Gifford a Great and a Favorite

November 16th, 2009 - 2:18pm by jim_saccomanoOther posts by jim_saccomano

The other night I was catching up on some TiVo and watched a Centerstage production on the YES Network, this one with host Michael Kay interviewing Frank Gifford.

You might wonder in advance what Frank Gifford has to do with the Denver Broncos, and save for his many appearances doing Monday Night Football games in which the Broncos were participants, nothing at all is the correct answer.

But if you are in pro football, or a fan of pro football, then we are all part of the fabric of the same culture, all of us cut from the same cloth of interest in and appreciation for the game and its greats.

Frank Gifford is a guy whom I only saw play on black and white television back in the days of my youth, but then many years later I came to know him through his work on Monday Night Football.

And he is one of my favorite guys.

Broncos at Chargers: Pregame Blog

October 19th, 2009 - 4:46pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by Gray Caldwell

Sunny day here in San Diego, and we’re packed into the press box at Qualcomm Stadium. It’s an open-air press box, so it’s always fun to be able to soak in the full atmosphere of the game.

Like the Broncos, the Chargers have painted the field with an old-school feel, as well — the end zones are blue with white diamonds outlined in yellow, and the AFL’s 50th anniversary logo is painted at midfield.

Players are on the field warming up, and there have already been sightings of the brown-and-white striped socks along with the brown and gold pants. Clearly we’re in for an interesting uniform combination yet again.

Motivated for Monday Night

October 17th, 2009 - 11:02am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by Gray Caldwell

At 5-0, the Broncos head into their second AFC West road game as underdogs. When they visit the San Diego Chargers on Monday Night Football, there will certainly be plenty to feel motivated about as the team strives for a 6-0 record heading into the bye week.

“It is going to be a 60-minute game, and it’s on Monday night,” Kyle Orton said. “I don’t think we will have any issue being emotionally ready to play this game.”

The Broncos know the Chargers will be ready as well. At 2-2, quarterback Philip Rivers admitted the team isn’t where it hoped it would be at this point in the season. In a hostile atmosphere against a team playing like it’s desperate for a win, it could be a tough battle all night.

For that reason, Head Coach Josh McDaniels said the team is looking to start fast on Monday.

Turnovers & Penalties, No Win

October 21st, 2008 - 6:14pm by mark_cooperOther posts by mark_cooper

Short post today. This is one of those games you just put behind you. Penalties and turnovers are a no win situation and until you can stop them — you have no shot at winning.

Great D the first half then boom — 200-plus yards rushing against you — your doomed. It was a long day, and one we can just shelve and move past.

We’ve seen it happen this year to the Colts, the Cowboys, the Giants and many others. The Titans are the only team that looks hot right now and that can change with injuries. I was glad to see Royal back before the bye week, now we can get back on track and put the turnovers behind us.

Ever have one of those days where things just don’t click? At the end of the day you say, “I should have just stayed in bed. Yep that was Monday Night. I’ve already put it behind me!!!

Disappointing Season Wraps Up

December 26th, 2007 - 12:15pm by jim_saccomanoOther posts by jim_saccomano

Sometimes you just cannot sugarcoat your disappointment, and the 2007 National Football League is one of those situations for the Denver Broncos.

Our franchise is a proud one which has sustained long periods of great success, but this season is a low ebb.

Everywhere you go, you hear people comment about what a bad season it has been.

But that is just a reflection of how much people care, or how much a part of the Denver community the Broncos are. If fans did not care, THAT would really be disappointing.

Monday Night Football a Part of Americana

November 13th, 2007 - 3:35pm by jim_saccomanoOther posts by jim_saccomano

With the Denver Broncos set to host the Tennessee Titans in Denver’s second home Monday night game of the 2007 season, and the second of three overall appearances –the Broncos also will play a Monday night contest at San Diego on Christmas Eve – it brings back lots of memories about playing on the national stage.

But one of my deepest memories along these lines has to do with the Broncos’ very first appearance on Monday Night Football, then an ABC production that featured Howard Cosell when he was in his prime as a celebrity journalist.

Many would say more celebrity than journalist, and it is real hard to argue with that assessment.

Monday Night Football has been part of the landscape of American society for the better part of four decades, and fans today have to strain to remember how it was once upon a time.

Most fans cannot, in fact, because they were too young then.

Denver had the Broncos, but the nation didn’t care.

An Emotional Game, but a Great Win

October 23rd, 2007 - 12:31pm by domonique_foxworthOther posts by domonique_foxworth

Alright, time for another fun and exciting blog with everybody’s favorite Bronco, Domonique Foxworth.

Well, this is probably going to be the most fun blog that I’ve done in quite some time — at least four weeks — because we got a win. I played a large role in the game, which is always a good feeling, especially coming off a couple weeks missed by injuries and several losses in a row, which We as Broncos players and you as Broncos fans are not accustomed to. But it made the win feel that much better, I guess.

It’s something to be proud of, because the Pittsburgh Steelers are one of the top teams and are respected for being one of the toughest and most talented teams in the AFC. To be able to get a win against them and play well is great. We played probably as well as we have so far on special teams and played pretty well on defense. I think we did great on special teams, which is one of the most underrated things about football, how important field position is. That’s all decided through special teams. We had some great coverage in kickoffs this year for the first time this season. We also had some pretty good returns, and had an all-around solid special teams game.

On offense we were able to score touchdowns, which has been something that’s been difficult for us this year. We were able to score touchdowns, which are a lot better than field goals. We made some turnovers and even scored on defense this week, so I think we played just about as well as we’ve played, as far as a complete game is concerned, this year.
