The “D’s” back in Defense

November 28th, 2009 - 8:28am by mark_cooperOther posts by mark_cooper

Great Game!!! Love beating the Giants!!! I still have a grudge that dates back to SB XXI.

Nice to see the team back in form. Yea, it took a few weeks but the “D” is back and RUNNING GAME was on track. Funny how we all talked about getting the running game on track the last few weeks and how it would help the offense.

Yea, yea, some will be saying we got to the red zone a few times and came away with three but it was enough this week. Like you, or many of you, I say, run the ball all way in. We’d get down close to the end zone and go to a four-wide set and I think that is a disadvantage … takes away the draw play and the defense knows Kyle’s not going to run a QB draw with his injury so the defensive lineman pin their ears back and only have ONE thing to worry about (the pass rush) and/or we see a blitz with it. I know I sound like a EX offensive lineman, (I’m allowed) when I say run it but I have to say, “when it ain’t broke (between the 30s) don’t try to fix it.” The linemen get in a groove and rhythm.

Committed to Communication

November 25th, 2009 - 3:30pm by Chris GentilvisoOther posts by Chris Gentilviso

Determined to return to their winning ways, the Broncos locker room recently took an off-the-field step in that direction.

Earlier this week, the team held a players-only meeting to discuss matters on their minds. The result of that get-together was greater clarity among everyone on the roster.

“Anytime you discuss things amongst each other, at least you get honest views,” Champ Bailey said. “Just talking to some of the guys, just yesterday and today, you kind of get a feel where everybody’s head is, because I think the most important thing is we need everybody on the same page. It is always good to talk to your teammates.”

Stopping the One-Two Punch

November 24th, 2009 - 4:31pm by Chris GentilvisoOther posts by Chris Gentilviso

With the beating running backs take on a weekly basis, having a one-two punch in the backfield serves as a great benefit.

Entering Week 12, the New York Giants are one of only two NFL teams to have a pair of top-20 rushers. Brandon Jacobs ranks 13th in the league with 656 rushing yards, while Ahmad Bradshaw sits in 20th place with 549 yards on the ground.

In turn, stopping that Giants tandem ranks near the top of the Broncos’ defensive priority list.

“They’re an explosive team — how they lost four in a row, I have no idea,” Mario Haggan said. “But seeing how Brandon Jacobs runs the ball, they have a change-up back with Ahmad Bradshaw, you’ve got Eli (Manning) back there — they’re definitely a good team.”

Mile High Thanksgiving History

November 24th, 2009 - 10:37am by jim_saccomanoOther posts by jim_saccomano

This is the third time in Denver Broncos history that the team has hosted a Thanksgiving Day game.

It first happened in 1962 when Denver entertained the New York Titans, forerunners of the Jets, in one of the greatest scoring matchups in pro football history, with the Titans eventually taking a 46-45 win over the hosts before a crowd of just over 15,000.

The next year AFL schedule makers had the Broncos hosting the Oakland Raiders, and the Raiders won that won by a 26-10 margin.

When you open the pages of history it is always fascinating what you find.

The “official” play by play for both games shows, in each instance, “Denver in red.”

A Couple of Super Bowl Thoughts, and Predictions …

February 3rd, 2008 - 1:29pm by AndrewOther posts by Andrew

It’s Super Sunday.

T-minus three hours or so to kickoff.

And, I’ll be honest, I’m not watching the pregame show.

It’s testament to the prominence of the sport that Fox can justify four and a half hours of pregame content, which doesn’t even factor what airs on ESPN and NFL Network throughout the day. But by this time, I’ve heard virtually everything there is to hear about this game. I need to step away.

I mentioned this to my mother, who is back home on the couch with my father, watching college basketball. By backtracking through our Super Sundays as a family, we realized that more often than not, we’d built up to the big game with other games, rather than chatter.

Besides, I’ve wasted so much time stewing over this game and my prediction for it that I’ve ensured a long post-game night of catching up with tasks and obligations that await here at my desk.

Conference Championships — A Few Thoughts

January 20th, 2008 - 11:34pm by AndrewOther posts by Andrew

And so we are given a rematch of a game that was so significant it aired on three networks – and ironically, said rematch will air on the one over-the-air broadcast partner frozen out of that televised trifecta of Dec. 29. If Fox wants to share the air, maybe the Dumont network could be revived for such a purpose.

NEW ENGLAND 21, SAN DIEGO 12

Perhaps it’s appropriate that the Patriots sealed their fourth Super Bowl trip of the decade and sixth in the last 22 years with a final score that was a palindrome. After all, any way one disseminates the unbeaten New England side – forwards, backwards, sideways, upside down – the conclusion is the same, one of greatness that until this year seemed unattainable.

But this game might have been their most unsightly to date, punctuated by three Tom Brady interceptions that all-but gift-wrapped the game to the visiting Chargers, who proceeded to return the gift by marching to four Nate Kaeding field goals and nothing more.
