Monday Night Football

September 13th, 2012 - 5:57pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

The Broncos opened the season in style under the lights of Sunday Night Football in Week 1.

Denver is the only show in town again in Week 2.

“I’ve been dreaming about this since I was 7,” rookie defensive end Derek Wolfe said.

This time, it’s Monday Night Football for Denver, on the road against the Atlanta Falcons.

“It’s always exciting, just like Christmas,” cornerback Tracy Porter said. “You know when Christmas is, so you’re still excited to get those gifts. Monday night doesn’t come around often, but when you get your opportunity, you have to enjoy it.”

It’s the first time in franchise history the Broncos have opened the season with primetime games in back-to-back weeks.

But the Broncos are used to playing under the lights — 2012 marks the 21st consecutive season that Denver has played on Monday Night Football, extending the longest active streak in the NFL. It’s the second-longest such streak all-time.

“Monday night is a privilege to get to do it,” tight end Jacob Tamme said. “It’s a cool thing to be able to play in that type of atmosphere. To be able to open up Sunday night (and then play) Monday night, it’s a pretty cool thing. It doesn’t really change anything as far as your preparation and all that type of stuff, but it is neat to have an opportunity to go play that night atmosphere again.”

Primetime or not, linebacker Joe Mays said the most important thing will be to execute, “try to go out there and get a win.”

But to do it on Monday in front of a national audience and all of their peers would showcase to the rest of the league what the Broncos hope to be about this season.

“This is Monday Night Football,” wide receiver Brandon Stokley said. “It doesn’t get much bigger than that.”

MNF Coin Toss to Feature Terrell Davis

September 9th, 2011 - 11:51am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

Broncos Ring of Famer Terrell Davis is set to participate in the season-opening coin toss on Monday as the Broncos take on the Oakland Raiders.

“For me its always an easy ‘yes’ when it involves coming back and being involved in anything that deals with Denver -– especially on a Raiders weekend,” Davis said with a laugh.

Broncos Have Place on MNF History

September 7th, 2011 - 4:25pm by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

The longest running team sports programming in American sport and/or television history is Monday Night Football.

The Broncos once earlier played the late game on MNF to open the season, a game at Oakland in 2008.

But for Broncos fans this will be the first time Denver ever has opened the season with the “late” Monday night game at home, kickoff slated for approximately 8:20 p.m. Mountain Time. That means East Coast football fans will be watching the great Broncos-Raiders rivalry starting at 10:20.

Mile High City fans now recognize Monday Night Football as a commonplace occurrence on the Broncos’ annual schedule—this is Denver’s 20th straight year on MNF, and that is the longest current streak in the National Football League.

New History Adds to Old History With Raiders

April 19th, 2011 - 5:00pm by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

The more things are new, the more they repeat themselves.

As everyone knows with the release of the 2011 National Football League schedule, the Broncos open the season with a Monday Night Football contest against the Oakland Raiders.

This will mark Denver’s 20th consecutive season to appear on Monday Night Football, extending the Broncos’ own longest active streak in the NFL. Pretty good for a team from the Rocky Mountain time zone that had to fight its way on the schedule for the first time in 1973, against, of course, the Raiders.

This will be the third time the Broncos will have opened with their very first game being a MNF engagement at home—the first was a victory over the Miami Dolphins in 1999, and the most recent was on the eve of 9/11 when the Broncos opened Invesco Field at Mile High by defeating the Giants.

Regarding the Raiders, this marks the sixth time in Denver Broncos history that our team’s first home game (not necessarily the first game of the season, but the first regular season game in Denver) will have featured the Raiders as opponents.

Broncos at Chargers: Second Half Blog

November 22nd, 2010 - 9:22pm by Gabe HiattOther posts by

Q3 15:00: Matt Prater’s kickoff is fielded to the 29-yard line by Darren Sproles before he’s taken down by Wesley Woodyard.

