Decker Plots Revenge for Manning Prank

April 17th, 2013 - 1:20pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

If there’s one thing Eric Decker has learned about playing with Peyton Manning, it’s that he always needs to be on his toes.

That was on full display last week at Duke University, when Decker, Demaryius Thomas and Wes Welker worked out with Manning and his brother Eli along with three Giants receivers.

“It’s funny because Peyton and Eli love to joke around with one another,” Decker said. “I think that makes us as receivers more comfortable, that these guys work their tail off, they demand the best out of you, but they like to have a good time.”

But you can’t get too comfortable.

At the end of the workout sessions, Decker wasn’t in on the joke when he received a $3,000 invoice from Manning.

Inside Look at Duke Workouts

April 11th, 2013 - 8:17am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

Once again, Peyton Manning headed to Durham, N.C., to get ready to tackle a full season of football.

But this time, it wasn’t to rehab. Instead, he brought three of his receivers — Demaryius Thomas, Eric Decker and newcomer Wes Welker — to Duke University to work together in advance of the team’s official offseason conditioning program.

Giants quarterback Eli Manning brought three of his receivers — Hakeem Nicks, Victor Cruz and Louis Murphy — as well.

Via Twitter, here’s an inside look at what the work was like.

In between workouts, the players got a chance to check out one of the most storied venues in college basketball.

Manning Blogs About USO Tour

March 6th, 2013 - 2:35pm by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

During his recent trip overseas with the USO to visit troops stationed abroad, quarterback Peyton Manning kept a journal.

After returning to the United States, he shared parts of his entries with ESPN.

In his posts, Manning talks about the gratitude he has toward the military.

“It was awesome to see and understand just how skilled our military personnel are in this country and how much pride they take in their profession,” he wrote. “My body’s way off with jet lag for sure but I don’t get tired because these people fire me up and inspire me.”

Manning shared some his sense of humor that he got to display on the trip.

“About 12 of us, helmets and goggles on for takeoff and landing,” he wrote about flying on a C-2 aircraft from the United Arab Emirates to an aircraft carrier outside of the Arabian Gulf. “I got to sit up in the cockpit for half the flight. They let me make a few announcements on the PA system. I announced that in order for us to land we needed Curt Schilling and coach Clyde Christensen to please sit on opposite sides of the plane for weight-balance issues. Pilots got a good laugh out of that one.”

Manning Accepts Player of the Year Honor

March 2nd, 2013 - 6:08pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

On Saturday, Peyton Manning woke up in Germany on a USO tour.

He didn’t let that stop him from attending the NFL 101 Awards in Kansas City, Mo., to accept his record seventh award later that evening.

“Once I received the award, I committed to being here,” Manning said. “I’ve been here every year — I’m proud of that fact. It’s a banquet that’s worth coming to, because it’s really special. And to be here with my old coach makes it even more special.”

That coach would be Manning’s offensive coordinator from his college days, current Duke Head Coach David Cutcliffe. Cutcliffe introduced Manning before the quarterback accepted the award for AFC Offensive Player of the Year.

Manning said Cutcliffe and the Broncos trainers were some of the people that were instrumental in helping him get back on the football field in 2012. He couldn’t help but think of how far he had come throughout the Broncos’ AFC West-title season.

“I certainly was reflective all year, and this is a nice way to kind of culminate what’s really been a special comeback,” he said. “It’s not the goal, the individual award, but I’m honored and humbled to be recognized by the committee with this award. The fact that this is my seventh time, it’s certainly special.”

Manning finished the regular season with 4,659 passing yards, 37 touchdowns and a passer rating of 105.8, which led the AFC. His 68.6 completion rate was tied for first in the entire league.

The 12-time Pro Bowler was voted the recipient of the award by 101 members of the national media.

“This really is the premier banquet, so it’s an honor to be back,” Manning said. “I’m just glad to be back playing football again. I appreciate Coach Cutcliffe being here to introduce me. That’s what makes this banquet so unique, that they allow you to bring someone to introduce you. I’ve had my dad, my brother Cooper, Tom Moore, Tony Dungy, Jim Caldwell — it’s nice to have my old college coach here as well.”

