Broncos vs. Saints: Quotables

HEAD COACH JOHN FOX

On his thoughts on the game
“I’d say probably without looking at the tape yet, I thought we played 60 minutes. We started a little faster as a football team than we have to date. All in all, probably at this point without seeing the tape, I’d say, ‘Yes.’”

On CB Champ Bailey’s performance
“We’ve matched up Champ quite a bit thus far in this season and even last season for that matter. Champ wasn’t in on that last drive. We wanted to keep him out of there but all in all, he kind of gets that draw week in and week out.”
On holding a lead the whole game

On playing with a lead
“It’s a lot more fun than the alternative, that’s for sure. We really hadn’t had that much in the first half this season. We had a slight lead in the Oakland game here last home game, but other than that, we hadn’t seen that very much. It’s something we were going to try to do. The only thing, as a tribute to those guys in that locker room, is we’re trying to put wins together and this was our first time this season that we’ve got back-to-back wins.”

HEAD COACH JOHN FOX

On what he said at halftime
“There were no mystery words of wisdom at halftime. I think it was just guys knew how poorly we played in the first half and made a decision to play better in the second half, and they did.”

On if he’s been a part of a game like this

“Yeah, been a part of a few of them. But, I’m not sure, I’d have to look back. That was as good of a second half of football as I’ve been a part of.”

On going into the bye on a win
“We can only control the next one and this was the one that was real big for us because it was against a division opponent. You’re doing everything you can to win your division, so anytime you go against a division opponent, that’s key. They were a game ahead of us and we made up a little ground at this point.”

On the mindset at halftime
“I was talking with somebody going into the locker room at halftime and when you looked at it, they had about 150 yards of total offense and it was 24-0. We presented that to the football team. Defensively, we thought we could hang in there, we just couldn’t give them short fields and turn the ball over. On top of it, now it can be our turn to create turnovers as well. We stepped it up and I think we grew a little bit.”

On the Carter fumble recovery touchdown
“I think what really kind of started us off was to be able to go down the field to start the third quarter. I thought Peyton and the offense did an outstanding job and Mike McCoy and his offensive staff. Even in the first half when we were down 10 with the two early miscues in the kicking game, I still felt confident that we could level the playing field as we went. It was just a great effort on our guys’ part to keep fighting and we’ve had some practice at that.”

QUARTERBACK PEYTON MANNING

On whether the team’s previous comeback efforts helped tonight
“I think offensively, it certainly did. I think guys understand from the past few weeks that we can score quickly. We are able to come back, it’s just a matter of how far we can come back, how big of a hole are we in. Disappointing start – I thought we really had a good plan and were really determined to get off to a better start on the road in the division. We just had some things that we didn’t expect to go our way and just had a hard time overcoming them in the first half. I thought the second half, everybody was accountable and was professional. We got back to the plan. We had 30 minutes and thought it was important to get off to a good start with that first drive. I thought that was really key, putting that drive together and hitting DT on that touchdown. That sure set the tempo for the second half.”

On Patriots QB Tom Brady’s no-huddle offense
“He’s extremely smart. I think he knows football. I think our guy did an outstanding job today as well. He’s a great player. He’s been doing it for quite some time at a high level. He’s definitely a hard-core player to defend against.”

On all three losses having a late-game rally
“We’re kind of feeling ourselves through both defensively and offensively. Three of those teams that beat us have been doing it together for some time and they’re obviously good football teams if you just look at the record. It’s just what it is. We’ve got to get better. That’s the challenge. There’s a lot of tough guys in that locker room. There’s no quit in them. They hung in there all 60 minutes and we just came up short again. We’ve got to get out of that.”

On injuries
“Update on the injuries: [CB] Tracy Porter, knee. [WR Matthew] Willis, hamstring. [SLB] Nate Irving, concussion. [RB] Willis McGahee, rib. [TE] Jacob Tamme, groin. He did come back to the game.”

On being one third-down stop away from getting the ball back for the second week in a row
“It was the second week in a row we lost by six points. It’s the second week in a row we started very slowly – different side of the ball this time.”

On it being frustrating that the Broncos still had a chance to win
“It’s just frustrating losing. I think you work too hard. You put too much into these games. Those players in that locker room, all the staff, coaches… We just have to put 60 minutes together and I don’t know that we… The closest we got was in our opener (vs. Pittsburgh). Those are two good football teams. That was a very good football game today as witnessed by their record. You can’t dig yourself that deep in the hole in the case of the last two games.”

Quarterback Peyton Manning

On his comfort level“Well, I think you try to learn something from each game. You know, it is hard to look past a loss, but you certainly study yourself during the week. And at least we get back to a little bit of a normal routine, from a week’s standpoint—[we’ll] be able to study this tape and study what it is we are doing wrong and study anything we are doing well and try to build off that. I think it is still probably a process. But it is hard to think about anything really besides losing two games in a row in a tough fashion.”

