After waiving Roderick Rogers on Sunday in order to acquire Calvin Lowry, the Broncos re-signed Rogers, but this time to the practice squad.

Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced the most recent transaction on Monday afternoon, and now all eight spots on the practice squad have been filled.

Rogers joined the Broncos in 2007, his rookie year, and spent the first 15 weeks of the season on the practice squad before being activated for the team’s final two games.

He played in all four of Denver’s preseason games in 2008, tying for fifth on the squad with nine tackles.

Four Signed to Practice Squad

August 31st, 2008 - 3:34pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by Gray Caldwell

On Sunday, the Broncos signed Josh Barrett, Mitch Erickson, Darrell Hackney and Steven Harris to their practice squad.

Barrett is a rookie from Arizona State University, a seventh-round pick in this year’s NFL Draft. He played in all four Denver preseason games in 2008, ranking fourth on the club in defensive tackles and tying for third in special-teams stops.

Erickson is an undrafted rookie out of South Dakota State University. He appeared in all four preseason games for Denver in 2008 following a collegiate career in which he received first-team All-America honors from the Associated Press as a senior at SDSU.

Hackney is a second-year quarterback out of the University of Alabama-Birmingham. He spent the final eight games of the 2007 season on the team’s active roster, and played in all four preseason games in 2008. He completed 24-of-38 passes for 285 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions, good for a 94.7 quarterback rating.

Harris is another second-year player who attended the University of Florida. Harris, who saw time in all four preseason contests for Denver in 2008, played four games for the Broncos in 2007 and totaled six tackles.

The Broncos may have up to eight players on their practice squad.

The Next Men Up?

The most recent two signees to the practice squad are at two of the slots that have been most beseiged by injuries: running back and safety.

So both Steve Cargile and Andre Hall know that their numbers could be called up to the 53-man roster at any time over the next five weeks — and beyond, if the Broncos can extend their streak of consecutive playoff appearances to four.

Denver has already foraged through its practice squad for active-roster players; wide receiver Brian Clark, running back Damien Nash and defensive tackle Antwon Burton have all been plucked from the eight-man reserve roster in recent weeks to see notable action, with Clark emerging as the team’s regular kickoff returner, Nash filling in as a tailback against the Raiders, Chargers and Chiefs and Burton seeing substantial work in the defensive-line rotation at Oakland.