One Final Monday Morning Manning

February 4th, 2013 - 3:00pm by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

Before we turn the page to 2013 for the Denver Broncos and the new National Football League season, we can take one final, last blog dealing with Monday Morning Manning.

From day one with the Broncos, Peyton Manning’s accomplishments have been extreme both in terms of their high level as well as the extraordinary volume.

And the last weekend of the season was no exception to this.

Even though the Broncos were not in the NFL championship game, Manning was in New Orleans for the league Saturday night honors show, and his statistics in terms of honors are just like his stats on the playing field—absolutely dominating, and they speak volumes about his status in the game.

Manning Knows NFL Sibling Rivalries

February 2nd, 2013 - 6:09pm by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

Editor’s Note: DenverBroncos.com’s Stuart Zaas is in New Orleans working for the NFL during Super Bowl week. He will check in from time to time with updates leading up to the game on Sunday.

The story of the Harbaugh brothers has been front and center this week as Jim and John Harbaugh prepare to coach the San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Ravens, respectively in Super Bowl XLVII.

They aren’t the only pair of NFL siblings in town this week however, as the Manning family has gathered in New Orleans as well.

After accepting his FedEx Air Player of the Year Award at the NFL’s 2nd annual NFL Honors show, Manning was asked if he had any advice for the coaching brothers.

“Those guys don’t need any advice,” Manning said. “I know my dad can certainly sympathize with their parents. At the end of the game tomorrow night is going to be one of the sons on cloud nine, the other is going to be very disappointed.”

Broncos TV Counts Down Manning’s Top TD Passes

January 22nd, 2013 - 10:04am by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

Today on DenverBroncos.com, we began a new series titled “Top 10 Tuesdays,” where we will count down the top 10 plays in various categories over the next five weeks.

The first list looked at Peyton Manning’s top 10 touchdown passes of the season.

Here’s the order we came up with:

10: Manning’s 400th TD pass and first as a Bronco vs. Pittsburgh
In Denver’s season opener against Pittsburgh, Manning hit Demaryius Thomas on a screen pass and the wideout raced 71 yards to the end zone for the score that put Denver ahead 14-13 in the game it would go on to win 31-19. The pass marked Manning’s longest of the season.

9: Manning to Decker for a 51-yard TD at Baltimore
Manning hit Eric Decker in stride on a 51-yard bomb to put the Broncos ahead 31-3 against the Ravens in Week 15.

8: Manning to Stokley for a 38-yard TD vs. Houston
In the fourth quarter against the Houston Texans in Week 3, Manning went over the middle to Brandon Stokley, who made the 38-yard catch over the Texans’ safety. The score started Denver’s comeback, but the Broncos would end up losing the game 31-25.

7: Manning to Decker for an 11-yard TD vs. Kansas City
Manning found a narrow window between the cornerback and the safety to hit Decker for an 11-yard scoring strike in the regular-season finale. The play put Denver ahead 14-3 in the game that it would win by a final score of 38-3 to earn the AFC’s No. 1 seed for the playoffs.

Gase on Manning

January 17th, 2013 - 12:21pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

Perhaps no one in the organization spent more time with quarterback Peyton Manning during the 2012 season than his position coach, Adam Gase.

Now offensive coordinator, Gase shed some light onto his relationship with Manning.

It’s built, he said, on their shared work ethic.

“The way that he works, I think (we) probably helped each other because I think he appreciates when he sees guys trying to do what he does — grind like he does,” Gase said. “I think that’s what he’s looking for with everybody in the building. He gravitates to people like that. I tried to do that 100 percent, just get after it as much as possible, get him as many answers as he needed for that week. In the offseason, the studying and being able to be ahead of what we were doing, that was huge. You had to really get after it. He’s as smart and works as hard as it gets out there. You can’t just walk in there in his meeting room and just say, ‘Hey, I think I got it.’ You better be on it.”
