Dove Valley Update: March 10

March 10th, 2009 - 2:53pm by Adam ZinserOther posts by Adam Zinser

It’s called the offseason. After all, the Broncos aren’t holding practices or playing games on Sundays.

But as Daniel Graham said last Friday at a community event, “What offseason?”

With the offseason conditioning program set to kickoff Monday, March 16 at Dove Valley, a number of guys are already back in town to get ready. Sure, many of them enjoyed traveling around the country and relaxing, but even then, most of them have been working out to stay in shape so that they can hit the ground running once the team reconvenes.

This morning, there were several players in the locker room and training room at Dove Valley. Boss Bailey, Peyton Hillis, Kory Lichtensteiger, Tyler Polumbus, Carlton Powell and Ryan Torain were all at the facility.

Peyton Hillis Update

January 15th, 2009 - 11:48am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by Gray Caldwell

Saw that some fans on the message board yesterday were wondering about Peyton Hillis’ recovery from his hamstring injury he suffered against the Chiefs.

He’s been hanging around the locker room since he’s at the facilities rehabbing this offseason, and I thought I’d give you all a quick update.

He said everything’s coming along fine, and he’s not too concerned that he is staying in Denver working while many of his teammates are on vacation or home with their families.

“As long as I’m in here getting better, getting stronger, getting faster, there’s really not a problem for me,” he said.

Losing a Bet…

December 11th, 2008 - 8:11pm by Ryan TorainOther posts by Ryan Torain

So the National Championship is set, and I think it might be Florida that comes out on top. I haven’t been able to watch much college football this season for obvious reasons, whether it’s preparing for games or rehabbing, but I’ve seen Florida play a couple times and they’ve got a lot of playmakers. I’ve been able to catch highlights from other games, too, and I’m just feeling like the Gators are going to come out on top.

Speaking of college football, some of you might remember that ASU played Arizona last week, and unfortunately it didn’t turn out as well as I might have hoped for the Sun Devils. Well, even more unfortunately, Spencer and I kind of made a bet. If ASU wins, Josh Barrett and I would give him some Arizona State stuff to wear. But if Arizona wins, we would have to wear some Arizona stuff.

It was actually kind of funny how it turned out. The game was on Saturday and I ran into him on Monday. I had on a red shirt and some blue shorts, didn’t even mean to, so I was already wearing Arizona colors. He said he didn’t have any gear for me to wear right then, and the week is almost over…so I think I’m getting a pass. Plus I was technically sporting Arizona anyway…

Four Roster Moves

December 9th, 2008 - 5:32pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by Gray Caldwell

The team made official on Tuesday what Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced on Monday. Peyton Hillis was placed on the Reserve/Injured list today with a hamstring injury, and running back Cory Boyd was upgraded from the practice squad to the active roster.

The team also waived safety Calvin Lowry on Tuesday, signing guard Pat Murray off the Seattle Seahawks’ practice squad to fill the roster spot.

Boyd, signed by Denver to its practice squad on Nov. 4, is a rookie out of the University of South Carolina. He racked up 2,267 rushing yards and 1,303 receiving yards in 46-game career as a Gamecock. He is just the second player in school history to amass 2,000 rushing yards and reel in 100 receptions. He is also just the second player in school history to have 1,000 yards rushing and receiving.

Hillis, a rookie out of Arkansas, emerged as the Broncos’ go-to back after injuries plagued the backfield early in the season. He leads the team with 343 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns. His six total touchdowns (5 rush., 1 rec.) are tied for the team lead with Brandon Marshall.

Murray was originally signed by Green Bay as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2007. He played in 41 games with 32 starts at Division II Truman State, earning first-team All-Mid-America honors in 2006.

Another Injury, Another Opportunity

December 8th, 2008 - 5:46pm by Jake GrilleyOther posts by Jake Grilley

The Broncos received more bad news on the injury front Monday. Peyton Hillis will miss the remainder of the season with a torn hamstring. Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced during his Monday press conference that Hillis’ injury will take eight weeks to heal, forcing the rookie rusher to be placed on injured reserve.

