Season’s Not Over; Don’t Throw In the Towel

October 9th, 2007 - 9:00pm by mark_cooperOther posts by

Well…a lot like you guys, I had to digest that one a little bit and ponder on it for a day or so before this blog. I remember a few of those days (GAMES) going all the way back to high school. So I re-lived a few of those in my mind to try to explain it in a way that makes some sense.

You may have days like that and believe it or not they aren’t uncommon. Have you ever showed up at work and said to yourself, “I should have stayed in bed?”… or have you had days where you said to yourself, “Wow, today’s not my day!” … or just had a day and felt you weren’t at your best …

… The answer is, “Yes.”

Well believe it or not, it can happen to a team and you saw it in living color. No matter how hard you try, things just don’t turn around, go your way, or get going at all. It happens; I’ve been there and no matter who yells about it, who comments on it … nothing changes. Ater it’s over you don’t really have an explanation for it and you’re kind of in a fog.

I had to laugh – even Mike Shanahan said he didn’t blame the fans for leaving. He’s right. You all pay good money for entertainment and if it’s not happening, you either turn the channel on the TV set or you leave the game. I can’t blame you and won’t.

As I Watch ‘Ed Wood’ Again … Questions and Answers

October 2nd, 2007 - 11:47pm by AndrewOther posts by

Solving my Saturday escapades may not have required turning to outer space for a ninth plan, but they certainly showed that my mind can be a tad spacey sometimes, and I’d like to think that one of the worst directors of all time would have appreciated that. So let’s start pulling the strings …

When I have a little time on my hands — or when the timeliness of a reply is crucial for adding something to the myriad discussions on this blog — I like to respond to comments in the comments section and wade into the conversation. I did a few times yesterday, and nearly did so again last night after reading one comment that suggested banning a certain vociferous supporter of a former Broncos quarterback, a poster whose name many of us have come to know.

The comment that struck me was this one, which suggested banning the poster, using as his argument a phrase that has become a political and cultural flashpoint in recent years:

“If you’re not with us, you’re against us.”

A permutation of this phrase was uttered by President George W. Bush on Sept. 20, 2001, and his use of it has often been cited by observers on various positions on the political spectrum. (Its use is not limited to the right side of the aisle; Sen. Hillary Clinton also spoke in such terms.) Truth of the matter is, the phrase is a hoary one, as old as the Bible itself.

Tuesday Questions and Answers: Because I Love a Good Argument …

September 25th, 2007 - 4:24pm by AndrewOther posts by

Every Wednesday when Parliament is in session in London — and at other times in some other nations of the Commonwealth — noontime begins the Prime Minister’s Questions, when members of the House of Commons can query the nation’s leader about all matters, from the ones that are global in scope to more trivial and local concerns like signage along the M1.

Since Tuesday is the players’ day off here … and since this usually brings some time for me to answer questions … I’m going to bring that tradition over here to the blog. While I’ll answer as much as I can throughout the week in the comments section or on the pregame podcast — available Saturdays on DenverBroncos.com — whatever I can’t get to there, I’ll take here.

So keep your comments rolling on the blog posts, or e-mail me, as we begin another Tuesday question-and-answer session … which I will begin with the return of an old antagonist to our blog sanctum. I’m talking, of course, about LetPlummerPlay:

And since compelling drama requires antagonism … and since I love a good written scrum … I’m only too happy to dive in and respond to this individual:

Wow, it’s been a while since I stopped by old Andrew’s blog. After being reprimanded more than once by Mr. Mason, I just stuck to our infamous letplummerplay.com website.

Three words:

Let.

It.

Go.

Questions, Answers, Tight Ends, Rookies, Soccer … and Fox

September 18th, 2007 - 5:39pm by AndrewOther posts by

Bienvenidos from the basement-office bureau of DenverBroncos.com, where I find myself decamped in order to meet a deadline on a game-program feature for the Chargers game, compose my as-promised response to numerous blog comments and write another blog entry about this morning’s heavily-attended kickoff event at the Broncos Boys and Girls Club.

Which brings me to one of the stars of the morning, Domonique Foxworth, and his little blog-based salvo …

As for my Blog Master, it’s not no stinkin’ Andrew Mason. I’m in direct competition with Andrew Mason. My blog is consistently better than his blog. I get more attention and I give more quality insight, so I wouldn’t dare let Andrew Mason be the one who transcribes my blog.

Oh, Foxie, Foxie, Foxie (or is it “Foxy,” perhaps?) … where do I begin …

Better? Well, you have your moments, my friend. Your work is decent, but it would be nice if you actually wrote the thing instead of dictating it.

Having someone else transcribe … that’s poseur blogging. I know you’re better than that. I know you’ve got it in you. If Jack Nasty can write his stuff, so can you. No hiding behind a “Blog Master” over here, my friend; this blog here is all me … right down to the occasional late-night ramblings from the comfort of home.

But in general, I’ll give you a free pass on that one, Foxie. I’ve heard many worse insults tossed my way.

Seriously, I enjoy the blog. It’s a different perspective, one we haven’t seen too often in recent NFL annals.

Training Camp Begins

July 31st, 2007 - 1:20pm by domonique_foxworthOther posts by

Where do we start?

I want to address my friend TerpsFan. First of all, go Terps. Just wondering what class we had together back in the day. Tell me a little about yourself.

I guess we can get right down to what people really care about: the start of camp. It’s camp. Everybody has things in their job that are not quite their favorite. This is the toughest time of the year for coaches and players, and our day starts at about 7:30. That’s what time I get up.

I normally go to bed around 10, get home around 9:30, so it’s a pretty long day we spend over here. It’s not always a lot of fun, but the great thing is you get to spend a lot of time with your teammates. It’s when you start to build that team bond.

