Elway, Russell Talk Heckert, Rookies, Clady in Fan Forum

May 7th, 2013 - 2:24pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

I just finished up moderating a fan forum with Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway and Director of Player Personnel Matt Russell.

Season-ticket holders were able to ask them questions during the hour-long conference call, and it was a pretty fun experience for everyone involved. We’ve held a few fan forums in the past and we’ll hold more going forward this season.

Some of the more interesting notes to come out of the call were Elway’s thoughts on the addition of new Director of Pro Personnel Tom Heckert, Russell’s comments on Ryan Clady and Elway comparing Montee Ball to Terrell Davis.

Below are some quick hits from the fan forum. We’ll have more from the call over the next few days.

Elway on Heckert:

“Well, we’re thrilled to have Tom. He’s a guy that, as you said, he has 20 years of experience in the NFL. He’s got general manager experience, and he really started on the pro (personnel) side. So for him to come in and be our director of pro personnel, he’s going to add a great deal of knowledge on the pro side, as well as player evaluation. So we’re thrilled to have Tom. We think he’s a great addition, and we’re glad he’s with us.”

Russell on the atmosphere in the team’s draft war room:

“We’re prepared. We’ve done our work. We don’t really stress out about our picks; we just go with our board, and like I said, the work’s been done with our area scouts, and we have a great scouting staff, so we go with our board, we look up at the board, and it’s pretty laid-back prior to our pick, and then maybe three or four picks before us, we start to get intense, maybe that’s making trade calls or getting calls from other teams, but we lay back and we try to compose ourselves. We kind of know who we’re going to take when the time comes to pick.”

Broncos Trade Fourth-Round Selection

April 27th, 2013 - 10:32am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

The Broncos entered the 2013 NFL Draft without a sixth-rounder.

On Saturday, they changed that by trading the 125th overall selection in the draft to the Green Bay Packers for the 146th (5th round) and 173rd (6th round) picks.

The Packers selected UCLA running back Johnathan Franklin at 125.

Denver now has four picks remaining in the draft:

Fifth round, 13th pick, 146 overall
Fifth round, 28th pick, 161 overall
Sixth round, 5th pick, 173 overall
Seventh round, 28th pick, 234 overall

A Good Draft is Critical in NFL

April 25th, 2013 - 6:08am by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

The draft is now upon us, from pre-draft through the three days of player selection.

The 78th National Football League draft is again taking place at the Radio City Music Hall in New York City, covered live by the NFL Network and by ESPN, more thoroughly than I ever imagined when I attended my very first draft as a reporter in 1973.

This time of year always kick starts memories of my first draft, which I actually did not work as the Broncos’ public relations director but as a young reporter for KBTR newsradio that year.

This was before the Federal Communications Commission ruled that there could not be radio-TV combined ownership in a single market, and each of the three major television stations in Denver had a major radio station as well.

What is now KUSA was KBTV-KBTR, and the radio side was a true big time news operation, with today’s equal, for comparison purposes, only existing in New York, LA, Philadelphia, and Chicago.

Elway on RBs: ‘We’ll See What Happens in the Draft’

April 23rd, 2013 - 1:04pm by Andrew MasonOther posts by

When Knowshon Moreno reeled off back-to-back 100-yard games against the Raiders and Ravens last December, it seemed that Willis McGahee, a Pro Bowler just a year earlier, had become a forgotten man among observers while he recovered from a knee injury suffered in a Week 11 win over San Diego.

But in the Broncos’ offices, McGahee was very much in their plans. Had Denver defeated Baltimore in the divisional round, McGahee would have been eligible to come off of injured reserve the following week, having received the one designated-to-return exemption teams were allowed last year. And even though Moreno answered questions about his durability and consistency in his six-game starting stint, he hobbled off the field in the playoff loss with an knee injury.

McGahee never had the chance to return, but as the Broncos look at their pre-draft roster, the 31-year-old running back has a prominent place.