On what went wrong in the first half
“Yeah, it is hard to pinpoint. We will get a good luck at the film and see what it is. [I] certainly give Houston credit, but [that’s] not a team you want to get in to a lot of third-and-longs. I don’t know how many we had, but we weren’t very good early on third downs. [We were] probably a little bit better late there in the fourth quarter—got to be able to convert from third downs. A lot of time third-down conversions—if you can follow it—you can kind of convert it on actually first or second downs, if you do a better job staying at third-and-manageable. It seems like we had a few more third-and-longs today, and that is kind of playing into Houston’s hands.”

On the late-game firepower the last two weeks
“Yeah, certainly we are 1-2, and that is what you look at. Like I said: when you study the tape, one of the first things you study is what you are doing wrong. Why are we having to come back? We are not doing our jobs well enough as a team to get ourselves in a hole against two good football teams two weeks in a row. I certainly appreciate the guys competing, the guys fighting, and we’ve been knocking on the door there at the end. Like I said: it would be nice to get off to a better start. If you don’t, though—sometimes it happens—you still can find a way to win. Hopefully with that kind of effort … we can win a game with that kind of effort sometime later on in the season.”

Cornerback Champ Bailey

On coming up short for the second straight game
“We’ve got to start faster. I felt like the first five minutes, we were good. Then all of a sudden, they throw two balls over our head. We can’t live with that.”

On how Houston was able to convert big plays
“I honestly don’t know, exactly. It’s one of those things as a corner you just don’t want to do, is give up a deep play. They could throw 100 comebacks and curls, but don’t give up the deep one. It’s tough out there. It is what it is. We’ve got to learn from it and try to get better.”

On a key catch by WR Andre Johnson that extended a late Houston drive
“I was right there. It’s just two good players making plays. His quarterback put it right where I couldn’t get it, so I’ve got to give him a lot of credit. Once I started following [Johnson] around, he didn’t have a catch in crunch time. He made it happen. I’ve got to give him a lot of credit for that.”

Tight end Joel Dreessen

On the reason for the Broncos’ slow starts offensively
“I don’t know. We’re just struggling to find a little bit of a rhythm right now. I thought we really were going to find, some confidence, especially when we got the safety and got the ball back and drove down there. We went up 5-0, but we’ve got to find ways to do better than that.”

On the adjustments the offense made in the fourth quarter
“It’s tough to say without looking at the film, but all I can do is control what I can control, and I’ve got to get better. I’ve got to get better and getting open. I’ve got to get better at blocking so we can start faster. Everyone in this locker room just has to be concerned with how they can find a way to get better personally.”

Linebacker Wesley Woodyard

On if he thought he might score on his interception return
“I did. I joked the whole week with the guys like, ‘Man, if I ever get the ball, I wasn’t going to get touched.’ I saw the end zone so it felt like it was 200 yards away.”

On getting down early in the game
“We started off slow and can’t do that, especially with a good team. They came out and ran the ball really well the first half. In order to be a really good team in the NFL and a team that is solid week in and week out, we have to start fast.”

On the loss
“A loss is always frustrating, especially when we were right there in it at the end. We know we should have won that game so we have to continue to play fast, and come out against Oakland because they are going to be ready. They don’t care how we start; they are going to be ready to play.”

Wide receiver Brandon Stokely

On his advice to the younger WR’s
“You just keep on plugging away, keep on working hard. It is the third week of the season and nothing is written in stone yet. We still have the rest of the season in front of us so learn from this, put it behind us, and get to work next week.”

On the second half
“You feel like you have some momentum for the first time. The defense stepped up and we were able to get some things going but it was too late.”

On the Broncos fourth-quarter charge
“It doesn’t count. In the end, it is a loss. You play to win and we haven’t done that in the last two weeks so it is disappointing.”

Head Coach John Fox

On QB Peyton Manning’s three first-quarter interceptions
“Again, you have to remember that Peyton Manning is a new quarterback in our system. He is adjusting to teammates, adjusting to the things we’re doing. It’s not going to happen overnight. I’ll just leave it at that. He’s just going to get better. I think we learned a lot about our football team tonight. We realized that you can’t be minus four in the turnover ratio if you expect to win – especially against a good football team like Atlanta at their place.”

On the defense keeping the team in the game early
“I thought our guys battled. As I told them in there, it didn’t start nearly as well as we’d expect it, yet we still battled and had an opportunity to win the game – just came up a little bit short.”

On positives from the game
“I thought there were some good things in the game. I know losing is never really an easy pill to swallow – obviously, this wasn’t an easy pill – but I thought there were things that were positive. I thought our run defense was a little bit better. I thought we ran the ball pretty efficiently. We got close, even being minus four. They got their hands on balls, they caught them. We got our hands on balls, didn’t catch them. Even at the end with the fumble, we didn’t get it. Sometimes you have days like that. We can learn from it. We have to do a better job of coaching and our players will do a better job of playing.”

Quarterback Peyton Manning

On the interceptions
“Disappointing start. Any time you come on the road and throw three interceptions in the first quarter, it really puts the team in a hole. It put the defense in a hole and gave Atlanta some great field position that they took advantage of. It’s disappointing. Really a tough start. I won’t make any excuses for three poor decisions, three throws into coverage and just have to be able to eliminate those. Usually when you turn the ball over four times you don’t have a chance to even win the game. So, I thought that we did fight back and had a chance there at the end. But, in the end I put our team in too far of a hole.”