For fellow rusher Cory Boyd, this means he is getting his opportunity. Shanahan said that the team will be elevating Boyd from its practice squad.

Boyd said getting his opportunity by way of Hillis’ injury is bittersweet, but that he is looking forward to making the most of it.

“I am just thankful that God has placed me with this team — to be able and go out and do these types of things,” he said. “Unfortunately there had to be a lot of injuries for me to get here. But Peyton has carried the team for a good while. Every running back that has been called upon after injury has stepped up and done everything they have needed to do.”

Hillis Done for the Year

December 8th, 2008 - 2:41pm by Adam ZinserOther posts by Adam Zinser

Head Coach Mike Shanahan just announced in his press conference that Peyton Hillis will be placed on injured reserve after tearing his hamstring in Sunday’s win over the Chiefs.

Shanahan said it would be approximately an eight-week recovery for the rookie fullback.

This is another blow to the Broncos running back corps that has already seen four backs placed on IR — Anthony Alridge, Andre Hall, Michael Pittman and Ryan Torain.

Hillis had been playing well against the Chiefs, carrying eight times for 58 yards and a touchdown. He injured his hamstring while receiving a pass from Jay Cutler, leaping up high for the grab. As he came down with the ball, he landed with his leg fully extended, resulting in the tear.

Hillis Showing Versatility

December 3rd, 2008 - 4:37pm by Jake GrilleyOther posts by Jake Grilley

Peyton Hillis is fresh off the first 100-yard rushing performance of his NFL career. When asked if he envisioned this happening back during training camp, Hillis said he has always set high goals for himself.

“It was just to get out there and be on the team and try to get a starting spot somewhere, no matter where it was,” Hillis said about his mindset during camp. “I always try to set my expectations kind of high, and I have to say it has exceeded my expectations.”

Hillis and McFadden Square Off … On Clothing

November 19th, 2008 - 6:08pm by Jake GrilleyOther posts by Jake Grilley

YING AND YANG

The Broncos’ Peyton Hillis and the Raiders’ Darren McFadden know a thing or two about one another. In high school Hillis was Arkansas’ leading rusher his senior season, McFadden was second to Hillis that same season as a junior. Hillis went onto the University of Arkansas where he played fullback and helped pave the way for McFadden for three seasons.

Last season Hillis finished with 886 all-purpose yards and blocked for Heisman Trophy runner-up McFadden, who ranked fourth in the nation in rushing with 1,830 yards.

The two college teammates both should see time at running back as their two NFL teams go at it this weekend at INVESCO Field at Mile High.

Though the two players admitted they haven’t been able to keep in touch as much as they would have liked so far this season they know one another well enough that they can paint a pretty accurate picture of what the other guy is up to.

“I imagine (Hillis) would have a button up shirt on with the top three buttons not buttoned,” McFadden said. “With his chest hanging out, his neck showing and some cowboy boots — he is always in some type of cowboy boot.”

Tatum’s Second Chance and Nate Jackson Jokes

FROM CELL PHONE CARRIER TO BALL CARRIER

When the Broncos signed free-agent running Tatum Bell on Tuesday, they not only gave him a second chance as a Bronco — they gave him a second shot at football.

Bell had been out of football since September when he was released by the Detroit Lions. After his release he moved back to Denver and tried to find work.

That work came in the form of manager of a cell phone store in a Denver-area mall.

Bell said going from a 1,000-yard rusher in the National Football League to retail manager was a humbling experience but not one that he was ashamed of.

“I was like, man, this is the real world – 9-5 everyday,” Bell said of his first “real” job. “I held my head up high going to work each day. I didn’t have a problem with it at all. That is what I had to do to feed my family and that is what I was doing.”

Whenever Broncos fans would walk by the store, Bell said he would stop them so they could talk about football and see if they might be interested in a new cell phone. Bell, who had to wear a collared shirt and tie to work each day, said he has a newfound reverence for people who work 9-5.

“I sold a couple (of phones),” Bell said. “It is actually is pretty hard.”

It was Bell’s phone that rang on Tuesday when the Broncos invited him in for a workout and another chance at football. And he looks to make the most of his opportunity.
