Elway on RBs: ‘We’ll See What Happens in the Draft’

April 23rd, 2013 - 1:04pm by Andrew MasonOther posts by

When Knowshon Moreno reeled off back-to-back 100-yard games against the Raiders and Ravens last December, it seemed that Willis McGahee, a Pro Bowler just a year earlier, had become a forgotten man among observers while he recovered from a knee injury suffered in a Week 11 win over San Diego.

But in the Broncos’ offices, McGahee was very much in their plans. Had Denver defeated Baltimore in the divisional round, McGahee would have been eligible to come off of injured reserve the following week, having received the one designated-to-return exemption teams were allowed last year. And even though Moreno answered questions about his durability and consistency in his six-game starting stint, he hobbled off the field in the playoff loss with an knee injury.

McGahee never had the chance to return, but as the Broncos look at their pre-draft roster, the 31-year-old running back has a prominent place.

“Well, with where we are right now, with (Willis) McGahee, he is that big back for us right now,” Elway said. “But, I think that if you look at what we have with Ronnie Hillman, he is that 190-pounder, that change-of-pace-type guy.”

Hillman Finds Paydirt

November 13th, 2012 - 8:35am by Tyler EverettOther posts by

After sitting out the first two weeks of the season, rookie running back Ronnie Hillman has come on strong in recent weeks.

Two games after picking up a career-high 86 yards rushing on 14 carries against New Orleans, Hillman found the end zone for his first NFL touchdown late in Sunday’s 36-14 win over the Panthers.

With Denver facing 1st-and-goal from the Carolina 5-yard line after a long pass from quarterback Peyton Manning to wide receiver Demaryius Thomas, Hillman used his speed to get to the corner, beating the defense around left end for his first career touchdown.

His mindset during the carry was simple.

“All that was going through my head was just score,” Hillman said. “I only got a couple opportunities like that, so I think I’ve got to get in the end zone.”

Broncos Getting Healthy

August 20th, 2012 - 12:09pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

Monday’s practice session brought some good news for the Broncos on the injury front.

Safety Quinton Carter was back on the practice field for the first time since injuring his hamstring and knee all the way back on July 27, the second day of training camp. He participated in individual drills at the start of practice.

Also back were cornerback Tracy Porter, who missed most of last week’s practices due to an illness, linebacker Danny Trevathan — his first practice since injuring his ankle in the team’s preseason opener at Chicago on Aug. 9 — and running back Ronnie Hillman, who hasn’t played in either of the team’s preseason games with a hamstring injury.

Early in team drills, Hillman made a couple of long catch-and-run plays out of the backfield.

Linebacker Keith Brooking and safety Jim Leonhard, who are not participating in Monday’s practice, were on the field, working off to the side with Head Athletic Trainer Luke Richesson.

We’ll have plenty more from practice, including the full roll call, after the session concludes.

Hillman Familiar with Fox

May 11th, 2012 - 3:18pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

Running back Ronnie Hillman has known Head Coach John Fox for years.

Sort of.

Fox played two seasons as a defensive back for San Diego State — where Hillman attended — before serving a year on the Aztecs coaching staff as a graduate assistant.

There’s a picture commemorating Fox’s time with his alma mater — right by the elevator — and Hillman saw it daily during his time at the school.

“He had actually met me before he’d met me,” Fox laughed.

Hillman said it was interesting to meet his head coach after seeing his picture every day for two-and-a-half years.

“He looks a little younger in (the photo),” he joked.

McGahee Ready to Run

May 2nd, 2012 - 6:27pm by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

Fresh off a record-breaking season on the ground in 2011, running back Willis McGahee is ready to hit the ground running with the team’s new-look offense in 2012.

The biggest change to that unit is the newly-signed four-time NFL MVP quarterback that will be under center when Denver opens its season against Pittsburgh on Sunday, Sept. 9.

“Who wouldn’t be happy to play with Peyton Manning?” McGahee said. “He’s arguably the best quarterback there is. I was ecstatic.”

McGahee said he’s excited to join forces with the player that fellow former Raven Justin Bannan called “The Baltimore Killer” for his success against the Ravens.

“It feels great, because we’re actually playing Baltimore, so I guess he can be The Baltimore Killer all he wants,” McGahee said. “I’m happy. I can’t complain. It’s great to have Peyton on our team.”

Hillman Ready to Learn

April 27th, 2012 - 8:38pm by Kenny LeganOther posts by

After selecting a 6-foot-7 quarterback, the Broncos went to the other end of the spectrum with their next pick, grabbing 5-foot-10 running back Ronnie Hillman.

Hillman said he hopes to come in and use his diverse skill set to carve a niche on the team.

“I’m just going to come in and try to win. That’s all I can do,” Hillman said. “I’m just bringing my versatility to the team and be able to create more offense and come in and learn from the vets.”

Hillman, who was once coached by Snoop Dogg as a youth football player, left San Diego State after his redshirt sophomore season as he works towards achieving his lifelong dream.

“I’m just excited. It’s been my dream to play in the NFL for a while,” Hillman said. “I’m just thankful.”
