Broncos at Colts: Pregame Blog

From high up in the Lucas Oil Stadium press box, it’s almost an aerial view of the field. This is easily the highest above the field we’ve been this season, but it should be interesting to watch as plays develop.

It’s a gloomy day in Indianapolis, but you’d never know in the stadium. An announcement was just made that the gates are open, and fans are slowly making their way toward their seats. A few player are already on the field warming up, including Kyle Orton, Marcus Thomas, Darcel McBath, Alphonso Smith and Chris Simms.

Speaking of the gloomy day, normally we would put the weather report here, but obviously with the contest being played in a dome, it won’t affect anything come game time.

We’ll post the inactives as soon as we get them, and Zach Eisendrath is on the field taking pregame pictures as we speak.

Here we are at Arrowhead Stadium for the first road game in the division since Week 6. Does it seem like the Broncos haven’t taken the field in forever to anyone else? Thanksgiving seems like a long time ago, so I’m sure there are some anxious Broncos fans ready to see the team back in action.

First things first, we would like to express our condolences to the family of Tim McKernan, who passed away at 69 on Friday. McKernan was one of the most recognizable fans in the NFL — you might remember him better as “Barrel Man.” He retired the Barrel after the 2007 season, but his presence was still felt at INVESCO Field at Mile High. His first barrel was on exhibit at the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He will be missed not only in Denver, but throughout the NFL. Take a moment to remember a legendary member of Broncos Country today.

We escaped Denver before the snow really set in — and now it’s about a 40-degree difference here in sunny Washington, D.C.

Speaking of weather, here’s the official weather report for today’s game against the Redskins:

Broncos at Redskins Weather Report

11:29 a.m. EST: Kyle Sonneman has just headed down to the field to snag some pictures of warmups from Chris Gentilviso. Not too many Broncos on the field at the moment — a few have gone back into the locker room — but Eddie Royal is on the field running routes, and David Bruton and Darcel McBath are throwing the ball back and forth.

Brandon Marshall is pacing the field listening to music, and D.J. Williams is getting loose as well.

Greetings from INVESCO Field at Mile High where the Broncos (6-1) take on the defending Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers (5-2) on Monday Night Football.

Tonight’s AFC battle between the Broncos and Steelers marks the first Monday Night Football matchup between the two club’s in over 23 years. In fact, the last time the two squads faced off on Monday Night Football was on Sept. 15, 1986.

Currently, conditions are gorgeous. There is not a cloud in sight and temperatures are in the Mid-50s. Temperatures, however, are expected to drop by kickoff of tonight’s game.

Here is a full weather report for the contest:

Here we are in the press box at M&T Bank Stadium for just the second 1 p.m. Eastern kickoff of the season — the first was the season opener in Cincinnati. Hope you all remembered to set your clocks back an hour last night. It took a minute to figure out what time to set the alarm for last night, what with it already being two hours earlier than Denver time, then losing another hour.

It’s a little rainy here in Baltimore, though the precipitation seems to have stopped falling for the moment. Here’s the weather report for today’s game:

Broncos at Ravens Weather Report

A few players are already on the field warming up — including Mario Haggan, Robert Ayers, Chris Simms, Kyle Orton, Tom Brandstater, Lonie Paxton and Brandon Stokley.

Sunny day here in San Diego, and we’re packed into the press box at Qualcomm Stadium. It’s an open-air press box, so it’s always fun to be able to soak in the full atmosphere of the game.

Like the Broncos, the Chargers have painted the field with an old-school feel, as well — the end zones are blue with white diamonds outlined in yellow, and the AFL’s 50th anniversary logo is painted at midfield.

Players are on the field warming up, and there have already been sightings of the brown-and-white striped socks along with the brown and gold pants. Clearly we’re in for an interesting uniform combination yet again.

Broncos at Chargers: Pregame Notes

December 28th, 2008 - 4:16pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

2:05 p.m. PT: So we’re here in the press box at Qualcomm Stadium — it’s open to the field. I guess the Chargers assume the San Diego weather is always pleasant enough for no windows — today that’s proving true. It’s really comfortable out there and I’m personally pretty excited to hear the crowd noise in this do-or-die game.

Quick fact update for all of you, given to me by Vice President of Public Relations Jim Saccomano — many of you probably read his blog. The last time the Broncos were underdogs by this much on the road, they won. Do you remember where that game was played? Right here in this stadium — Super Bowl XXXII. So maybe the team can cook up a little Mile High Magic here in San Diego once more.

Darrell Hackney is out on the field throwing passes at midfield, Brett Kern is punting and Greg Eslinger is jogging laps around the sidelines. The Chargers cheerleaders are practicing on the sidelines and it’s already feeling like a playoff atmosphere. Just walking through the tunnels in the bowels of the stadium, there was a distinct feeling that it’s go time.

The superstitions are still going here in the Internet/publications department, so I’m blogging since the last road game I blogged was a division win — the season-opener at Oakland. We’ve still got a little while until kickoff, so I’ll be back with some updates in a little while.

Broncos vs. Bills: Pregame Notes

December 21st, 2008 - 12:08pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

11:00 p.m. MST: Here we are, the final home game of the regular season at INVESCO Field at Mile High. The cheerleaders just finished practicing on the field, and the stadium staff is shoveling up a little bit of snow from around the player bench areas.

I’m back to live blogging the games, because as we’ve documented in the past, we in the Internet/Publications department are a superstitious bunch. I’ve got a decent record when I’m the blogger. Fellow intern Jake Grilley and I are even in the same seating arrangement from the last home game — a victory against Kansas City.

It’s nice and chilly out there — good football weather, but if you’re coming to watch the game, make friends with the person next to you because it’s going to be cold.

There are orange pom-poms in every seat, awaiting the capacity crowd’s arrival. I’m excited to see a sea of orange as the Broncos battle to clinch the AFC West and host a playoff game.

Broncos vs. Panthers: First Quarter Notes

December 14th, 2008 - 12:39pm by Kyle SonnemanOther posts by

15:00: Well the Broncos will return the ball. Eddie Royal is back deep to receive the kick from Rhys Lloyd. Nice return by Royal to almost the Denver 40.

Starting on offense:
WR Brandon Marshall
WR Eddie Royal
RB Tatum Bell
TE Daniel Graham
TE Tony Scheffler
OT Ryan Clady
OT Ryan Harris
G Ben Hamilton
G Chris Kuper
C Casey Wiegmann
QB Jay Cutler

14:39: Broncos start out with a five-yard run by Tatum Bell… But disaster on second down, Jay Cutler is sacked by Na’il Diggs and fumbles. Panthers ball at the Denver 21.

Denver is challenging the ruling of a fumble.

1:34 p.m. EST: Hello from Bank of America Stadium in uptown Charlotte. It is a little overcast with temperatures expected to be in upper 40s. Not as cool as it is in Denver, where we hear it is around seven degrees right now. Yikes!

Anywho, most of the folks in the press box are gathered around the TV right now watching the Chiefs and the Chargers game.

We will be heading down to the field here in a bit for some photos and we will also have the pregame inactives and any lineup changes.

Looks like K.C. just jumped out on top. Should be interesting…

2:16 p.m. EST: And Kansas City adds to their lead, with Tyler Thigpen hitting Dwayne Bowe on a slant. 14-0 Chiefs. Very interesting game as well, the teams have exchanged turnovers and emotions seem to be rising. Are you guys watching? What do you think thus far?
