Monday Morning Manning

October 29th, 2012 - 3:04pm by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

The title of this blog is borne in the fact that it seems like every Monday morning we are tabulating new facts and statistics recently accomplished by Peyton Manning, all of which have never happened previously.

This is a heck of a ride, Broncos fans, and it is really just hitting the first curve.

On Sunday night against the New Orleans Saints–which happened to be the 13th consecutive Denver game televised on either Sunday night, Monday night, Thursday night, or by the number one CBS crew of Jim Nantz and Phil Simms—Peyton Manning completed 22 of 30 passes for 305 yards, three touchdowns, no interceptions and a 139.9 rating.

Just because we get used to it does not mean it is not remarkably special.

Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning has been named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week after completing 24-of-30 passes for 309 yards with three touchdowns and one interception in Denver’s 35-24 comeback win at San Diego.

His 129.0 rating and 80-percent completion rate led all AFC quarterbacks in Week 6 and his three touchdown passes tied for the conference lead.

The weekly honor is the 22nd of Manning’s career, which is the most of any player since the awards originated in 1984.

He has become the first quarterback in NFL history to throw for 300 yards with three touchdowns and a 70 percent completion percentage in three consecutive games.

Manning in Historic Stretch

October 12th, 2012 - 11:41am by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

Quarterback Peyton Manning has called the Broncos offense a work in progress throughout his first games with the team in 2012.

That progress seems to be coming along as Denver’s offense ranks in the NFL’s top 10 in yards per game, yards per play, passing yards per game, interception rate, sack rate, first downs, third-down percentage, red-zone percentage and points per game through Week 5.

Leading that offense is Manning, who despite missing the entire 2011 season with a neck injury, ranks fourth in the NFL with 1,499 passing yards and 11 touchdowns for a QB rating of 101.0.

Over the past three games, as Manning has gotten more game experience playing with Denver’s personnel, he has completed 64.9 percent of his passes for 1,005 yards with eight touchdowns and zero interceptions, good for a passer rating of 107.3.

He has become one of just five quarterbacks in NFL history to throw for at least 1,000 yards and eight touchdowns without throwing an interception during a three-game stretch.

Broncos Focus on Eliminating Turnovers

October 12th, 2012 - 7:30am by Tyler EverettOther posts by

The Broncos are taking extra steps this week to ensure that ball security is not an issue moving forward.

Eliminating fumbles was a point of emphasis during Thursday’s practice, as each position group practiced ball security drills, running through a gauntlet of coaches attempting to strip the football.

“I don’t have any secret answer for you,” quarterback Peyton Manning said of eliminating turnovers. “We just need to protect the ball better. That’s the simple and short of it. We focused on ball security today. It’s a point of emphasis for us. It needs to start in practice and then carry over to the game as well.”

A Player to Savor

October 9th, 2012 - 2:20pm by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

It is a long season in the National Football League, and while Denver Broncos fans and personnel all wish for immediate success, we also realize that it takes a whole season to fulfill the goals of a team.

But along the way, let us take time to savor the remarkable fact that Peyton Manning takes his snaps in Denver.

When he first became a free agent, people chuckled at the prospect of him coming to Denver. Then, everyone could not believe it was a real possibility. Ultimately, he signed with the Broncos.

And now, as with all things, there is actually the possibility, as absurd as it seems, of taking Peyton Manning’s presence in the Broncos lineup for granted.

Never, ever take a moment of watching this player for granted. He is football royalty, both personally and by pedigree.

Foes On Field, Friends Off It

October 3rd, 2012 - 5:31pm by Sam DavisOther posts by

On the field, quarterbacks Tom Brady and Peyton Manning have a history.

Off the field, they have a friendship.

“It’s really grown over the years,” Brady said in a conference call Wednesday. “We’ve known each other for a long time. We talk about a lot of things. We’ve seen each other off the field quite a few times over the years. He’s always really been someone I look up to and admire — certainly the way he plays the game, but also the way he handles himself off the field.”

Eleven years and four days ago, the two shook hands at Foxboro Stadium for the first time. It was during warmups prior to the first start of Brady’s career when he approached the Colts’ signal caller.

Belichick Respects the Run

October 3rd, 2012 - 10:44am by Sam DavisOther posts by

Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick knows all of the different challenges that Peyton Manning will pose to his defense on Sunday.

