the Broncos have just two rookies left to ink.

Next up on the list: Ryan Clady and Eddie Royal.
