Day 2 Blog

9:37 a.m. EST: Good morning from Day 3 of the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

DenverBroncos.com is live from the press room where we expect to hear from linebackers, defensive linemen and possibly some running backs, wide receviers and quarterbacks that didn’t get a chance to meet the press yesterday.

Stay tuned throughout the day for live updates. Remember, you don’t have to refresh this page, as new posts will automatically appear. Use the comments section to let us know if there are any defensive linemen or linebackers that you want to hear from today.

10:21 a.m. EST:

Testing results are beginning to trickle in, beginning with unofficial 40-yard dash times for offensive linemen.

Terron Armstead has set an unofficial record with his 4.69 time. The 6’5″ 306-pound lineman’s time was nearly half a second faster than the next best mark by an offensive lineman this season, which belonged to Colorado lineman David Bakhtiari. He beat the previous record of 4.84 seconds that was set by Missouri Southern State’s Allen Barbre in 2007.

2013 NFL Scouting Combine: Day Two

February 22nd, 2013 - 7:19am by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

2013 NFL Scouting Combine Day 2:

9:17 a.m. EST: We are back at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis for Day Two of the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine. Today, we’ll hear from Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway at around 10:45 a.m. EST, followed by some of the quarterback, running back and wide receiver prospects throughout the day.

Stay tuned to this blog and DenverBroncos.com throughout the day for updates. Don’t worry about hitting refresh on this page – it will update automatically as we add new posts. Let us know in the comments section if there are players you are interested in hearing from today.

11:35 a.m. EST:

Elway took the podium and covered a variety of topics. Below are some quick hits from his press conference:

On whether he expects championships after the playoff loss, like after 1996 loss
“I hope so. I was just talking to someone out there, talking about forget last year. I don’t want to forget last year. I don’t want our team to forget it. I want them to realize it was a great year, but also don’t forget that feeling of what happened in the playoff game. Be able to learn from that. Hopefully we can build on it and get better from it, as we did in ’96. ’97 and ’98 were good years for us, so I’m hoping that we can learn like we did back then with this experience. I’m hopeful. We’ve got a good football team, so we think that we’ll continue to build on that and see what happens.”

On whether QB Peyton Manning met or exceeded his expectations
“I think he met the expectations. He probably exceeded them. If you look at the numbers, what he did, he had a tremendous year. In talking to different guys that have kind of been through what he’s been through when it comes to that neck, there’s a lot more to it than I think that I knew, as well as what a lot of people know, having to go through that and come back from that. In that case, I think he exceeded the expectations. Now that I know what he had to go through and the things that he had to overcome with that neck, not so much physically, but mentally, he did a tremendous job in the way he worked at it. So when I say he met, I should probably rephrase that and say he exceeded that. But I’m looking forward to next year, too. I think he’s just going to continue to get better.”

On QB Brock Osweiler
“We’re excited with Brock. He came in and even having a year with him under our roof, we’re even more excited about him and what he can do. Obviously it worked out tremendously with Peyton. Brock was a guy that I thought could come in and eventually be that guy, to be able to learn from Peyton Manning as long as Peyton still wants to play. He’ll continue to grow, because he was a young guy, he was a junior coming out. So we’re really excited about where we are at that position. Brock’s going to continue to get better and better.”

2013 NFL Scouting Combine: Day One

February 21st, 2013 - 8:06am by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

2013 NFL Scouting Combine:

9:53 a.m. EST: Here we are at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, ready to cover the first day of the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine. We’ve been set up for about an hour and a half, and the room is filling up fast with media members. Chicago Bears Head Coach Marc Trestman just stepped to the podium — the first person to address the media today. Head Coach John Fox is scheduled to speak at 10:45 a.m. EST. This live blog will be updated throughout the day as more coaches and players address the media. Today will bring interviews with offensive linemen, tight ends and specialists, so stay tuned.

11:24 a.m. EST: Head Coach John Fox just spoke at the podium. Click here to watch his press conference in which he talks about the development of the Broncos’ 2012 rookie class, contract negotiations with Ryan Clady and Peyton Manning’s continued rehabilitation.

11:44 a.m. EST: Below are a few quick hits from Fox’s press session this morning:

On Ronnie Hillman becoming a feature back
“I think Ronnie is a very talented player. He had a great rookie season. He is very explosive. Like any first-year player, you have a lot of room for improvement. I thought he finished the season very strong.”

On expectations for Derek Wolfe
“I think our draft class did fantastic. Derek, he probably played as much as any rookie in the league, I know on defense. Our defense is a little unique – without getting into too many technicalities – but he plays a spot that is very important against the run. It’s probably not as advantageous to rush the passer from the position he’s at. I thought he had a superb year and he’s going to be a great young player moving forward.”

On Peyton Manning’s continued recovery
“Even as far back as almost this time a year ago, his type of injury – a lot was made of the neck and the surgeries and all those things. The reality is that it is kind of a nerve situation and it takes a while for nerves to grow. He’s getting better every day. I think he’ll be health-wise, even better this year.”