“Well, with where we are right now, with (Willis) McGahee, he is that big back for us right now,” Elway said. “But, I think that if you look at what we have with Ronnie Hillman, he is that 190-pounder, that change-of-pace-type guy.”

Broncos Have Unique Presence in College Football Hall of Fame

April 21st, 2013 - 7:02am by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

In my last blog, when I was talking about our first radio color man, Jerry Groom, I mentioned that Groom is in the College Football Hall of Fame.

I am a member of the board of Directors of the Colorado Chapter of the College Football Hall of Fame (CFHoF), and it is a great organization. The annual banquet is in New York at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, and it really is a who’s who of college coaches and athletic directors, then and now.

My own mention of Groom got me to thinking.

The Denver Broncos have great representation in the CFHoF, and I thought some of you might be interested in seeing the complete list, with a comment or two here and there.

Alphabetically, inductees in the College Football Hall Of Fame with a connection to the Denver Broncos are as follows:

Six Degrees of Draft Speraration

April 19th, 2013 - 10:14am by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

Are you familiar with the term, “six degrees of separation?”

It was popularized in a Will Smith movie many years ago, and the basis of the concept is something like, you know your grandfather, your grandfather knew someone else, hence an attachment. If you go six degrees into this game, you get some astonishing results.

I have a silly, crazy one regarding the Broncos, and I readily admit at the outset that this is not the most intense, serious blog ever, but some of you might finds it fun and interesting. And I can pretty much guarantee there are a couple of facts you did not know.

A person just has to have a mind open enough to be able to take it all in—however, one of the problems if your mind is too open is that a lot of stuff falls out! But here we go.

Gradishar to Announce Second-Day Draft Picks

April 18th, 2013 - 9:58am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

In 2011, Shannon Sharpe did it. In 2012, it was Terrell Davis.

Now, for the 2013 NFL Draft, it’s Randy Gradishar’s turn.

On Friday, April 26, Gradishar will announce the Broncos’ second- and third-round picks live from Radio City Music Hall. The Broncos Ring of Famer was selected as one of 32 “NFL Greats” to participate in the draft — continuing the program that began in 2011.

This year’s class of 32 players includes six Pro Football Hall of Famers, and many argue that Gradishar should be in Canton sooner rather than later.

Here are just a handful of notes on one of the key pieces of the Orange Crush defense, compiled by Erich Schubert:

In 145 career regular-season contests (134 starts) over 10 seasons, Gradishar totaled 2,049 tackles—an average of 205 tackles per season—and set a franchise record by leading the club in that category for nine consecutive years (1975-83). He also accounted for 33 turnovers (20 INTs, 13 FR) during his career to tie for the fourth most by an NFL linebacker during that span.

In addition to his seven Pro Bowl selections, Gradishar is the only Bronco to be named NFL Defensive Player of the Year, earning the honor in 1978 after accumulating 286 tackles (190 solo), four interceptions and two fumble recoveries. He helped the franchise make its first four playoff appearances (1977-79, ’83) while leading Denver to consecutive division titles (1977-78) and an appearance in Super Bowl XII during the 1977 season.

Currently a Senior Committee candidate for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Gradishar was a finalist for the Hall of Fame in 2003 and ’08 and a semifinalist from 2005-07. During his 10-year career, his seven Pro Bowls were surpassed only by Hall of Fame linebacker Jack Lambert.

Additionally, his 145 consecutive regular-season games played from 1974-83 were matched only by Hall of Fame linebacker Ted Hendricks.

Kiper Sees Hayden as Denver’s No. 1 Pick

April 13th, 2013 - 7:36am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

In his latest conference call covering a variety of topics on the 2013 NFL Draft, ESPN analyst Mel Kiper, Jr. specifically discussed how he sees the Broncos’ draft unfolding.

Kiper currently has Houston cornerback D.J. Hayden, headed to Denver in the first round.

Below is his full answer on why he sees Hayden, who underwent emergency heart surgery in November, as a logical pick for the Broncos. He also touches on why Texas A&M defensive end Damontre Moore could fit in Denver and whether the team could take a running back in later rounds.
