P.M. Blog: Day 10

August 4th, 2008 - 6:02pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

Monday closed out with a quick practice under a nice cloud cover that made things pretty comfortable. There wasn’t much sweat to be had as players jogged through their respective plays — the one-tough-practice-a-day philosophy has veterans and rookies alike praising Head Coach Mike Shanahan’s forethought, as the players think it’s saving them tons of energy for when game time comes along.

As always, here are some quick hits.

ATTENDANCE REPORT: The usual suspects watched the jog-through practice from the sidelines — veterans such as Ebenezer Ekuban, Darrell Jackson and Brandon Stokley…The out of pads list remained the same as this morning, with the addition of Peyton Hillis, who didn’t dress out for the afternoon practice…Montrae Holland dressed out for the jog-through.

Young, Webster, Shanahan Nominated for Awards

November 13th, 2007 - 11:04am by AndrewOther posts by

You win, you get nominated for awards … four of ‘em, to be precise, but one player is nominated twice.

That player is running back Selvin Young, whose 109-yard, one-touchdown performance made him the nominee for both the Diet Pepsi Rookie of the Week and the FedEx Ground Player of the Week. Young, who made his second career start in the place of the injured Travis Henry, scored from 20 yards out early in the third quarter to give the Broncos the lead for good. It was the first touchdown of his NFL career.

Strongside linebacker Nate Webster was nominated for GMC Defensive Player of the Week after scoring the Broncos’ second touchdown in a nine-second span of the third-quarter Sunday. His 17-yard return of a Damon Huard fumble that was forced by Elvis Dumervil’s sack pushed the Broncos out in front by two scores, where they would remain for the rest of the afternoon. Webster also logged five solo tackles — not bad for a game in which he did not start as the Broncos opened in a nickel package.

Finally, Head Coach Mike Shanahan is one of the finalists for Motorola Coach of the Week, after an overall team effort that witnessed four takeaways, four sacks and 327 total yards of offense. The win was also the Broncos’ first at Arrowhead Stadium since 2002, and the 16-point margin was the team’s third-largest there in 35 overall games at the facility.

Training Camp Day 1: Afternoon Session

Here’s where you really start to learn about players — when the shoulder pads go on. The Broncos didn’t put on the full pads, practicing in shorts, but placing the shoulder pads under their jerseys altered the tempo and tenor of the day’s second practice.

“The first day in pads, it takes a while (to get accustomed),” Head Coach Mike Shanahan said after the hour-and-a-half session.

“It’s not natural. You haven’t worked with pads for a while, and it’s going to take a number of days before we feel comfortable, “That’s why you come back here and have training camp — to get in football shape.”

“Pads do make a difference — big time,” said Kenard Lang, who ran with the second team Sunday afternoon after working on the second and third units in the morning session. “When you don’t have pads, you can’t be as physical as you like because you don’t want to hurt (the player you hit).”

NOTES FROM THE AFTERNOON:

ATTENDANCE REPORT: Quite a few veterans are on the one-practice-per-day schedule, a group that Sunday included Brandon Stokley, Matt Lepsis, Tom Nalen and Sam Adams. Ebenezer Ekuban was in uniform but didn’t see the field during the team work, which consumed the majority of the afternoon session. Fifteen-year veteran John Lynch took part in both of the day’s practices.

Wilson Back to Work

December 6th, 2006 - 2:58pm by AndrewOther posts by

Perhaps the best news of the afternoon at Dove Valley came when Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced that the tingling in Al Wilson’s shoulders has disappeared, allowing the All-Pro linebacker to return to practice less than four days after he was immobilized, strapped to a backboard and removed from INVESCO Field via cart.

“He will be able to practice today,” Shanahan said. “Ten we’ll just kind of play things by ear. We’ll see how he feels, see if there are any setbacks, and we’ll just approach it day by day.”

Added Larry Coyer: “He’s fine; he’s good. Those things are up to the doctor, but he’s in good shape, thank God for that.”

If Wilson cannot play, Nate Webster would likely step in at middle linebacker — a situation about which Coyer possesses no trepidations.

“I have no fear,” Coyer said. “I don’t worry about that.

“Nate will do his job; Al will do his job, that’s the way it goes, but in the real world, that’s the way it’s going to be, because they’re not going to change the game time, they’re not going to postpone it. That’s football.”

Coyer added that linebackers coach Kirk Doll has been working extra with Webster on a daily basis to get the first-year Bronco and seven-year NFL veteran adapted to the system.