12:24 p.m. EST:

Eric Fisher was one of the first offensive linemen to meet the press. The tackle out of Central Michigan University talked about striving to be the first tackle drafted.

“I’m working to be the No. 1 tackle,” Fisher said. “That’s not up to me in the end. That’s up to coaches and general managers, but that’s what I’m working for.”

Allow Me to Reintroduce Myself

February 21st, 2013 - 7:39am by Andrew MasonOther posts by

Ideally, I’d have this re-introduction to DenverBroncos.com narrated by the gravelly tones of Sam Elliott, and it’d include a phrase like this: "Sometimes there’s a man — well, he’s the man for his time and place. He fits right in there." But Elliott’s probably too expensive for something as piddling as a sportswriter returning to a place he once wrote after five years away.

So let’s get to the point. If you were a regular visitor to this site from 2002-08, you might remember me. If not, no worries. Recently, I’ve covered the Broncos for various outlets since 2010, including The Sporting News and The New York Times, and also covered John Fox-coached teams for two years in Carolina. As Fox would say, "It’s not my first rodeo."

I’ll be breaking down all things Broncos, past and present. I won’t be breaking a lot of news; this site already has folks in place for that. But I’ll analyze, answer your questions — which you can post here, or tweet them to me @MaseDenver.

But don’t ask me who the Broncos will pick or sign in free agency. (Well, you can ask; I just might not answer.) Since I’m not in the meeting rooms, I don’t know any more than you — and even if I did, would you, as a fan of the team, want the team’s plans tipped off?

Enough of the (re-)introduction. I hate writing about myself. I’d rather write about football. Let’s get to the Combine.

DenverBroncos.com at the NFL Scouting Combine

February 20th, 2013 - 2:33pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

The NFL Scouting Combine is a busy time for every NFL franchise, as coaching staffs, scouts, trainers and football operations staff members head to Indianapolis for the annual event.

It’s no different for the Broncos, and DenverBroncos.com will be there to cover every aspect of the pre-draft function.

Look for coverage all week long, including interviews with Head Coach John Fox and Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway, videos of some of the top prospects that step to the podium, live blogs every day and top stories recapping the news of the day.

Broncos TV’s Chris Hall and DenverBroncos.com Editor Gray Caldwell will also check in with BTV On Site video segments discussing each day’s events.

In addition, a new — yet familiar — voice will be added to DenverBroncos.com starting with this year’s combine.

Andrew Mason will add to the site as a contributing writer. Mason has previously written for the Broncos’ and Panthers’ team sites in addition to various other publications including The Sporting News and The New York Times. This year marks his 10th NFL Scouting Combine.

Look for Mason’s first article tomorrow.

Caldwell, Hall, Mason and DenverBroncos.com’s Stuart Zaas will post multiple items every day, so check back for new content throughout the combine.

Inside the Combine with Xanders

March 1st, 2012 - 2:33pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

From the Broncos’ suite at Lucas Oil Stadium, General Manager Brian Xanders sat down with DenverBroncos.com to discuss the 2012 NFL Combine last Sunday.

He touched on a variety of subjects, including the familiarity that he, Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway and Head Coach John Fox have with each other now.

Xanders called the group’s second combine together “pretty similar,” with the exception that this year there’s more stability in the coaching staff.

“Last year the coaches were all newly hired,” Xanders said. “Then we had quick evaluations for free agency for three weeks, then we left for the combine. This year we had more time.”

Even new Defensive Coordinator Jack Del Rio had nearly a month after being hired to evaluate last season’s games so he had a solid grasp on the Broncos before heading to the combine.

In addition, the front office had meetings in December to talk about prospects’ character, and the coaching staff got involved for February meetings. Xanders said those meetings, just before the combine, serve as a “base of knowledge” for the coaches.

2012 NFL Scouting Combine: Day Four

February 26th, 2012 - 7:55am by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

It’s day four at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, which is the last day of media availability. Defensive backs are scheduled to talk to the press throughout the day, along with some players from other positions that didn’t have a chance to go on their assigned days.

Earlier this morning Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III ran his 40-yard dash. His 4.41 and 4.38 unofficial times represent one of the fastest times by a quarterback since the numbers were recorded starting in 2000.

While we wait for the first players to get to the podium, here is some audio and video from yesterday’s sessions.

2012 NFL Scouting Combine: Day Three

February 25th, 2012 - 8:06am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

It’s day three of the 2012 NFL Scouting Combine here at Lucas Oil Stadium, and it’s going to be another busy one.

Defensive linemen and linebackers are scheduled to step to the podiums today, including a number of players that “experts” predict could head to the Broncos in this April’s draft.

I’m going to try to soak in some of the sights and sounds of the combine outside of this media room today, so at times you’ll be hearing plenty from Stuart Zaas.

As usual, leave us any questions you might have in the comments section.
