Full Participation for Entire Roster

On Wednesday, the entire 53-man roster participated in practice.

Today, the news got even better for the Broncos, as every player on the roster was listed with full participation in Thursday’s session.

That includes guard Chris Kuper and linebacker Nate Irving, who were both limited on Wednesday.

It marks Kuper’s first full practice since fracturing his forearm in training camp on Aug. 14. Thursday was Irving’s first full practice since suffering a concussion in Week 3 against the Houston Texans.

Fox said Kuper’s status for Sunday’s game in New England is still up in the air, but if he were able to play, “it would be great.”

“He’s been through a lot with the ankle in the offseason and forearm in the preseason,” Fox said of the team captain. “At the end of the day, he’d much rather be out here than in the training room, so I’m sure he’s excited about it.”

Broncos Prepared for Potential Mays Absence

On Sunday, the Broncos could be without an anchor in the middle of the defense.

Middle linebacker Joe Mays was dealt a one-game suspension by the NFL for his hit on Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub during the team’s Week 3 loss.

“Joe’s one of the best human beings I know, and there’s no way he would maliciously go after a quarterback like that or hit him in the head on purpose,” defensive tackle Justin Bannan said. “You guys have got to realize how fast these things happen.”

Head Coach John Fox acknowledged on Wednesday that Mays will appeal the decision, but currently the linebacker is not allowed inside the team’s facility.

If Mays’ suspension is upheld, Denver will face a potent Raiders offense — highlighted by running back Darren McFadden, who has averaged 6.3 yards per carry in his career against the Broncos — without its starting Mike linebacker.

But Raiders Head Coach Dennis Allen recognized that the Broncos will be prepared regardless of who lines up on Sunday.

Tackling Top Priority

Even when teams put on pads for a training camp practice, coaches don’t want to see players hit the ground.

There’s a fine line between building toughness and putting players at a higher risk for injuries.
In order to work on tackling, Defensive Coordinator Jack Del Rio wanted to get as close to that line as possible without taking players to the turf.

“You can’t play good defense if you don’t tackle, so that will be an emphasis point, and we do drill it, almost going live,” Del Rio said. “I actually contemplated it; half the staff thought I was crazy, so we left it out, but you have to be able to tackle. You have to work at it to be good at it, and I think we’ve made strides there.”