Head Coach John Fox

On QB Peyton Manning’s touchdown drives
“It was helpful that he only had it for about 36 seconds but we scored so that was the good news. I think that’s something that we’ll get better at. Part of that issue is we let them possess the ball, in particular on third down conversions, defensively. In a first game like that, [Steelers QB] Ben Roethlisberger’s a tough guy to play against because he does extend plays and he did and we had about three explosives there in that second quarter, the touchdown before half. Like I said, it’s a good football team that we played tonight and we were fortunate to come out with a nice win.”

On how QB Peyton Manning looked in his first real game this season
“He’s a great player. A lot’s been made of the injury and those types of things but we’re just glad he’s on our team.”

On the defensive effort, particularly with CB Tracy Porter
“He’s a guy that we acquired from New Orleans in the offseason. Guy’s had an excellent training camp for us. That was definitely a huge play. Probably the play of the game, being up only six, for him to make that play then was huge.”

Head Coach John Fox

On the game
“We didn’t play any of our starters and then some. I think we had 25 guys that did not play. We wanted to look at our down at the bottom part of the roster. I thought some guys helped themselves and I thought we made some improvement. We’ve struggled over the last couple of weeks in the second halves of the preseason games. We’ll watch the tape – we have a lot of tough decisions. Tomorrow is never a fun day.”

On RB Knowshon Moreno
“He played well. He’s a guy that’s made steady improvement in each of the games, which is a credit to him, Eric Studesville, his coach, Greek, his training staff. They brought him back from his ACL very well and I think we saw evidence of that.”
On whether Moreno can make the team without playing special teams
“I keep those matters more inside the club, but those are things we discuss when we make decisions.”

On QB Caleb Hanie
“I think Caleb stepped in last week and played very well. Without looking at the tape and all the checks and going over all the stuff, I thought it was adequate, yes.”
On whether the game would have gone to OT if Weber didn’t complete the pass to Orton
“That’s not reality. I don’t know (laughing). Not reality, so at the end of the day, I was glad it went the way it did.”

On Omar Bolden’s kick return touchdown
“It was big, I think Omar is a guy that had a couple injuries early in camp. He’s gotten more playing time as we’ve gone through these last three preseason games. Again, return capability is something that we’re definitely looking for and looking for depth in that position. It was a heck of a return. It’s nice to see a kid come home and be able to do something like that.”

On the No. 1 offense
“I was pleased with our offense. I thought we were pretty crisp. On the one drive, on the touchdown drive, I thought a very critical play was (WR) Brandon Stokley made a great grab on third down to keep possession. I’m never really happy losing ever, but I thought our first looked pretty sharp and I think we made great strides this week.”

On QB Peyton Manning
“I’ve seen steady improvements as he’s gotten here and as a tribute to him, his work ethic, I think the offensive coaches, his offensive teammates, for being a first-year guy… He’s not a young player by any stretch, but to come in and learn an offense, execute an offense with the precision he is pretty good.”

On starters playing at Arizona
“It’ll be a game-time decision. We’ll talk about it as a staff, we’ll see the health of our football team, go into greater detail of the performance of our football team [and] we’ll make that judgment moving forward.”

On QB Peyton Manning’s performance
“I was pretty pleased with the first half. Other than the 0-3 turnover margin, I thought we did pretty good to take the lead 10-9 before the half. You would have liked it to be better as far as the points because we dropped a couple points off with filed position. Again, something to build on and something to get better from.”

On contemplating going on fourth down before the end of the half
“We thought about it but in these games, kind of based on first, you like to have the lead and you like to win when your ones are out there so the more sure thing was the field goal.”

On the defense in the first half
“I thought we were a little shoddier. We came in the game a little light on defense as well and that kind of showed as the game progressed but I think it’s fairly evident we have a lot of work to do in that area.”

On injuries during the game
“Injuries from the game: Danny Trevathan had an ankle sprain, Chris Gronkowski had a groin pull, Chris Clark as well had a groin pull. All three of those left the game. Not serious, but it’s something we’ll manage moving forward.”

On Peyton Manning’s performance
“I thought it was good. It was a very good first outing. There were actually some bright spots all through the offense, defense and kicking game. For a guy that hasn’t played in a season, had some medical issues, I think he’s done outstanding, which you can expect from him. I thought it was very good.”

On Manning’s intercepted pass aimed at Brandon Stokley
“The ball got popped up a little bit, flopped around and their guy made a good play on it. Those things happen. I thought we rebounded pretty well. There were a couple turnovers in the game, probably a few more penalties than either team would like, but very typical of a first preseason game.”

On Manning’s third-down conversion to Eric Decker
“He’s going to continue to improve. So hopefully that’s the whole challenge of our team. It’s a good first start, a good first outing. It’s what we do from it from here on that’s going to count.”
