Fox on First Road Trip

September 15th, 2012 - 1:56pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

Head Coach John Fox is plenty familiar with the Atlanta Falcons. After all, he played them twice a year as the head coach of the Carolina Panthers from 2002 to 2010.

“It’s a unique place,” he said of the Georgia Dome. “A divisional rivalry for me for nine years. I’ve seen them change as far as quarterbacks and types of offenses over the years. It’s nice to get back. It’s a good organization. Nice people in the organization. It’ll be good visiting.”

As for the game at hand, Fox said that every week is a tough game, but Monday is the first chance the Broncos have to show what they can do away from the friendly confines of Sports Authority Field at Mile High.

“It’s our first road trip of 2012,” he said, “so I’m anxious to see how we react.”

INJURY REPORT

For the Broncos, only guard Chris Kuper is listed as out for the game. Cornerback Chris Harris and guard/center Philip Blake are listed as questionable, while wide receiver Demaryius Thomas and guard Manny Ramirez are both probable.

Versatility Key in the Trenches

On both the offensive and defensive fronts, a variety of players have seen time at different positions throughout practices and the Broncos’ preseason opener at Chicago.

That practice will pay off as the team moves forward without pieces on both lines as guard Chris Kuper and defensive end Jason Hunter miss time due to injuries.

Having players able to fill in at multiple positions allows flexibility when a starter is forced out of action.

“There are going to be some injuries from week to week, and the next guy steps up,” Offensive Coordinator Mike McCoy said. “That’s the importance of all the OTAs, minicamp and training camp, so that when your opportunity does come, you’ve got to make the most of it in this business.”

Blake’s ‘Long Story’ Leads to Broncos

May 12th, 2012 - 5:42pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

Philip Blake’s story has been well-covered.

The Baylor offensive lineman grew up in Canada, playing one year of high school football — his senior year.

Immediately he knew it was the sport for him.

But getting to play it at a Division I college was quite a process.

“It’s a long story,” Blake smiled.

He started by playing two years at Champlain Regional College in Quebec, Canada, and got recruited by Baylor Head Coach Art Briles and his staff.

The NCAA clearing house didn’t accept his high school and Canadian regional college grades, so he thought going to a school without football for a semester — University of Houston-Downtown would allow him to transfer to Baylor.

But he wasn’t academically eligible to play at Baylor, so instead he spent a year-and-a-half at Tyler Junior College in Texas, graduated and then joined the Baylor Bears as a 23-year-old sophomore.

Blake: From Virtual to Reality

Philip Blake didn’t grow up with football.

Being from Canada, Blake didn’t have very many football resources. However, his mother came home from a trip to New York with a present that would change his life.

The John Madden video game.

“I started playing it,” Blake — who couldn’t remember if it was Madden ’98 or ’99 — said in a conference call. “From then on I fell in love with the game.”