Q3 14:19: Sproles gets the carry on first down and he runs for 6 yards. Mike Tolbert runs for 8 yards and fumbles, but San Diego recovers. Sproles runs for 1 yard on the following first down. Perrish Cox breaks up a pass on second down, setting up third-and-9 for the Chargers. Rivers takes the shotgun snap and hits Darren Sproles over the middle with room to run. Sproles turns on the jets and finds blockers down the field, turning the short catch into a 57-yard touchdown catch.

CHARGERS 28, BRONCOS 7

*INJURY UPDATE* Darcel McBath left the game with a quadricep injury. His return is questionable.

Q3 12:36: Nate Kaeding kicks off to Demaryius Thomas, who finds a seam in the coverage and carries the ball just past the 40-yard line. But there are two flags on the play, a holding penalty on the Broncos and a tripping penalty on the Chargers. The penalties offset at the spot of the holding call, so the Broncos will start with a first-and-10 from their own 19-yard line.

It’s How You Play, Not Who You Play

April 21st, 2010 - 2:48pm by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

The long awaited 2010 National Football League schedule is out at last, making the coming season truly seem to be right around the corner.

As always, there is a great deal of speculation and analysis about tough schedules, easy schedules, etc., and that puts me in mind of a past moment in which I asked a coach to compare our schedule with that of a division opponent.

Gifford a Great and a Favorite

November 16th, 2009 - 2:18pm by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

The other night I was catching up on some TiVo and watched a Centerstage production on the YES Network, this one with host Michael Kay interviewing Frank Gifford.

You might wonder in advance what Frank Gifford has to do with the Denver Broncos, and save for his many appearances doing Monday Night Football games in which the Broncos were participants, nothing at all is the correct answer.

But if you are in pro football, or a fan of pro football, then we are all part of the fabric of the same culture, all of us cut from the same cloth of interest in and appreciation for the game and its greats.

Frank Gifford is a guy whom I only saw play on black and white television back in the days of my youth, but then many years later I came to know him through his work on Monday Night Football.

And he is one of my favorite guys.

Broncos at Chargers: Pregame Blog

October 19th, 2009 - 4:46pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

Sunny day here in San Diego, and we’re packed into the press box at Qualcomm Stadium. It’s an open-air press box, so it’s always fun to be able to soak in the full atmosphere of the game.

Like the Broncos, the Chargers have painted the field with an old-school feel, as well — the end zones are blue with white diamonds outlined in yellow, and the AFL’s 50th anniversary logo is painted at midfield.

Players are on the field warming up, and there have already been sightings of the brown-and-white striped socks along with the brown and gold pants. Clearly we’re in for an interesting uniform combination yet again.

Motivated for Monday Night

October 17th, 2009 - 11:02am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

At 5-0, the Broncos head into their second AFC West road game as underdogs. When they visit the San Diego Chargers on Monday Night Football, there will certainly be plenty to feel motivated about as the team strives for a 6-0 record heading into the bye week.

“It is going to be a 60-minute game, and it’s on Monday night,” Kyle Orton said. “I don’t think we will have any issue being emotionally ready to play this game.”

The Broncos know the Chargers will be ready as well. At 2-2, quarterback Philip Rivers admitted the team isn’t where it hoped it would be at this point in the season. In a hostile atmosphere against a team playing like it’s desperate for a win, it could be a tough battle all night.

For that reason, Head Coach Josh McDaniels said the team is looking to start fast on Monday.

Turnovers & Penalties, No Win

October 21st, 2008 - 6:14pm by mark_cooperOther posts by

Short post today. This is one of those games you just put behind you. Penalties and turnovers are a no win situation and until you can stop them — you have no shot at winning.

Great D the first half then boom — 200-plus yards rushing against you — your doomed. It was a long day, and one we can just shelve and move past.

We’ve seen it happen this year to the Colts, the Cowboys, the Giants and many others. The Titans are the only team that looks hot right now and that can change with injuries. I was glad to see Royal back before the bye week, now we can get back on track and put the turnovers behind us.

Ever have one of those days where things just don’t click? At the end of the day you say, “I should have just stayed in bed. Yep that was Monday Night. I’ve already put it behind me!!!
