Working Toward Ultimate Goal

August 23rd, 2012 - 5:10pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

A year after an AFC West championship and a win in the Wild Card Round of the AFC Playoffs, expectations were already high for the Broncos.

They only got higher with a free agency class that included four-time NFL MVP Peyton Manning.

But as far as Head Coach John Fox is concerned, he’ll let all the bold predictions come from outside the building.

“At the end of the day, I’ve been of the school (of thought) of understate, overproduce,” Fox said. “We’re obviously very pleased to have Peyton, yet we’re still trying to get ready as a football team, and we’re definitely not there yet.”

At the same time, Manning said the Broncos’ focus from the first day of offseason conditioning is on one thing — the Super Bowl.

“That’s our goal as a team every day,” Manning said. “That’s why we’re working hard, that’s why we pushed through two-a-days, that’s why we’ll be lifting weights here in 10 minutes, and trying to get better.”

Manning has reached that goal twice in his career, winning Super Bowl XLI against the Chicago Bears.

Now in his 15th NFL season, the quarterback’s desire to get to the top of the league each and every year hasn’t waned.

“I really have tried to play with a sense of urgency since I’ve been 22 years old,” he said. “I think it’s only fair to the players on that current team that you give your very best. We all know that there’s not many players — the same players aren’t on the team in 2012 as they are in 2013, so it’s only fair to the people here that you’re giving your best effort in trying to have a sense of urgency, in trying to win now.”

But the next task ahead of the Broncos is the third game of the preseason, likely the starters’ final tune-up before the regular season begins. And Manning echoed Fox’s sentiment — the team still has work to do.

“There is a lot of time, and a lot of things are going to happen, between now and when the Super Bowl is played,” Manning said. “Our goal right now is to get better this week, play well against San Francisco, and try to beat Pittsburgh (in the regular-season opener).”

Preseason Week 3: Thursday Practice Blog

August 23rd, 2012 - 1:13pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

The Broncos were back in full pads for Thursday’s practice, and two more players returned to action.

ROLL CALL

Wide receiver Andre Caldwell and linebacker Nate Irving, both of whom suffered rib injuries against the Seattle Seahawks, were back on the practice field in full pads on Thursday.

Defensive end Jason Hunter (triceps), guard Chris Kuper (forearm), linebacker Keith Brooking (hamstring), linebacker Mike Mohamed (hamstring) and wide receiver Tyler Grisham (knee) did not participate in the session.

Defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson (concussion), “was out here, but he was not full-contact,” Head Coach John Fox said.

Safety Jim Leonhard was not in full pads, but participated in portions of practice. Brooking and Mohamed were on the field in shorts, taking in the session from the sideline.

PLAYMAKERS

  • During one-on-ones between receivers and cornerbacks, Champ Bailey slapped the ball out of Demaryius Thomas’ hands on back-to-back reps to force incompletions in the end zone.
  • Other standouts from the one-on-one session included cornerback Chris Harris, who had a nice pass breakup, cornerback Tracy Porter, who jammed wide receivers Brandon Stokley and Matthew Willis at the line and prevented completions and wide receiver Jason Hill, who caught a couple touchdowns.
  • Defensive end Jeremy Beal notched a sack after fellow defensive lineman Robert Ayers flushed quarterback Brock Osweiler out of the pocket during team drills. Ayers had a sack of his own later in practice.

The Broncos took the field for their first post-training camp practice Monday at 11:10 a.m. In its first practice since Saturday night’s 30-10 loss to Seattle, the team practiced in shorts, jerseys, shells and helmets.

Broncos vs. Seahawks: Second Half Blog

August 27th, 2011 - 8:45pm by Max HensonOther posts by

Q3 15:00: The Seahawks will receive to start the second half.

Q3 14:59: Matt Prater’s kick goes through the end zone and Seattle takes over at the 20. Holding is called on Seattle’s Max Unger after a short first down run. That brings up 1st-and-20 and Forsett runs up the middle for 5 yards. On second down, Tarvaris Jackson goes down again as Von Miller comes off the edge for the sack. On third-and-18, Jackson completes to Mike Williams but its well short of the marker and the punt team comes on. Perrish Cox fields the punt this time and he is brought down at the Denver 15-yard line.

Q3 12:42: Orton’s pass on first down is knocked down at the line. McGahee picks up no gain on second down. On third down, Brandon Lloyd comes up with the catch in traffic for the first, but the wideout is flagged for a delay of game — tossin the ball away from the official. Still first-and-10 for the Broncos though. And on the next play Orton goes deep to a wide open Eddie Royal for a 42-yard reception. Spencer Larsen is called for holding on the ensuing first down. Ball marked on the Seattle 42-yard line. After the penalty, Orton has all day to throw and he finds Daniel Fells wide open and the tight end takes it down to the Seattle 14-yard line.

Preseason Week 3: Friday Practice Blog

August 26th, 2011 - 1:03pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

UPDATED WITH TRANSACTION AT 2:05 P.M. MDT

With a game against the Seattle Seahawks tomorrow, Friday was essentially a “football Saturday” for the Broncos — meaning the practice was a quick walkthrough in preparation for the contest.

With that said, there weren’t a ton of “playmakers” to report from the session in shorts and shells.

ROLL CALL
Brandon Lloyd and Kyle Orton were back participating in practice after missing the end of Thursday’s practice due to a team decision and personal issue, respectively.

Head Coach John Fox confirmed after Thursday’s session that Orton left yesterday’s session early for the birth of his first child.

The newest member of the Broncos family is Olivia Taylor Orton (7 pounds, 18 inches), born at 3 a.m. today.

“That first child is exciting for everybody — man or woman,” Fox said. “It’s a neat thing. He’s very fortunate that everything went well and everybody is healthy.”

David Bruton was back on the field stretching with the team, but did some conditioning sprints for the most part while the rest of the defensive backs ran through drills.