One of those challenges is the way Manning utilizes the run, knowing exactly when and where to hand the ball off.

“I think Peyton has always used the running game well,” Belichick said in a conference call Wednesday. “He certainly understands how to attack defenses and where defenses are light, whether it’s in the running game, or the outside passing game, or play action or down the field or misdirection plays — whatever it happens to be — Peyton does a really good job of anticipating them, seeing them and getting his team in place to attack them. Certainly the run game is a part of it. I think he’s always used that as a good weapon against the defense, and it has complemented the passing game.”

The Broncos have run the ball 113 times this year, an average of nearly 30 times per game. Willis McGahee has led the way with a pair of 100-yard performances and a trio of rushing touchdowns.

The 10th-year veteran has spent his entire career in the AFC — including his first five years in the AFC East with the Buffalo Bills — so Belichick is very familiar with him.

Manning, McGahee Nominated for Awards

October 2nd, 2012 - 9:19am by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

A pair of Broncos are up for weekly awards following Denver’s 37-6 victory vs. Oakland in Week 4. Quarterback Peyton Manning is nominated for the FedEx Air Player of the Week and running back Willis McGahee is nominated for the FedEx Ground Player of the Week.

Manning completed 30-of-38 passes for 338 yards and three touchdowns and no interceptions for a passer rating of 130.0. Manning’s passer rating led all players in Week 4 and his 338 passing yards represented the 65th 300-yard passing game of his career to extend his NFL record.

McGahee rushed for 112 yards and one touchdown on 19 carries (5.9 avg.) against the Raiders. Sunday marked the 32nd career 100-yard rushing game to move past Steven Jackson as the NFL’s active leader in career 100-yard games.

Fans can vote for one player in each category on NFL.com/FedEx through 1 p.m. MDT on Friday to determine the FedEx Air & Ground NFL Players of the Week. The winners will be announced Friday on NFL Total Access on NFL Network and on NFL.com.

Smith ‘Very Familiar’ with Manning and Thomas

September 13th, 2012 - 1:45pm by Sam DavisOther posts by

Falcons Head Coach Mike Smith has yet to face quarterback Peyton Manning during his five-year term in Atlanta. But prior to 2008, Smith has lots of experience going up against the four-time MVP.

As the defensive coordinator of the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2003-07, Smith and his defense faced Manning 10 times. He also saw Manning while he was the defensive line and linebackers coach for the Baltimore Ravens in 2001 and 2002.

“(I’ve) had a lot of games against Peyton,” Smith said in a conference call on Thursday. “Watching him run the no-huddle (on Sunday night) was reminiscent of having to play against him when I was in Jacksonville.”

Against Smith’s defense in Jacksonville, Manning threw for more than 300 yards in five of 10 games. But Smith also experienced some moderate success against No. 18, holding him to a quarterback rating of 81 or less four times.

The Falcons’ head coach also talked about his familiarity with wide receiver Demaryius Thomas, who played his college ball less than two miles from the Georgia Dome.

“(I’m) very familiar with Demaryius from when he was at Georgia Tech,” Smith said. “I’ve known (Georgia Tech) Coach (Paul) Johnson for a long time there at Georgia Tech, so I follow Georgia Tech very closely.”

Smith went on to talk about the challenges of facing a player with Thomas’ skill and size.

“(Thomas) is a big, strong, athletic wide receiver that can create matchup problems,” Smith said. “As a defensive coach, when he gets the ball in his hands, you’ve got to hold your breath, because he can break tackles. He’s got a great stiff-arm, and he’s got outstanding long speed, as evidenced by the way he ran on the quick-screen in the game Sunday night.”

Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan also spoke to Denver media in a conference call on Thursday. Like Smith, Ryan spoke of Manning’s no-huddle offense with great respect.

Ryan entered the league in 2008 and has been the team’s starting quarterback since day one. With Atlanta incorporating more and more of the no-huddle offense, Ryan said he looks at the way Manning runs it as he tries to implement a similar style into his own game.

“I think he set the benchmark for quarterbacks playing in that no huddle system really in the modern era,” Ryan said. “We started doing it my rookie year and I think it’s evolved a lot from where we were then until now. I’ve become more comfortable in it. I think our team has become more comfortable in it because we’ve done a bunch of it.”

Monday night will mark the first time Ryan and Manning have faced one another.
