A Night With the Coaches

May 15th, 2012 - 10:27pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

DENVER – A few hours after speaking with season ticket holders on a conference call, Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway and Head Coach John Fox headed to Sports Authority Field at Mile High.

There, they hosted A Night With the Coaches alongside Offensive Coordinator Mike McCoy, Defensive Coordinator Jack Del Rio and Special Teams Coordinator Jeff Rodgers.

The event, presented by US Bank and Del Frisco’s, was emceed by Vice President of Corporate Communications Jim Saccomano. After an hour of cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, the attendees made their way to tables and awaited the main event of the evening — an hour-long Q&A session.

The coaches touched on a variety of topics, including each of the team’s seven 2012 NFL Draft selections, the ways the offense, defense and special teams units will change this season and how to ensure the stadium stays loud.

After the event, raffle prizes were given out — including gift certificates to Del Frisco’s and footballs autographed by Elway and Fox. All five guests of honor stuck around afterward to talk with attendees and snap a few pictures.

Notebook: Injury Updates

Against the Chicago Bears in Week 14, Brian Dawkins injured his neck.

Since then, the veteran safety has missed three games — including last week’s 29-23 win in the Wild Card round of the playoffs — and was absent from the majority of a fourth game when he left the Buffalo contest in Week 16 in the first quarter.

But Head Coach John Fox said Wednesday that there is some positive news.

“He’s way further along this week than he was last week, and we’ll play it by ear,” Fox said of Dawkins. “When he gets cleared medically, we’ll have him out there.”

Dawkins (neck) did not participate in Wednesday’s practice, and neither did Eric Decker (knee) and Lonie Paxton (personal).

David Bruton (Achilles), Daniel Fells (ankle) and Elvis Dumervil (ankle) had limited participation, and Von Miller (thumb) participated fully in the session, which was moved indoors due to snow.

Fox was asked about those players’ injuries after practice.

McCoy Expects ‘Fun, Exciting Offense’

July 6th, 2011 - 2:14pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

Mike McCoy said earlier this offseason that he wants the offense to get back to its bruising roots — pounding the ball with the ground game.

But that’s not to say he’s not excited about the explosive options the team has in the passing game — particularly the two new tight ends the club picked up through the draft.

“These were two players that were very explosive — there are some things we want to do in the passing game with them,” McCoy told Broncos TV. “Julius (Thomas) obviously doesn’t have a whole lot of experience playing football, so there’s going to be a little bit of a learning curve for him. We’ll gradually work him into things and kind of find out what he can do. Then Virgil (Green) made a lot of plays up there in Nevada. Those are two explosive players that we’re looking forward to working with and kind of just molding them into our system. Gradually work them in, give them as much as they can handle and then as they pick up things, the more we’ll give them.”

Learning Curve

As Tim Tebow continues to grow from his first few games as an NFL starting quarterback, Offensive Coordinator Mike McCoy said he’s learning right along with the rookie.

McCoy, who assumed playcalling duties three games ago, said he and the offensive staff have appreciated the chance to pick up added responsibility down the stretch this season.

“It’s a great opportunity to learn because there’s something that comes up every week,” McCoy said. “You’re never going to call a perfect game. There’s always going to be something that you want to call, or you want back that you called, and you learn from it.”