Kids Camps, More Writing and a Trip to the Mountains…

June 19th, 2007 - 10:30am by domonique_foxworthOther posts by

Went back to the DC/Virginia/Maryland area this past weekend for Curome Cox — my college teammate and current teammate. He had his first annual free camp for the Curome Cox Foundation. There were about 350 kids there — it was amazing. Had a lot of big sponsors. Some other players went out there. Brian Clark came out. Madieu Williams from the Bengals, another college teammate of ours, was there. Demetrin Veal and Elvis Dumervil were there and a couple of other players.

We had a really good time with the camp and we spoke to the kids at the end about the general things that you speak to kids about — teamwork, dedication, hard work, school and all these things and how you need to have priorities and football is not always the number one priority at that age.

OTA Day 11: Notes and Photos

June 1st, 2007 - 4:02pm by AndrewOther posts by

OTA Day 11
The last two days, Tony Scheffler has been able to catch some of the action on the field, however, as you can see, his recovery from foot surgery is only beginning. The target for Scheffler’s return remains training camp.

Other injuries have dotted the Broncos throughout OTAs, particularly at wide receiver, where an already slim receiving corps that was without Brandon Stokley and Rod Smith lost Glenn Martinez on the first day of OTAs and Brandon Marshall earlier this week with hamstring and groin injuries, respectively.

Head Coach Mike Shanahan said Marshall’s injury is “not very serious.”

More notes from Friday …

… Quincy Morgan had the most acrobatic catch of the day. With tight coverage from Eric Hill blanketing him, Morgan tipped Patrick Ramsey’s pass about 10 feet in the air and reached up to grab it …

… Tip drills were the main course of the day. Dré Bly tipped a pass into John Lynch’s grasp during seven-on-seven drills, while later Domonique Foxworth took an interception “to the house” after a Patrick Ramsey pass skipped off Nate Jackson’s hands and into those of the third-year cornerback …

… And since OTAs are about mixing and matching players from various lines of the depth chart, this is the time for the Darrell Hackney-to-Javon Walker connection; it worked brilliantly for a deep connection midway through practice …

… Former Wisconsin safety Roderick Rogers showed some closing speed in his work with the cornerbacks, knocking away a deep pass for David Kircus during one-on-one work …

… And now, some pictures:

That’s all for today. OTAs resume on Tuesday; the players will hit the links Monday for Shanahan’s annual golf tournament.

And if you’re going to Fan Fair, I’ll be over on the East Club level between 1 and 3 p.m., willingly matching trivia wits. Stop by and say hello, or heckle … do what you will, just keep it clean.

OTA Day 5: Notes and Photos

May 22nd, 2007 - 12:07pm by AndrewOther posts by

OTA Day 5

Guten tag and hello from Dove Valley, where cooler temperatures — 56 degrees as the session began, to be exact — greeted the Broncos as they took the field for the fifth of their 14 organized team activities. Storms have since arrived at team headquarters, and thunder and lightning is crackling through the skies as I type.

Addendum: The practice was truncated by a half-hour as a severe thunderstorm slammed Dove Valley with lightning, thunder and hail.

Notes:

… There’s not too much to note from the 10 minutes of pre-practice warmups. Dre’ Bly returned for a full day of work; wide receiver Glenn Martinez was out of uniform; no one got called in front of the team to do a pre-stretching dance. It was a very quiet start to the on-field work …

… Things haven’t been so quiet at the league’s May owners meetings, currently ongoing in Nashville, Tenn. The venue for Super Bowl XLVI will be announced today, but the league has already released a medical panel’s recommendations to the league on dealing with player concussions and head injuries, the findings of which were presented to owners at the meeting.

OTA Day 4: Afternoon Wrap

OTA Day 4

More photos, more notes, more everything …

… With Tony Scheffler out two months after breaking a bone in his left foot, the tenor of the competition for playing time at tight end changed — and perhaps no player at the position saw his work altered more than Nate Jackson, who enters his third set of OTAs there after beginning his career as a wide receiver.

“Today, I was on the first field, whereas last week I was on the second field,” Jackson said. “So I’ve got to step up and do the things Tony was doing, and not miss a beat and make plays.

“When (Scheffler) comes back, it’ll be back to normal. But I know my role — and I’ll catch some balls and do whatever I’ve got to do.”

Added Stephen Alexander, the senior member of the tight end corps: “I’m sure there’s enough room for all of us, so we’ll just have to wait and see.”

The tight end scrum will be the focus of the final piece of the day over on the main site, which I’ll post later this evening …

Season Review: Nate Jackson

March 4th, 2007 - 10:42pm by AndrewOther posts by

Nate JacksonWhat more can be said about Nate Jackson that he hasn’t already written about himself?

Yes, that’s a cop-out of an opening to this blog entry. So if you want to read his first-person thoughts on the experience of playing for the Broncos this year, click here.

On the field, Jackson saw dividends from his conversion to tight end for the first time after hamstring problems wrecked his 2005 campaign; he played in each of the season’s final nine games after making his 2006 debut against Cleveland on Oct. 22.

Three of Jackson’s five receptions this year came at Oakland — including a 24-yard snag that set up Kyle Johnson’s game-winning touchdown.

Proving he can provide more receptions — especially since Jay Cutler showed a proclivity for locating tight ends during his five games as starter — could be key for Jackson to extending his Broncos tenure into a fifth season.

FINAL ANALYSIS: Now has 13 catches for 122 yards in his career … Is the longest-tenured tight end on the Broncos’ roster, although his first two seasons with the club came at wide receiver — one of which saw him on the practice squad for almost an entire campaign (2003).

NEXT: Fullback Kyle Johnson.
