Quarterback Peyton Manning’s remarkable comeback season has earned him the honor of AFC Offensive Player of the Year at the NFL 101 Awards.

The 43rd Annual NFL 101 Awards — the nation’s premier football awards event dedicated exclusively to the NFL — will be held in Kansas City, Mo., on Saturday, March 2.

It marks the seventh time Manning has won an NFL 101 Award, the most of any player.

Manning finished the regular season with 4,659 passing yards, 37 touchdowns and a passer rating of 105.8, which led the AFC. His 68.6 completion rate was tied for first in the entire league.

The 12-time Pro Bowler was voted the recipient of the award by 101 members of the national media.

AP All-Pro Team Features Four Broncos

January 12th, 2013 - 11:09am by Sam DavisOther posts by

The Associated Press has announced its 2012 NFL All-Pro team, and it features four Broncos — two on each side of the ball.

Quarterback Peyton Manning, tackle Ryan Clady and linebacker Von Miller earned first-team honors, while cornerback Champ Bailey made the second team.

Manning and Miller garnered their third All-Pro nominations of the year after being selected by Sports Illustrated and Pro Football Writers of America earlier in the week. Manning broke franchise records in nearly every single-season passing category during his first year as a Bronco. Miller became the club’s single-season sack king in Week 16, finishing with 18.5 sacks on the year.

Clady, Manning and Miller Named PFWA All-Pros

January 10th, 2013 - 2:17pm by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

Another round of postseason accolades were awarded to the Broncos on Thursday with Pro Football Weekly/Professional Football Writers of America naming tackle Ryan Clady, quarterback Peyton Manning and linebacker Von Miller to its All-Pro team.

Denver’s three selections to the team tied for second-most among all clubs.

Here is what PFW/PFWA had to say about the three Broncos selections:

Tackle Ryan Clady
“Clady had his best season statistically, and he did it in his contract year. Selected to his third career Pro Bowl, he allowed the fewest sacks (one) among tackles who started every game for their team this season. Clady has yet to miss a game in his pro career.”

Quarterback Peyton Manning
“Tightening his lock on a first-ballot ticket to Canton, the 36-year-old Manning was brilliant in his first season in Denver. Directing his team to at least 12 wins for the eighth time in his last nine seasons with the Colts and Broncos, he tied for the league lead with 10 100-plus passer ratings, tied for second in completion percentage (68.6) and became only the second player in league history (Steve Young, 1998) to throw for at least 300 yards and three touchdowns in four consecutive games.”

Linebacker Von Miller
“The first player in team history to earn a Pro Bowl berth in each of his first two seasons, Miller has wasted no time becoming one of the league’s most dominant defenders, ranking in the top five in sacks (18½, third in the league), QB knockdowns, QB hurries, tackles for loss (28), run stuffs and forced fumbles (six). In 2012, the second overall pick in the 2011 draft became only the league’s second player since 1994 to record at least 15 sacks, 25 tackles for loss and five forced fumbles in a single season.”

On Tuesday, quarterback Peyton Manning was named the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame Athlete of the year, along with Olympic swimmer and gold medalist Missy Franklin. The selection committee named Manning the professional athlete of the year and Franklin the amateur athlete of the year.

The pair of winners met when Franklin visited a Broncos training camp practice in June. Wide receiver Eric Decker also surprised her at an assembly at her high school in May.

Perspective Only Makes Manning Greater

January 2nd, 2013 - 1:20pm by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

When fans see or hear that quarterback Peyton Manning was named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week for the final regular season week of the National Football League season, there can be some temptation to treat this as routine news.

But there is nothing routine about greatness. Just because it happens a lot, that does not diminish it in any way.

John Elway once told me that the definition of greatness for a player is to be great some of the time, but really good all the rest of the time.

Easy to say, hard to do.

The Player of the Week Award announced Wednesday is the 23rd of Manning’s brilliant (yet probably understated) career. It ties him with Tom Brady for the most ever, each with that total of 23.

Manning Nominated for FedEx Air NFL Player of the Week

The Broncos’ convincing 38-3 win over the Chiefs in Sunday’s regular-season finale yielded a pair of weekly award nominations for the Broncos.

Quarterback Peyton Manning is up for the FedEx Air NFL Player of the Week after completing 23-of-29 passes for 304 yards and three touchdowns with a QB rating of 144.8 in just three quarters of work in the win. The 144.8 rating is the highest by an AFC passer this season.

Manning is up against his brother, Eli, who passed for 208 yards and five touchdowns in the Giants’ 42-7 win, and Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder, who threw for 235 yards and three touchdowns in Minnesota’s Week 17 victory.

This marks the fifth time in 2012 — and second in the past two weeks — that Manning has been nominated for the weekly award.

Manning: ‘I Didn’t Get The Tackle?’

December 30th, 2012 - 9:08pm by Sam DavisOther posts by

Peyton Manning’s performance on Sunday featured contributions from more than just the pocket.

In the second quarter, Chiefs cornerback Brandon Flowers was on his way to a 76-yard fumble return touchdown. But Manning stuck with the play and took an angle on Flowers, drawing contact and forcing him to cut back into the arms of tight end Joel Dreessen, who made the tackle at the 12-yard line.

After the turnover, the Denver defense held Kansas City to a field goal rather than a game-tying touchdown.

“I knew if I at least made them cut back, I thought somebody would be there,” Manning recalled. “it was a heck of a play by Joel hustling back. As soon as that happens, what you want to do is try to get them down and hold them to three so it was a good hustle play by Joel.”

Covering All Their Bases

December 27th, 2012 - 5:15pm by Tyler EverettOther posts by

The Broncos’ 2012 season has seen the team pile up 12 victories in a number of different ways.

From the furious 21-point comeback win in San Diego that jumpstarted the team’s 10-game winning streak to comfortable victories, Denver has shown the ability to win under various circumstances.

But through it all, one type of win that has eluded the Broncos has been that of the last-second variety. While the team has been pleased that it hasn’t needed dramatic rallies in the closing minutes, it believes experience in such scenarios would be valuable. That’s why Denver does as much as possible in practice to prepare itself for anything that might come its way. But it’s something that Offensive Coordinator Mike McCoy admits is difficult to achieve on the practice field.
