Gradishar to Announce Second-Day Draft Picks

April 18th, 2013 - 9:58am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

In 2011, Shannon Sharpe did it. In 2012, it was Terrell Davis.

Now, for the 2013 NFL Draft, it’s Randy Gradishar’s turn.

On Friday, April 26, Gradishar will announce the Broncos’ second- and third-round picks live from Radio City Music Hall. The Broncos Ring of Famer was selected as one of 32 “NFL Greats” to participate in the draft — continuing the program that began in 2011.

This year’s class of 32 players includes six Pro Football Hall of Famers, and many argue that Gradishar should be in Canton sooner rather than later.

Here are just a handful of notes on one of the key pieces of the Orange Crush defense, compiled by Erich Schubert:

In 145 career regular-season contests (134 starts) over 10 seasons, Gradishar totaled 2,049 tackles—an average of 205 tackles per season—and set a franchise record by leading the club in that category for nine consecutive years (1975-83). He also accounted for 33 turnovers (20 INTs, 13 FR) during his career to tie for the fourth most by an NFL linebacker during that span.

In addition to his seven Pro Bowl selections, Gradishar is the only Bronco to be named NFL Defensive Player of the Year, earning the honor in 1978 after accumulating 286 tackles (190 solo), four interceptions and two fumble recoveries. He helped the franchise make its first four playoff appearances (1977-79, ’83) while leading Denver to consecutive division titles (1977-78) and an appearance in Super Bowl XII during the 1977 season.

Currently a Senior Committee candidate for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Gradishar was a finalist for the Hall of Fame in 2003 and ’08 and a semifinalist from 2005-07. During his 10-year career, his seven Pro Bowls were surpassed only by Hall of Fame linebacker Jack Lambert.

Additionally, his 145 consecutive regular-season games played from 1974-83 were matched only by Hall of Fame linebacker Ted Hendricks.

Broncos Considered Among Most Valuable

March 17th, 2010 - 9:22am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

Terrell Davis. Shannon Sharpe. Steve Atwater. Randy Gradishar. Tom Jackson. Karl Mecklenburg. Tom Nalen. Louis Wright. Lyle Alzado. Rick Upchurch.

They are some of the best players to ever don a Broncos uniform. None were picked higher than the 14th overall selection in the NFL draft, and one was picked as late as the 310th overall selection in the 12th round.

Not coincidentally, they are all up for consideration to be named one of the 75 Most Valuable Draft Picks in league history.

Fans can vote on NFL.com now — voting ends April 18 — choosing between pairs of players randomly generated from a list of 320 all-time most valuable draft picks as chosen by NFL.com editors. After choosing the winners of 30 random matchups, fans can begin to build their own Top 10 list, and continue voting from there to alter their top 10.

Broncos Could Be in Good Hall Era

February 7th, 2008 - 9:03am by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

One of the most gratifying moments of Super Bowl week for fans of the Denver Broncos was the announcement that tackle Gary Zimmerman had been selected for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Zim is absolutely one of the greatest offensive linemen in pro football history, as his selection to the all-decade teams of both the 1980′s and the 1990′s clearly attests.

He had to wait a couple of years longer even than he should have, but there is no question that the voters got it right in naming him to the game’s most hallowed halls.

As great as the news was about Zimmerman, it was just as disappointing that all-time great Randy Gradishar did not get selected.

Super Bowl/Hall of Fame

Well I’ve been eating crow all week and finally decided to admit it. The New York Giants brought it and were the better team by far. I was amazed how flat the Patriots were and we talked about the Super Power all year long and BOOM!!! — they explode.

I can’t understand how you play so emotionless in a Super Bowl. I’m not a Giants fan by any means for selfish reasons, they cost me a World Championship ring and we ran out of time in Super Bowl XXI, that’s all. :o )

Ahhhhh, they were the better team that day too and Phil Simms made a career day out of one game. Can you tell I’m still bitter, yep!!

Hall of Fame … Is this The Day?

Gradishar and Zimmerman

As Friday night became Saturday at the homestead, TBS began airing Groundhog Day. In addition to being arguably the high point of the Harold Ramis-Bill Murray partnership — this was, after all, the film that combined subversiveness, compassion, surrealism and existentialism — its plot also gave me a humbling second thought about today’s Pro Football Hall of Fame possibilities for Randy Gradishar and Gary Zimmerman.

After all, the film Groundhog Day involves enduring the same set of circumstances with scarcely a hint of change. Only when Murray’s character, Phil Connors, learns how to enact change upon his static realm does he finagle a way out of his permament loop.

Three Broncos on Hall of Fame Ballot

December 4th, 2007 - 3:12pm by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

Davis, Gradishar and Zimmerman

By now just about everyone is aware that aside from John Elway — who was an obvious choice and who played for the Denver Broncos for the entirety of his 16-year NFL career — only two other players with Bronco ties are in the Hall of Fame.

Those would be running back Tony Dorsett — clearly in for his play with the Dallas Cowboys — and cornerback Willie Brown, who played the most famous part of his career with the Oakland Raiders, although he was also an All-AFL corner while with the Broncos.

After 30 years in the NFL I feel like I have been teased by the Hall of Fame voters more often than Charlie Brown by Lucy and her football in the Peanuts cartoon.

Frontier Days Follow-Up — Pics Inside!

July 24th, 2007 - 3:26pm by MilesOther posts by

Like I said, we went up to Cheyenne Frontier Days on Saturday and I had a blast.  What a great event.  The Broncos fans up there don’t get to see us as much as some of you so they were totally psyched.

We did a signing, then hung out in the VIP tent (that’s how I roll!) then I messed around with the crowd at the rodeo and did a little slapstick with rodeo clowns.  This, of course, was after we made our Grand Entrance.  It was a little toasty, but the misters and a little help from fans kept me from foaming up too much.  All in all it was a great day.

Thanks to all the people from Cheyenne Frontier Days.  They really took care of us.  And thanks to all the fans that showed up, Cheyenne is DEFINITELY Broncos Country!

Hall Finalists: Zim, but Not T.D. or Gradishar

January 10th, 2007 - 1:19pm by AndrewOther posts by

The lamentable underrepresentation of the Broncos in the sport’s shrine could be somewhat alleviated later this year.

Gary Zimmerman will be the lone Bronco up for discussion when the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s board of selectors meets the day before Super Bowl XLI to decide this year’s enshrinees.

Zimmerman is part of a group that does not include Randy Gradishar and Terrell Davis, both of whom were eliminated as the group of 25 semifinalists was whittled down to 17 finalists as announced today in Canton, Ohio.

Davis was in his first year of eligibility.

Gradishar has been eligible for 17 years, but has only been a finalist once — in 2003, when he and Zimmerman became the first to be finalists based in large part on their careers as Broncos. (Hall of Famers Willie Brown and Tony Dorsett both played in Denver, but spent the bulk of their standout days in Oakland and Dallas, respectively).

For Zimmerman, this is his fourth time on the finalist list. In addition to his 2003 finalist status, he was also among the group in 2004 and 2006. He is, at present, the only Hall-eligible player to be named to two All-Decade teams and not be among the men honored with a bust in the museum, which was established in 1963.

Seven Broncos were on the list of preliminary nominees: Steve Atwater, Davis, Gradishar, Karl Mecklenburg, Dan Reeves, Louis Wright and Zimmerman. Atwater, Mecklenburg, Reeves and Wright were trimmed from the list when it was narrowed to 25 semifinalists in November.

So what do you think? What other Broncos deserve the proper due in Canton? Discuss below …
